across the upper midwest to the great lakes and the northeast. it dumped more than a foot of snow in parts of colorado causing whiteout conditions and slippery roads. outside denver, interstate 70 was shut down in both directions after pileups involving dozens of vehicles about a mile long. president biden is set to tour storm-ravaged california today following weeks of torrential rain, powerful winds, and massive flooding that caused hundreds of landslides. jarred hill is here in new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: a lot going on. so a big question for the white house that they're trying to answer with the trip is what else does the federal government need to do to help communities that have been pummelled by almost a month of these intense storms. president biden is set to travel to california today to visit areas that have been devastated by extreme weather that's been nearly nonstop since the new year. it's brought widespread flooding, toppled trees, and triggered hundreds of landslides.

>> the president will meet with first responders, state and local officials, and communities impacted by the devastation, survey recovery efforts, and assess what additional federal support is needed. >> reporter: intense weather is now moving east. denver is digging out from the biggest january snowstorm in more than three decades. it dropped about a foot of snow the last couple of days. more than 1,000 flights at denver international airport have been delayed or canceled according to flight aware. >> i don't think i'll make it. you know, we've been over looking at hotels and waiting to see what the waiting game will probably be. >> reporter: colorado's interstate 70 was temporarily shut down in both directions after a pileup involving several semi trucks and passenger vehicles. >> hit the next one. >> reporter: the winner storm -- winter storm has also moved into parts of the midwest dumping snow in nearby nebraska, iowa, and kansas. >> we definitely need it. it's been dry. it's welcome, but just -- a

little cold. >> reporter: in arkansas, strong storms snapped power lines and brought down trees. the same system is set to usher in a cold front to the northeast, bringing with it the potential for rain, snow, and ice. now back in california, overnight president biden updated his disaster declaration, increasing the amount of federal assistance to cover 100% of debris removal and emergency protective measures for 60 days. back to you. >> all right, jaed hill in rk. thank you. there are new details in the case of a former new mexico republican state house candidate accused of organizing shootings at the homes of democratic politicians. 39-year-old solomon pena made his first court appearance yesterday and was ordered held without bond. he's accused of paying four men to fire at the homes of at least four albuquerque area democrats. he blamed election fraud for the loss in november and was trying to have the results overturned.

cbs news has learned police are now investigating a possible fifth shooting this month at the private law office of a democratic state senator. >> it was just surreal. i'm literally within minutes of reading the news article about my colleagues, there's a shooting outside my office. it was surreal. >> police believe pena met one of the alleged accomplices during the seven-year prison term he served for running a burglary ring. no one was injured in the recent shootings. prosecutors in massachusetts are now laying out the evidence against the man charged with killing his wife. they say he dismembered her and looked up ways to dispose of her body. nancy chen has the details. >> reporter: brian warl pleaded not guilty to charges wednesday including the murder of his wife ana who was last seen on new year's day. >> do you understand the charges, mr. walshe? >> i do. >> reporter: those were the only words the 47-year-old said in a massachusetts courtroom while prosecutors began laying out the case against him.

>> at 4:55 a.m. on january 1st we searched how long before a body starts to smell? >> reporter: the assistant district attorney lynn beland said walshe used an ipad. >> there were body parts, clear blood on the floor. >> reporter: he bought $450 worth of supplies on january 2nd, including a hacksaw, towels, and cleaning materials. those same items were later found at a trash facility along with ana's covid-19 vaccination card and purse and boots she was last seen wearing, but still not found ana's body. her friend, pamela bardhi, called the evidence hard to hear. >> i knew from day one that something horrible had happened, and i didn't want to believe it. the truth starting to unravel, and that's painful. >> reporter: brian walshe is being held without bail and is due back in court next month. he was already under home confinement with exceptions

while awaiting sentencing for selling fake andy warhol paintings. nancy chen, cbs news, quincy, massachusetts. newly unsealed court documents reveal what investigators found in the washington state apartment of a man accused in the idaho murders. 28-year-old bryan kohberger is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and burglary in the deaths of four students. he has not yet entered a plea. search warrant documents show investigators seized a black glove and a dozen possible human hair strands, the dust container from his vacuum cleaner and a pillow with a reddish brown stain. kohberger remains in an idaho jail. he is due back in court for a preliminary hearing in jun. we should find out if criminal charges should be filed in the deadly 2021 shooting of alec baldwin's movie "rust." prosecutors will announce the decision on social media. cinematographer halyna hutchins

