now at 11:00, a powerful mudslide forces dozens of residents out of their homes and the heavy stuff hasn't even hit yet. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> good evening. i'm juliette goodrich in for sara tonight. we are going into a very wet weekend. the rain returned today, but there's an even more powerful storm system moving in now. this series of storms already ranking among the state's deadliest natural disasters and we aren't even close to the finish line. in fact, farmland in salinas valley submerged in brown water after the swollen salinas river breached levees. the soil is so

saturated from relentless rain a mudslide hit a north bay apartment complex. we'll have more on that later. also to the pacifica area, powerful waves went far beyond the beach spilling over into a promenade earlier today and the powerful surf slammed into the pier for the rest of the day. we are under a high surf warning. there are flood watches up and down the bay and people are bracing for whipping winds. tonight there are new evacuation warnings for people living in south santa clara county and that includes the watershed areas of the uvas reservoir and the pacheco pass river basin, areas around highway 101 and bolsa road in gilroy on alert, also. people in gilroy hope to avoid a repeat of this. on monday a stretch of 101 completely flooded blocking off the highway for hours. they literally swallowed up homes and cars.

when can we expect the storm to really ramp up? let's head to paul for all those answers and more. >> i think as the sun is coming up tomorrow is when some of the most intense rainfall will be occurring across the entire bay area. we've had a few showers this evening. first alert doppler, a lot of this stuff off the coast is moisture that's in the clouds but not quite reaching the ground. we've seen a few hit-or-miss showers mainly in the higher elevations of the santa cruz mountains, but the bulk of the moisture is still offshore. that will come charging towards us through the rest of tonight. we'll see the first showers moving onshore well before the sun comes up around 4 a.m., but the heaviest rain will fall as the sun comes up saturday, could be a couple rumbles of thunder embedded within this. that will push across the bay area. this is a more intense round of rain than today. it's going to last a little longer. that ramps up the flooding threat, but the back edge of this heaviest rain is going to be moving across the bay area by late morning. then we're into an off and on shower pattern in the afternoon before another batch of rain is going

to move in saturday evening not quite as intense. the little break in the action is good news for the 49ers game, upper 50s. there will be hit-or-miss showers and it will be breezy, but not the torrential rainfall. don't be surprised by some rumbles of thunder. the storm prediction center outlined the bay area for general thunderstorms which means we don't expect anything more intense than a few rumbles and some small hail and also a flood watch in effect through 4 a.m. tomorrow through 4 a.m. monday and also the potential for wind damage with the wind advisory going through noon tomorrow. we have all sorts of stuff to worry about. we'll look at the next wave of rain after that coming up in a few minutes. that's going on it move in sunday night into early monday, two more waves of heavy rain. >> some good warnings there. thank you. let's head up to marin county where 20 residents were forced out of their homes when a mudslide came crashing into their fairfax apartment complex. it's an area that has suffered quite a bit of damage

from the recent storms. andrea nakano caught up with one of the families that had their home red tagged because it's just too dangerous. >> reporter: this is an area known for beautiful trees and open space, but fairfax and san anselmo have been pounded by the rain. one family we talked with tonight feared that the weather would cause major damage to their home. this fairfax family was packing up what they could after their home was red tagged on friday. >> i'm still trying to grasp this is really happening. >> reporter: lovely wine and her four kid live right where the tree and debris slammed into their home. >> i got a call from my niece and she was terrified and screaming and said a tree had gone through the bathroom window. >> reporter: according to marin county fire, this mudslide displaced 19 people from the six units on the property along with seven dogs and four cats. two units are red tagged and the other four are yellow tagged, but all are

unsafe. >> we just wanted to stabilize the situation, get people out of harm's way and then insure that people don't return to a hazardous situation. >> reporter: lovely wine did return to grab the rest of they are her belongings that she managed to get out of her home. while the family has a hotel for the night, it's what happens next that scares her the most. >> this is one of the biggest fears i've ever had in my life. i was homeless aging out of foster care up until i was 27 to my first born and now i'm here homeless again with all four of my kids. >> reporter: wine and her family had lived at this location the last three years. she says it's the safest place she's ever lived and it's the perfect home for her children. while her future is in limbo, her first priority now is to stay strong for her children. >> i was just born with this natural resilience of having to be strong even when i'm weak and i just never really had a

