this woman. >> now gwin faces a misdemeanor battery charge for hosing down the woman, but reverend amos brown, president of the local chapter of the naacp, feels collier gwin doesn't deserve to be charged criminally. reverend brown personally connected with gwin and received an apology. >> mr. gwin admitted his wrong. he admitted it to me personally and i accepted it. >> reverend brown says the city of san francisco needs to take the blame for this situation between a business owner and a member of the unhoused community escalating to this level. >> i think that this city has been negligent, has played too

much politics around this opisn unhoused on the streets without addressing mental health or drug addiction issues. he said it's going to take a community approach and hopes the incident captured on this video will motivate the community to do better. >> i've forgiven and i hope that the san francisco community will forgive him. >> it sounds like the decision to charge came from the d.a.'s office, no surprise there, but obviously a lot of attention paid to this. what is the d.a. saying about all this tonight? >> the d.a. sent out this statement basically saying that she pressed these charges after the san francisco police department did their investigation, but she says that two wrongs don't make a right, that they will also go after those responsible for the vandalism at gwin's gallery. >> yeah. people retaliating taking matters into their own hands. thank you so much. the rain is back tonight. it is not here to stay, though,
11:04 pm
and you know what? a lot of people are probably relieved to hear that. the past few weeks were the wettest in 161 years here in the bay area. the storms dumped at least 22 trillion gallons of water across the state. it's water we really needed, but like paul says, we didn't want it all at once, but that is what happened anyway and it led to scenes like this, people literally floating down flooded streets, businesses flooded, entire neighborhoods submerged and people having to be rescued. one woman in sonoma county was found dead inside her flooded car. power lines and trees crashed into homes and cars. the ground was so soaked mudslides and falling boulders blocked highways and massive waves did a lot of damage, too. this is what it looked like in capitola. that's gotten the attention of president biden who will be on his way here soon. more on that in a second, but first, here we go again. the rain is back. this is what it looks like outside now as we speak.
11:05 pm
while it might not be nice driving in it, this what is it looked like in martinez along pleasant hill road. it's not all bad news, right, paul? >> right. i know we're a little sensitive to any additional rain at this point, but this is more of a typical quick moving winter storm system that doesn't drop a lot of rain even though for a little while there are some heavy downpours here and there. let's look at first alert doppler. this system is moving through very quickly. moved into the north bay late this afternoon and early this evening. the heaviest rain has already dropped farther to the south and will be out of the bay area before sunrise tomorrow morning. there are pockets of locally heavy rain, especially over fremont at the moment extending the from palo alto across the bay and up into the tri-valley around livermore, but this is dropping to the south very quickly. even the heaviest rainfall rates aren't in place long enough to cause any significant flooding threat. we haven't had any flooding reports, haven't had any wind damage reports. you can see the back edge of even the shower activity is
11:06 pm
dropping towards san rafael and will move through san francisco in the next half hour or so. put everything in motion. more rain is headed for the santa cruz mountains. you'll pick up some locally heavy downpours the next hour, 90 minutes or so. we'll switch over to futurecast. look how fast this moves out, showers winding down in san jose by 1 a.m. and the rain is out of here by 3 a.m. we'll start off the day with a mix of clouds and sunshine, but it just looks like a generally nice day, a bit chilly, but we can handle that. this is the beginning of a dry stretch that will last a while. we've been tracking the wind throughout the evening. we haven't had any significant wind gusts along the cold front moving through. a change in wind direction outlined by the streamline, the map indicates exactly where the front is, lines up with that pocket of heavier rain. it's another round of rain. i know it's not what people wanted to see, but after that about a seven to ten-day stretch of dry weather. we'll talk more about that coming up.
