news app on your cell phone or connected tv. i'm shanelle kaul, cbs news, new it's wednesday, january 18th, 2023. this is the "cbs morning news." a scary situation for a qantas plane while through flying over the ocean. what triggered the distress call. mystery in massachusetts. a woman vanishes on new year's day. her body nowhere to be found. now her husband is being charged with murder. guns at checkpoints. the tsa confiscates a record number of firearms in 2022. the top five airports that seized the most. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. breaking overnight, a helicopter crashed near the ukrainian capital of kyiv has killed at least 17 people including the

-- at least 18 people including the country's interior minister and three children. it crashed in a suburb east of kyiv. other government are among the dead. a regional governor says a total of 29 were injured including 15 children. no word on the cause of the crash. back here at home, severe weather is making its way east and across the plains this morning after pummelling california with weeks oftorrena. this is what it looks like in the denver area as parts of colorado are expected to get more than a foot of snow. people are being urged to stay home and off the roads. while california is finally seeing drier weather, the cleanup continues after hundreds of mudslides throughout the state. the danger of more mudslides and landslides as well as sinkholes could continue for months because of the ground being so saturated. jarred hill is here in new york covering all of this for us.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. you know, because of that ongoing threat of the mudslides, the landslides, the sinkholes, officials don't know when some of these roads in california are going to reopen. this is a problem that's not impacting only drivers. a passenger captured this cell phone video from inside a commuter train. it was stopped by 100-foot mudslide in alameda county tuesday. more than 200 riders had to evacuate. authorities say nobody was hurt, and the train didn't derail. >> i think one of the scariest things was just walking by that car that the landslide fell on and just seeing all the rocks and debris. >> reporter: heavy rain from recent waves of severe storms that have battered california have caused more than 500 landslides. experts say the danger for more could loom for months. >> once you've had a lot of rain and the sponge is full, then the next rainstorm that comes in, the bar is lower for triggering new landslides. >> looking down here toward the

entrance to the campground -- >> reporter: mudslides destroyed camp sites at the sequoia and kings canyon national parks leading to temporary closures. another mudslide rendered marjorie cruz's berkeley home unlivable. >> hopig and praying and keeping our fingers crossed that it doesn't take the rest of my house out. >> reporter: president biden is set to visit affected communities in california tomorrow. >> our heart is with all of the families, all the families in the communities that are hurting. >> reporter: meanwhile, severe storms continue to move eastward to the denver region with forecasts of high winds and over a foot of snow expected to disproportionately impact the unhoused. >> you got to make sure you have enough supplies to stay warm. >> reporter: the overnight snowfall has already led to flight cancelations and crashes on the roads. going back to california for a second here, the damage from those storms is spread across 41 of the state's 58 counties. officials say that it's going to take a while to really get a final tally of how much this will all cost.

but the number of houses and buildings deemed uninhabitable could end up being in the low thousands. anne-marie? >> i cannot imagine. jarred hill in new york. thank you so much. so breaking overnight, a qantas airways plane issued a mayday call mid flight over the pacific ocean. the boeing 737 traveling from new zealand managed to land safely in sydney, australia this morning. also 145 passengers disembarked normally. qantas says the plane experienced an issue with one of its two engines about an hour from sydney. emergency crews were on standby as the plane touched down. a massachusetts man is expected to be arraigned today on charges of murdering his missing wife. 47-year-old brian walshe is already in custody after pleading not guilty to misleading investigators. 39-year-old ana walshe was reportedly last seen on new year's day leaving the couple's home in the town of cohasset near boston. her body has not been found.

authorities say blood and a broken knife were discovered in the basement along with other evidence at a nearby waste facility. >> in this particular case, my guess is that a lot of this evidence came back, a lot of the dna came back to ana walshe and possibly his, as well. we don't know if he was injured in a scuffle. >> prosecutors say brian walshe was seen on video buying $450 worth of cleaning supplies the day after his wife was last seen. and a failed republican candidate is expected in court today accused in a string of shootings targeting democratic lawmakers in new mexico. police say solomon pena was angry about his november election loss and falsely claimed it was rigged. he allegedly confronted one of his victims at her home following his defeat. scott macfarlane has the details. >> reporter: solomon pena just three months ago was a candidate for the new mexico state house, championing himself as a maga republican.