choice. i'm just trying to stay positive and, you know, trying to gather some resources that i'm familiar with and just take it a day at a time, i guess. we are all in awe in the studio of this image. take a look. this incredible rescue in the santa cruz mountains, so this car is teetering on the edge of a cliff. three people are inside and a of scotts valley. luckily a chp officer calmly told them how to get out of the car safely and thankfully red brake lights for miles, all traffic turned around at nyack because of spinouts over donner summit. chain controls are in effect. if you are headed to tahoe, have a full tank of gas, plenty of snacks and some patience. the winter storms have buried the sierra in several feet of

well, this is what san francisco firefighters battled tonight in the mission district, roaring flames shooting out of an apartment building. tonight fire damage has displaced 15 people. the building is on 20th street and harrison. luckily everyone made it out safely. no one was injured. no word yet tonight what started this fire. if you've gone shopping lately, eggs have been hard to find or a lot more expensive and you can blame it on the impact of the bird flu and a ban on eggs from caged birds. so would you spend $10 to get your hands on a dozen eggs? apparently people in san francisco are. in fact, tonight in north beach one walgreen's was selling cartons of eggs for 9.99 each. people are sweeping

them off the shelves. restaurant owners are feeling the pinch. a case of eggs cost $103 at one san francisco wholesaler and you could be feeling the effects when you're dinner bill arrives. >> or your withanother effect the flooding. >> who knows? yeah. it's going to be another busy day, another first alert weather day with more rain headed our way. it seemingly won't end, but there is an end to this weather pattern and it is in sight. we could use a good stretch of dry weather, maybe say seven to ten days. eventually we'd like to see rain chances returning to continue chipping away at the drought. we need a break. there's a stronger storm system on the way late tonight into tomorrow. let's look at first alert doppler. i showed you the loop earlier. there are some showers making their way through the santa cruz mountains trying to hold together through the santa clara valley. you might get a brief passing shower in san jose the next 15, 20 minutes. a

few light showers for the north bay, but the main event moves in before the sun comes up tomorrow morning, the first batch of showers moving in a few showers before sunrise. widespread heavy rain will fall from about 5 a.m. through about 10 a.m. across the bay area. that's a longer window of time than today's rain and it's going to be more intense. those two factors really help for the rain doesn't last t all day. it moves to the east by late morning, noon at the latest. we still see off and on showers during the afternoon, but it's not going to be raining everywhere all the time. slightly more widespread shower activity moves in saturday evening. once that passes through we're into an off and on shower pattern the rest of saturday night. a few wake-up sunday showers and moves on out and largely dry sunday during the daylight hours. rain moves up from the south at first. this storm system winds up on top of us,

so widespread rain sunday night continuing into drive time monday morning. there's going to be some people heading off to work as usual. the duration of the martin luther king holiday, especially the first half of the day, widespread rain. a few lingering showers will be in the afternoon. overall we're looking at another 1 1/2 to 3 inches of rain across the bay area on a widespread basis on already saturated ground. that's enough to cause more flooding issues both tomorrow morning and again sunday night into early monday. the higher elevations in the north bay and santa cruz mountains could pick up more than 4 inches of additional rain. the wind energy is going to be a factor with this first system. the winds pick up overnight peaking as the heavy rain moves through tomorrow, widespread gusts in the 30 to 40-mile an hour range, some gusts up to 50 miles an hour, more than strong enough to do additional tree damage and result in additional power outages. in the high sierra the winter storm warning continues through 4 p.m. monday. they are

going to add up 3 to 6 feet of snow the next few days. traffic will be an absolute disaster. it's going to be impossible basically for anybody trying to come back from the martin luther king holiday weekend and for anyone trying to get up there if they haven't been paying attention to the forecast. the rain chances do dwindle after monday's system. a few showers tuesday and wednesday amounting to less than a quarter inch of rainfall and then we're looking dry thursday and friday. in the short term, we're waiting on the rain to arrive, seeing clouds increasing, 50s across the board. temperatures stay in the 50s through tonight and all day tomorrow. the very warmest spots may get close to 60 degrees. this is in between the afternoon scattered showers. widespread rain tomorrow morning, then tapers off to showers. on sunday more miss than hit sunday, then morein r thunderstorms. we'll see lingering showers tuesday and wednesday and what you've been waiting for, a couple dry days
