now at 11:00, tracking rain into the bay area, but there is an end in sight. bay area businesses are trying to the last two weeks, while at the same time, attempting to dry their business outcome after flooding. we are trying to get an idea of how much all of the storm damage will cost the state. president biden approved a disaster declaration across california. we remain under a flood watch, for the next 24 hours, because of this new system. coming into the bay area tonight but here's a look at conditions right now. continued and scattered showers, with some areas getting hit hard today. all this rain adds more concerns about flooding and mudslides in the hard-hit communities. storms have been

pounding the peninsula all week long, tonight pick a huge tree fell in san bruno, blocking cunningham way. it was so big, crews had to use a wood chipper to get it out of the way? meanwhile, drivers had to take other streets to get around the mess. a close call tonight in menlo park after a big tree fell, plucking a driveway on berkeley avenue which took down some power lines. pg&e crews are on the scene trying to get a look at the back. all right, when will it end? darren peck has more pick >> tomorrow at noon we will be done with this one and then another coming on wednesday. we will look at that and i will show you the light at the end of the tunnel, because it looks really great but we are right in the middle of this one, right now, and it hasg stthr any differwh we last look at t live, here today together at the end of the 6:00 newscast. we started with rain around 1:00, today. even with that amount of time, the totals are not huge. this system is nothing if not persistent, but

at least, it is not particularly heavy. we have about half an inch of rain so far, and as we take it forward, it will go like this for most of the night, through the early morning hours, and then come it will start to lighten up by the time we get into about 4:00 or 6:00, there are a few light showers and turns off past at 9:00 in the morning. between now and then we will still get another three quarters of an inch of rain on this but the ground is saturated but it will not be terribly windy, but it will be windy enough that we will probably have downed trees tomorrow morning on the commitment that will be a big issue and there is still a flood watch in effect until tomorrow night at midnight. we will talk about tomorrow and the rest of the forecast for wednesday storm coming up in the complete forecast in just a few minutes. back to you pick >> thank you. the rain should let up in sentences go sometime tomorrow morning. business owners are waiting for that break in the rain to add up their losses but that includes a small bookstore in the mission. >> betty yu checked in with the owners, to see the progress

they made on drying out their store. >> reporter: silver sprocket here in the mission is recovering from that new year's eve storm. their basement was flooded, so, all through the ground floor, you can see inventory they saved under display tables and in corners. remove the storm, and broken drainage pipes turned the basement of this valencia street in the comics shop into a small lake. silver sprocket estimates the flooding caused thousands of dollars in damages. it ruined inventory, and furniture , and mold is not a big problem in this space. >> the interruption to business is what the really horrible costly part is, but our community showed up to help us move our inventory really quick after we asked for help. >> reporter: owner, of the ehrlich put out the call for help on social media pick >> if you have rain boots and muscles and can help us out, need help right now. about 30 people showed up over the next hour, and help to bring up all

these boxes around us . they made a fire line from the basement up through the back of the store, and past boxes to each other. it was incredibly sweet and heartwarming. >> reporter: the flood also forced the store to pause its online operation. >> we couldn't find anything to send out mail orders, so we stopped promoting anything, and we just ended up going for a couple of weeks with barely any sales at all, and it is still pretty scary. we still do not really know how we will pay our bills this month. >> reporter: while the exact financial losses are not yet known, avi said he is incredible thankful for the longtime customers and strangers who got them to this point? >> i really appreciate it. i think people just know that we are a small and independent operation, and we don't have the resources of barnes & noble or amazon or wherever. >> that includes threats of letting your gilroy tonight. santa clara county has extended evacuation orders for those living near bloomfield avenue. between highway 25 and the one

52. the warning comes after two levees broke in neighboring san benito county. people should pack clothing and medication, and get ready to be in an area that is above the flooding if it rains a lot. john ramos has that story. >> pescadero marsh is where all the water running down from the mountain streams into the sea , but in between here and there is the town of pescadero itself. in the last few weeks, living there has been quite an adventure. >> reporter: just as you approach the town there is a small flooded area blocking one lane of pescadero creek road., sergio lives on that street, and says it looks very different when the nearby ocean is at high tide, pushing the water back to the town. >> the tide rises, the water has no place to go. and so, here we are. it starts flooding there, and then it