he's under arrest accused of targeting democratic officials because he was unhappy with his loss in november which he falsely argued was fraud. >> this was about a right-wing radical. an election denier who was arrested today, and someone who did the worst imaginable thing you can do when you have a political disagreement which is turn that to violence. >> reporter: pena allegedly hired four accomplices to fire bullets into the homes of two high-profile democratic state legislators and two county commissioners according to police. one was adrian barboa who found evidence of gunfire after returning home from christmas shopping. >> my home was shot right through my front door four times, out my back window, right through my living room and kitchen, right where i had just been playing only hours before with my brand-new grandbaby. >> reporter: pena confronted at least two of the four targets at their homes just weeks earlier after the election. he said in so many words at your home, don't certify this election? >> he said, i want results now, and he was definitely aggressive.

>> reporter: in their report, police say photos show pena with one of the alleged accomplices, and that individual with multiple guns and ammunition, and that pena paid one of the shooters 500. the report said he was unhappy with one of the shootings and asked them to be more aggressive, to shoot lower into the houses and do so earlier in the evening when targets would less likely be laying down. new mexico house speaker javier martinez whose home was also targeted was born in mexico. >> that is a place where politics and journalism can actually get you killed. i would have never thought that that could be the case in my own country here. >> reporter: police say in one of the shootings a state legislator's 10-year-old daughter woke up to bullet debris falling on her head. solomon pena makes his initial court appearance wednesday in new mexico. scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol. the tsa says it is a cord number of guns at a u.s. airport -- at u.s. airports

last year. more than 6,500 firearms were found in passenger bags, an almost 10% increase from the previous year. 88% of the guns were loaded. atlanta's hartsfield-jackson international airport topped the list with 448 guns confiscated. it was followed by airports in dallas, houston, nashville, and phoenix. >> unfortunately we're seeing more and more where folks are saying i forgot it was in my bag. >> passengers have to notify airlines and secure unloaded guns in checked luggage. last month the tsa raised the maximum fine for passengers caught with a gun at security checkpoints to nearly $15,000. embattled new york republican congressman george santos has been assigned to serve on two house committees. republican leadership gave santos seats on the science, space, and technology committee as well as the small business committee. santos is facing multiple

blocking tiktok, and an attempted kidnapping caught on video. those are some of the headlines on the "cbs morning news." "the seattle times" reports police arrested a man for allegedly trying to kidnap a barista from a coffee shop. surveillance video from monday shows a man using a looped zip tie to try and drag the female barista out of a drive-through window in a seattle suburb. she was handing him change at the time. the woman was able to get out of the man's grip and closed the window. the suspect drove away. >> they are in vulnerable positions because usually they're, you know, controlling those spots by themselves at early hours in the morning when it's dark outside. but this barista did an awesome job of protecting herself and fighting this person off. >> police say the barista suffered minor cuts. tips from the community led to the suspect's arrest. "the texas tribune" says several texas universities blocked student and faculty access to tiktok on campus wi-fi networks. the university of texas at

austin says that it will wait to eliminate risks to information in the network. the governor recently issued a directive requiring all state agencies to remove the app from government-issued devices. there are concerns that china could collect user data from tiktok. and "people" says sister andre, the world's oldest person, has died at the age of 118. she died yesterday at a retirement home in france. sister andre dedicated most of her life to religious service, according to a statement issued by guinness world records last year. she served as a teacher, governess, and aretaker to children during world war ii. guinness also said that she was the oldest living survivor of covid after testing positive two years ago. still to come, an iconic sports car goes green. we're going to show the first-ever electrified corvette and tell you how much it will cost.
