re-election bid and as the white house struggles to contain the damage. cbs's christina ruffini tonight at the white house has the latest. christina. >> reporter: good evening, adriana, you broke the story earlier this week, and today a top white house lawyer says that they found more documents with classified markings at president biden's home. those documents are now in the hands of the department of justice. departing for his delaware home friday, the president ignored reporters' questions about the doj inquiry into his handling or possible mishandling of classified material. it's the same wilmington residence white house attorney richard sauber says he visited thursday to supervise the handover of one document found in a room adjacent to the garage. while there are five additional pages with classified markings were discovered for a total of six pages. doj officials on site immediately took possession of the documents according to his statement. >> the extraordinary circumstances here require the appointment of a special counsel

for this matter. >> reporter: this week attorney general merrick garland announced the appointment of special counsel robert hur to head the investigation. >> what i can tell you is that we were not given a heads-up. >> reporter: something the white house says it was not informed about in advance. >> that is something that we learned like many of you watching the news. >> reporter: the first documents were discovered in november, but the white house did not go public about the issue until monday, the same day cbs news broke the story, frustrating fellow democrats. >> we've got to review how departing presidents and vice presidents are going about organizing the archiving of their documents, both classified sk and unclassified. >> reporter: house republicans expressing outrage this week announced their own investigation. >> my sense is there will probably be more. they're just not being very forthcoming in this. >> what's been the range of reaction from both sads of the aisle? >> reporter: adriana republicans

lorenzo, keep rising. >> you guys are going to flood again. let's face reality hear. >> reporter: in salinas, fears the rivers there could reach its banks and flood the country's salad bowl where 70% of lettuce is grown. the april harvest is in jeopardy, another threat a flooded highway that could isolate the monterey peninsula. >> it's concerning, people are being flooded, roads are being inundated. >> reporter: statewide many roads are washed out. hillsides have given way, and asphalt has collapsed creating growing sinkholes like this one that began monday in los angeles. in the sierra nevada a warning to holiday travelers to stay off the roads due to dangerous snow. for storm weary californians, it's an anxious wait and see. >> just hoping for not too much property damage. >> reporter: today's storm is so powerful crews had to call off the search for the 5-year-old boy who was swept away monday by raging flood waters. it's just not safe.

adriana. >> thinking of his family, danya, thank you. for more on the storm threat, let's bring in meteorologist molly macellum from our partners at the weather channel. good evening. >> reporter: another wet weekend on the west coast with another push of pacific moisture moving in. this is up and down the california coast, not only for tonight but also tomorrow as we're watching another push of moisture move in. and that goes from northern california all the way down to san diego. this extends into the upcoming week. how much rain are we talking about? 1 to 2 inches of rain may not seem like a lot but on top of everything we have seen already this is going to cause more problems. there are some spots that have picked up more rain in the first 14 days of january than all of last year. not to mention the snow. of course ski resorts popular for the holiday weekend, traveling to and from will be very difficult. and looking ahead to next weekend, a much drier pattern takes over. that's great news. >> thank you. there is some relief for americans whose budgets have been pummelled by soaring costs.

inflation is slowing down to an annual rate of 6.5%, driven largely by a steep drop in gas prices. but some supermarket staples are not cheaper by the dozens. cbs's michael george has the details. >> reporter: what was once a cheap breakfast staple in almost every kitchen has somehow become a luxury item. >> it's like $8 a dozen for a ju jumbo egg, which is ridiculous. >> reporter: even as inflation is cooling, the cost of eggs keeps rising. last january the average price for a dozen eggs was understood $2. by december it had more than doubled to over $4. even dprogrocery stores are fee the pinch. >> we're actually losing money on every dozen eggs we sell right now. if we go higher, we price ourselves out of the competition completely. >> reporter: the main reason for the skyrocketing price is the deadliest outbreak of avian flu in u.s. history.

actors who are also adversaries? >> reporter: these green triangles cited by navy ships off the coast of california in 2019 turned out to be drones. they appeared at the same time chinese merchant vessels were in the area. there's no proof the drones came from those ships, but one u.s. official said china is highly suspect. in all these sightings now, we've got 510 has any physical evidence such as debris been recovered? >> the debris that has been recovered has not raised any notable alarms, and that's as much as i'll say. >> reporter: in other words no alien spacecraft, but there are still ufos that maneuver in ways that baffle america's best fighter pilots, and the man who was once their commander in chief. >> we can't explain how they moved their trajectory. you know, i think that we're -- people still take seriously

russia's space agency says it will launch an urgent mission next month. the soyuz capsule docked at the international space station is leaking cool ant, so the three crew members including the american need a new ride back to earth. cbs's mark strassmann has the story. >> when the russian soyuz launched last september it ferlied a three-man crew to the international space station for a six-month stay, but in december while docked to the station, their ride home suddenly sprung a leak. >> russian flight controllers and the flight controllers here at mission control in houston have been noticing a stream of particles coming out of the soyuz ms22 vehicle. >> reporter: investigators believe a micro meteoroid a tiny space rock flying 15,000 miles an hour struck a coolant line.