starts flooding, you can see the creek behind all these homes. >> reporter: video from last week shows the field behind his house is a raging river. at times, the road on both sides of his home has been closed, trapping him in. with power poles beginning to lean one way or another, sergio and his wife have gone without electricity for as long as seven days but he says it is something that people in pescadero are getting used to. >> we are the forgotten people, here. we just upped the power, the city is -- the county, they do what they can, but always short on resources to do it. >> reporter: on this day, the main street in town looked remarkably untouched and pescadero creek was flowing normally under the bridge, but eric hammer owns the house bordering the swollen creek, and he said, while there has been flooding before, never the frequently. >> three times in a row, like, new year's eve, the ninth, and

then last night. the worst one was new year's eve, because nobody was ready. there was a logjam at the bridge. >> reporter: this is what that logjam looked like as the first storm brought down full-size trees from the wildfire burns car. that backed the water up into hammers property, carving off 20 feet of his land. he took this video of what saturday's flooding looks like as the creek rose 20 feet, pushing up against his family's rustic cabin , saved only by the wall of plastic and sandbags that lined the entire lake length of his property. >> we felt we were on noah's ark, for a minute. we were sleeping in the camper next door, . >> reporter: he says he is grateful the county has worked to clear the creek of obstructions wherever possible because anything blocking the waters pass to the sea only makes the problem worse. >> wow. there are other

challenges with road closures on the peninsula, including highway 92 into half moon bay. still shut down because of a large sinkhole in that road . >> a stretch of busy highway 37 in the north bay is shut down due to flooding. the closure is between highway 101 and atherton avenue. officials spent the day working on clearing the floodwater off the road. da lin is there to show us the effects. >> reporter: the cause of the closure, all these cars are being diverted off of highway 37 and onto local streets. it is upsetting the effected drivers and the people who live in this area. they are dealing with a lot more traffic outside of their homes. >> reporter: the loud bus of multiple pumps draining water away from highway 37, and down into lovato creek. for many frustrated drivers, these pumps couldn't go fast enough. >> 30 minutes. >> reporter: that is how much time the highway closure added to elkins drive on sunday but she lives in novato and hopes are that her families deli, located next to highway 37. >> all the ramps are closed, flooded. reporter: ramps that

closure is a double whammy pick it up to her commute time and hurts the family business. >> we have been losing money, sometimes it's only two people walking in through the day. >> reporter: caltrans says the creek overflowed the levy and flooded the highway on saturday. highway 37 is a workhorse, connecting drivers between marin county and vallejo. >> data at least 30 minutes to my commute. >> i think i will cancel my meet up with friends in san rafael. >> reporter: local, state, and federal politicians have been talking for decades, to fix or replace highway 37 because it gets flooded so often, but no solutions. >> it is a lack of political will. we have got to spend the money to fix the problem. >> i feel horrible, because it just takes a lot of time, my days off get shortened. >> reporter: as the pumps continue to divert water away from the road, elko, and other drivers stuck in the mess have

a simple demand . >> fix-it. >> reporter: caltrans was hoping to reopen highway 37 on monday. they say they simply do not have a timeframe because it continues to rain . >> caltrans is a long-term fix for highway 37, which is about 21 miles long would likely cost billions of dollars. further north in sonoma county, people living in greenville are keeping a close watch on the russian river last week. the rain flooded several homes and businesses with more storms on the way, some low-lying homes. >> highway 1, big sur has closed the road to traffic. caltrans sent out a picture of the slide south of carmel just beyond dixie bridge. both lines of the roadway are closed, but apparently not for long. that area as the rainfall subsides in the coming days. have had

>> we will talk about skipping ahead to wednesday and trying to fit it all in. first let's review what will happen tonight and tomorrow. tomorrow being a holiday, monday, martin luther king jr. day, we will try to keep this at the top of the newscast but here's another review of how this goes. it will stay just like it is now for the next 3 to 4 hours. as we enter the early morning, the predawn hours tomorrow, things will lighten up. into the morning commute, however much there is , tomorrow, on a holiday, the rain is lighter. by about at 9:00 or 10:00 or 11:00, the rain is pretty much done. that will be an end to this. a few showers off the coast but they cannot get us. they will be off the coast pixel, you will have a good day tomorrow, really, once you get past at 9:00 or 10:00 in terms of not having to worry about rain anymore between now and then, look at the focus of the heaviest rain. it is going down