11:07 pm
>> never thought i'd so be excited to hear that. >> what a difference a month makes. president biden is just hours from touching incaliia. he'll be stopping in both santa clara and santa cruz counties tomorrow and he'll get an up- close look at the damage. he'll be briefed on the recovery as well. the santa cruz county coastline got pummeled. new satellite images show how badly capitola was hit. this is the wharf in october. compare that to this picture of the coastline taken yesterday. the water is muddy. the pier is smashed. there's debris all over the beach. the numbers show just how bad things got, too. at least 20 people died. there have been more than 500 landslides, more than 1.6 million people that lost power at some point in these storms and the damage statewide is expected to surpass $1 billion. mudslides have caused more than a couple issues for us lately. they've been a headache for commuters and dangerous for homeowners. an expert told us the threat doesn't necessarily end when
11:08 pm
the rain stops. >> for some of the deeper, larger land slides where it takes longer time for that water to seep down to the layers that are destabilized, it can take weeks and sometimes even months for the danger to really be past. >> this is a map of the landslides we've seen just this month. most of the bay area is in dark blue. that means lots of activity reported. landslides are to blame for canceling train service until next week, also. commuters who use the ace train to get from the central valley to silicon valley have to find another way to work. landslides in niles canyon forced trains to return back two days in a row. the first slide stranded more than 200 people several hours yesterday. today it happened again. >> i saw the tree coming. the leaves was coming and i thought the tree was going to hit the window and break it. so i had to duck. i had to go on the floor. >> three people ended up with minor injuries because of how abruptly the train had to stop.
11:09 pm
passengers were evacuated to another train and taken back to pleasanton. on the peninsula, homeowners in belmont have had quite the stressful situation on their hands. they're watching for sliding hillsides there. the city says it's doing everything it can to help and in port richmond our chopper spotted crews tarping a hillside near homes in the sea cliff area today. we first reported on that problem two weeks ago when the hillside started cracking after the first big storms. the weather has not been kind to business owners either. mx3 fitness in san francisco's castro district flooded and to close during what should have been their busiest month of the year. people have been donating to the gym and it reopened today. the owner shared on social media there's still a lot of cleaning up to do. he also thanked everyone who helped out. straight ahead in sports, the bay area's influence on the tennis landscape at the first of the sport's grand slam events. and it was back to work on

ready for the end of the weekend this time around because sunday it is all about the 9ers. levi stadium is getting ready to host the divisional round of the nfl playoffs. people were getting fitted at the fan shop at levi's today. they say they're ready for sunday. >> i was watching it, but they have to face a d like us, number one d, top five o-line. i don't think they got anything on us. >> we have a solid team. everyone's ready. we got purdy. everyone's ready. so it should be a good one, no fear here. >> i love how 9ers fans are always ready for anything. >> they're just 100% convinced they're going to walk out of that stadium on sunday with their team advancing to the nfc championship game. i love their confidence level. >> we're fine with that. >> i'll take it! hey, nfl, yeah, the 49ers still on our minds. they've won five divisional round games in a row. why not add another one at the expense of dallas? no problem for the 49ers last

year led behind a strong performance from deebo samuel. the cowboys and the fan base sent home in the wildcard round. coach kyle shanahan knows his players are proud at what they built. now he wants them loud in the locker room before they run out of the tunnel on sunday. >> it's crazy. i mean guys, you got a lot of grown men that hear their name in a big room and they get real nervous, which is crazy. you ask them to break down and they talk nonstop and you ask them to break down the team and it's like crickets. >> not everybody is willing to speak up in front of the crowd and fire back. there are guys that will. >> i think today he might have took a little shot at our defense saying the cowboys defense might be playing better than us or something. so, of course, i took that to heart, but he's always trying to find ways to bring the best out of us. pivot to the nhl out of the shark's mouth san jose hosting

as we all know by now, we've been dealing with a lot of rain here. up in the sierra, they've been trying to navigate a ton of snow and while you might want to see it, getting up there more than a little rough. marley ginter talked to drivers. >> reporter: it doesn't take much to run into trouble on these roads. we came across a driver who slid and got stuck in a snowbank before his car even made it to the highway. what's the worst you've seen so far being in this area? >> in this area literally as we're getting through truckee it was just almost whiteout. i was like oh, this is fun. >> the snow is flying pretty thick and the roads are pretty icy. >> reporter: an eagle scout now leading a boys and girls troop knows how to prepare if he gets stranded on the road. >> this will get you down to about zero.