was killed, and the director wounded by a bullet from a gun baldwin was holding. baldwin said he was told the gun was safe. in october he settled a wrongful death lawsuit. overseas now, new zealand's prime minister, jacinda ardern, says she will not seek re-election. fighting back tears, she announced that she's still down -- she'll step down february 7th. she said a vote to elect the next leader of her liberal labor party will be held on sunday. she called for a general election in october. ardern became the country's youngest female prime minister when she took office in 2017 at the age of 37. >> i know what this job takes, and i know that i no longer have enough in the tank to do it justice. it's that simple. >> ardern was re-elected in 2020, but since then her party has fallen behind its conservative challengers in the polls. coming up, tracking down missing money.

♪ i gotta good feeling about this, yeah ♪ ♪ i'm with it ♪ ♪ i gotta good feeling about this ♪ ♪ yeah, ♪ ♪ so let's get it ♪ ♪ i'm feeling good vibes ♪ the u.s. is expected to hit its debt ceiling for borrowing money today. last week treasury secretary janet yellen notified congress that if an agreement is not reached to raise the debt limit by today, extraordinary measures would need to be taken to avoid the government from defaulting on its obligations. that includes social security payments. the u.s. has never defaulted on its debt which is currently more than $31 trillion. house republicans are in a standoff with the biden administration over whether to raise the debt ceiling. usain bolt says he's missing millions of dollars, and reaction to the deadly chopper crash in ukraine.

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" says an investigation is under way to determine the cause of a helicopter crash in ukraine that killed at least 14 people including the country's interior minister. the chopper crashed into a kindergarten yesterday in foggy conditions near the capital of kyiv. nine people on the helicopter died including other government officials. a child on the ground was also killed. secretary of state antony blinken offered condolences. >> they have been heroic in their efforts in defense of ukraine against the russian aggression, and we stand with our friends in ukraine in mourning their loss. >> more than two dozen people were injured including 11 children. "the charlotte observer" reports another north carolina electrical substation was damaged by apparent gunfire. the utility, energy united, said there were no power outages

following tuesday's attack in randolph county. it comes weeks after substations in a nearby county were hit by gunfire knocking out power to more than 45,000 customers. there have been no arrests in that incident. the fbi is investigating along with state authorities. and "reuters" says olympic champion usain bolt is seeking to recover $12.7 million from an investment firm in jamaica. bolt's lawyer says the eight-time olympic gold medalist was informed last week that his account balance at stocks and securities limited had dwindled to just $12,000. jamaica says that it has launched an investigation into alleged fraudulent activities at the company. and last week the company said that it was aware of fraudulent activity by a former employee. still to come, the search for julian sands. the actor has been missing for nearly a week now after going hiking. i have moderate to severe ulcerative colitis. so i'm taking zeposia, a once-daily pill.

the dow losing 613 points tuesday. the nasdaq down 138, and the s&p 500 fell by 62 points. microsoft is the latest tech company to slash jobs to save money. the software giant plans to cut 10,000 workers over the next eight months. that's roughly 5% of its work force. the company says the move is in response to a slowing economy and potential recession. laid-off workers will receive 60 days' notice, health care coverage for six months, and, quote, above market several -- severance pay. federal reserve chair jerome powell has tested positive for covid-19. the fed says the 69-year-old is experiencing mild symptoms and working from home while isolating. the central bank adds powell is up to date with all r,ugh,thl impact his ability to take part in the fed's next interest rate setting meeting on january 31st.

british born actor julian sands is reported missing in the southern california mountains. authorities say that he was reported missing last friday after he went hiking in the san gabriel mountains outside of los angeles. sands had starring roles in the movies "a room with a view" and "leaving las vegas." a ground search for the 65-year-old actor was called off saturday due to avalanche risks and poor trail conditions. crews are continuing the search with helicopters and drones when weather conditions allow. people in the washington, d.c., area are concerned the famous cherry trees are blossoming way too early. seeing cherry blossoms in mid-january would be an issue, but the flowers they're seeing are actually japanese plum trees. they begin blooming in january and february around the national