to the south bay, and what we care about, when we hear that i'll see that is, santa cruz mountains. and, there is going to be at least another inch or so, to fall, in the santa cruz mountains. everyone else gets about, you know, another half an inch on top of that but we all have a flood watch. the san lorenzo river, already ready ready to flood its banks in the neighborhood, that is something to watch and definitely be aware of your surroundings in the santa cruz mountains, tomorrow morning. even in the north bay, you still have flood watch, you should not take that lightly as the national weather service, this is going for everyone. of course, the other aspect is the wind, primary concern there is more downed trees. the wind was not terribly strong today, and we had several that we could show you just from today's rainfall, so, it really is the combination of the ground just getting so saturated, and these trees being so stressed and weakened from severe draft and it does not take much to knock them over but ev ath is goodth

storms have had a repeat advisers, it does not get that bad, but it is strong enough overnight, there we are through the next hour, here we are, tomorrow morning, this is looking ahead into the early afternoon and evening big sur, really, as long as we get through noon and 1:00 tomorrow, we can still have downed trees because are the main things to still keep in mind on this one. clear it out, through the storm tomorrow, tuesday and sunday, it is a break, so, let's look ahead, now, because here is the wednesday storm. that one shows up , we are looking at wednesday afternoon and as we go along the range on that, we can see in the long-range forecast to bring it home, and that gets us into the early evening on wednesday, rain overnight wednesday into early thursday morning, and then by thursday afternoon, that will be done. it is a quick get in and get out. when you look at the rainfall totals, they are not too overwhelming. so, this last storm, on wednesday night and thursday morning, will deliver about another half an inch of rain. breezy with it, and that is it. if you look at the long-range forecast, we will

pick up on that wednesday . in fact, we are looking at thursday now, there is the exit of that system, we were just looking at? so, what comes in behind it? let's let it go and we will watch the storm track reorient. it will have to, because there will be a dominant ridge of high pressure setting up off the coast but the storm will have to go around. that gets us through january 25th but here's another way to look at it let's coloring the map, for anywhere it will rain that you can measure it, from friday, going all the way to january 26, and there is that really beautiful donut hole right there. that we are in, where nothing happens. so, here is what it looks like in the seven day forecast. we still have a first alert day tomorrow, there are still some genuine concerns, here, from the flooding standpoint, and downed trees. we have got to get through one more day of this. let's take the first alert seriously, for monday, and then, i think the wednesday and thursday system is going to be manageable, we do not have any first alert weather for that, and once we look ahead towards the friday and

an unfortunate side effect of all the rain has been the alarming number of sewage spills onto streets, and into the bay. >> devin fehely has the story, which begins with something that seems rather obvious. >> no system should be dumping untreated sewage into the bay. >> reporter: unfortunately, says the executive director of the nonprofit sentences go bay

keeper, that is exactly what has been happening. a dirty downside to all the runoff and flooding from the last few weeks. >> we should not, in this day and age, be having raw sewage spills into the bay, or into our streets and creeks. this is definitely a problem that we see in a lot of underdeveloped countries , where they do not have wastewater systems and they don't have a way to treat their sewer water. >> reporter: according to the california water resources board, there have been dozens of sewage spills after the bay area has been battered with unrelenting rain. what is the root cause? >> inadequate and aging interceptor is largely to blame. too much rain can overwhelming wastewater treatment systems, forcing sewage to be diverted or dumped into the bay before it is fully treated. >> big rain events, they are not actually able to handle all the water coming in. we are

seeing all of these raw sewage spills in the streets, and then come untreated sewage getting into the bay. >> reporter: is exposed to one of those spills, there could be serious impact on your health. >> you have the potential for people to come into contact with pathogens, and bacteria, viruses, and these can cause really severe illnesses in people. people can get very sick. they can get gastrointestinal problems, and also infections. >> reporter: which is a good reminder to steer clear of floodwaters, whenever possible. in the meantime, sf bay keeper will continue to advocate for better treatment systems that will make spills less likely in the future. coming up, a

it's hard to believe that at the beginning of winter, the 30 day outlook for rain in january was calling for below average. that didn't exactly work out, but there are probabilities associated with all of that, and went the wrong way. and, there are positives to all the rain we have been getting, just take a look at the conditions of the reservoirs in the south bay. for instance, new video of humans reservoir in morgan hill, gilroy, one of 10 in silicon valley that are full or overflowing. santa clara valley water district says that you miscounted lake and reservoirs are all above 10% capacity.