11:21 pm
this is a down jacket. these are both by feathered friends. >> reporter: good idea in a long drive through the blowing snow from truckee to the bay area, rough travel in the sierra with a foot or more expected for the passes and it's expected to snow as low as 3,000 feet. once you get through all that, get ready for the rain. >> yes. i am prepared, got chains. i got everything like supplies. so just in case, but, you know, the goal is to not be here that long. >> i have a pretty monster truck that could get through it, but you never know when there's an accident and you're stuck for hours. always, always, always carry things to keep you warm and dry and safe. >> a monster truck in the snow doesn't sound too bad. >> but four wheel drive does not mean four wheel stop. >> this is true. >> yes. no matter the amount of snow, it can cause some big problems and the rain can lead to slick roads. it's raining now at sfo and snowing in the high sierra. the winter weather advisory
11:22 pm
around south lake tahoe, the snow will continue to th winter storm warning and winter weather advisory going through 4 a.m. tomorrow. total amounts, below 4,500 feet up to 10 inches of additional accumulation. above 4,500 feet up to another 20 inches of snow. chain controls are back in effect along i-80 and u.s. 50. it's rain around the bay area. let's zoom in for a closer look. the heaviest rain is making its way into the santa cruz mountains. it's not going to last very long. there are some locally heavy downpours, but they won't linger long enough to lead to a significant flooding threat. heavy downpours is not what you want to hear on the roof. there's plenty of moderate to occasionally heavy rain elsewhere including over much of alameda county. some of that rain is making its way into san jose. it will last only an hour or two. there's plenty of rain around contra costa county but tapering off around concord and lafayette as well. one more batch of showers is rolling through san francisco just making its way out of the
11:23 pm
marin headlands. this is the back edge of the rain. we'll get gusty northerly winds following up this rain bringing in a cooler air mass, but at least the rain won't lead to significant problems. futurecast shows it continuing to move away from the bay area the next few hours, should be gone by 3 a.m. things look dry for the morning commute, a mix of clouds and sunshine to start the day, plenty of afternoon sunshine. temperatures will be a good 5 or 6 degrees below normal and we're in for chilly nights over the next few nights and early mornings. some inland temperatures drop down to around freezing. it's not that far below normal for this time of year, but it's going to be noticeable as we head through the early morning hours through the weekend. wind gusts weren't too much of a problem with this system. the winds will pivot north bringing in that cooler air mass. offshore winds will continue, a little burst of stronger winds every once in a while over the next several days, also should not be problematic heading into the weekend. once that dry break starts tomorrow, it's going to continue for a while.
11:24 pm
the six to ten-day outlook from the climate prediction center, a significant chance of not only drier than normal conditions, but near zero precipitation expected, not just the bay area, but for most of the west coast. things pivot a bit in the eight to 14-day outlook. there's still a signal towards drier than normal conditions, but it's much weaker. we might get back into a more showery pattern, not necessarily a return to the atmospheric river parade, but more of a typical system every three or four days heading through with lighter showers that will still help chip away at the drought conditions. let's look now as san francisco sees one last batch of showers, upper 40s and low 50s in most spots. we'll drop down to the 30s early tomorrow morning for most inland locations with low to mid-40s around the bay. highs tomorrow will be cool, a noticeable northerly breeze. it will feel like january with highs in the low to mid-50s.
11:25 pm
we are going to return to near average temperatures as we head into the weekend. things are looking good for the 49ers game against the cowboys sunday afternoon. kickoff temperature is in the upper 50s and inland temperatures will be up to around 60 degrees from sunday onward. in fact, once we get to the second half of the weekend, it's almost exactly a normal temperature pattern, upper 50s and low 60s across the board with no rain chances in the entire seven-day forecast. it has been over a month since i've been able to say that. >> paul has been waiting to say it. thank you so much. still ahead, another tech company slashing jobs and a lot of them, why one economist says this is bound to happen.
