administrative leave does not signal that he'll be fired. for carl chan, chief leronne armstrong meant stability and support. >> espealaa perisi21, we were able to work with the chief and the police department and to provide us all the needed resources. >> reporter: carl is a long time chinatown community leader who appreciates when the chief dedicated an asian liaison officer to the neighborhood and beefed up patrols, but he says the chief has a good working relationship with diverse communities all across oakland. >> when i talk to the people, they are worried because every time when you see the instability, criminals may want to take advantage during this time in committing crimes. >> reporter: the shake-up happened after an independent investigation found article strong palled to properly handle serious misconduct by a sergeant. authorities say the sergeant first ripped the bumper off a car in a hit-and-run and later fired a gun in a freight elevator at

police headquarters. pastor billy dixon at thy word christian center has known chief armstrong personally and professionally. he believes he's effective and credits his work on the city's crime fighting strategy operation ceasefire. >> somebody that we worked with since he was a sergeant, worked with whim as a lieutenant and captain and never been in trouble. >> we make mistakes once in a while and i hope he stays in oakland as the police chief. >> reporter: oakland mayor sheng tao and the city administrator said in a statement the decision was not taken lightly, but we believe that it is critical for the safety of our community that we build trust and confidence between the department and the public. >> let's keep in supporting our police officers, you know, men and women in the police department. >> reporter: in addition to oakland's mayor and city administrator, the police fire stement ng e

sidelining is not a disciplinary action. the search has away by a rogue wave in pacifica. there are flowers now at espalanade beach for 22-year-old hamzah alsaudi. he was on the sfu wrestling team. he went missing during a polar plunge swim with his friends thursday morning. the coast guard searched for hours but found no sign of him. there is good news and bad news today for the bay area economy. san francisco and santa clara counties' unemployment rates both fell to 2% last month. the san francisco/san mateo area added 6,400 jobs. the east bay gained more than 3,000. santa clara county added 1,800 jobs. all silicovalltech company now for laying people off. they announced 12,000 cuts today,

about 6% of their overall workforce, and that is especially bad news for people who need their job to stay in the country. >> reporter: it still isn't any easier for people in the tech industry to hear about more layoffs from another major player in the business. >> i just think about them once i hear this news. >> reporter: for hamath, he's thinking of the people who got the news from google friday that they were losing their job. >> they are right now very stressed out and not in a mood to talk about it. >> reporter: he knows families who are on a visa like him dependent on a job to stay in the u.s. they made a life for themselves in the bay area. >> they have developed so much relationships here, developed so much friendships here. they have left their homes back in their home country and their kids are growing here. >> reporter: recruiter ellen anderson says it's essential to be proactive and start looking for your next job immediately. she knows the feeling firsthand

because she's been laid off before and worked in tech. >> i personally within the last two weeks have had a number of candidates coming to me pretty upset, devastated. they weren't expecting it at all. >> reporter: there is low employment, but still harder to find a job right now. >> i would say it's a tough market. >> reporter: there's more of a curve in the industry. >> i have been in the field now for 40 plus years and during that time we've had four or five different realignments and i would say this is one more realignment in tech. >> reporter: former edd director michael burnick points out recent layoffs are largely the result of overhiring during the pandemic. >> i think we're going to continue to see more layoffs. >> reporter: more layoffs worry workers like hamath, for his daughter and other children like her, if a parent can't find more work immediately,

elizabeth holmes may have tried to leave the country after she was convicted on

fraud charges. she booked a one-way ticket to mexico and prosecutors argue that means holmes is a flight risk. they want her to start serving her 11-year prison sentence now while she appeals her conviction. holmes was convicted last january of defrauding investors while she was in charge of theranos. there is another big tech trial happening in san francisco. elon musk is on trial tonight and its focus, a single tweet he sent back in 2018 long before he took over twitter. wilson walker was in court. >> reporter: those 30 minutes got right to the central question in this case. what was going on in the mind of elon musk? right away shareholder attorney nicholas poric questioned musk about his relationship with twitter, how he uses it for corporate messages and sparked controversy, namely the thailand cave rescue incident, and how close associates even asked musk to step away from tweeting, but musk pushed back. he says his tweets do not directly affect things like

changing stock prices and he described the years around 2018 as being "extremely painful" given how hard he was working at tesla. he almost seemed to convey a kind of physical exhaustion describing that time and hsaysre ying kithtoo ere ll this go well,a judge has already ruled that ald 4-20 twe musked he secured funding to make a tesla go private was false and misleading, but the plaintiffs need to convince the jury it was a tweet that cost them their money. that's why previous witnesses included angry tesla investors and a business expert who described the whole situation as highly unusual. >> so if we know musk wrote the tweet and the judge called it false and misleading, how could he possibly defend himself in court? we talked to a bay area criminal defense attorney, tony brass. >> i think his defense breaks down into two parts. there's the i thought it was true when

i said it. that is a valid legal defense and he's trying to say like well, what i say on twitter might be utter nonsense, but that's very difficult to accept. the real question is are people going to think he's just making up whatever he can to get out of criminal liability here? and the truth is is that being reckless does establish liability in this case. >> obviously a lot to follow and a lot to discuss. we will be keeping our eye on this trial and elon musk will take the stand once again come monday. a nudist club in castro vallhas a little problem on its hands. cole canyon roads, the private road that leads to the club, collapsed after the storm, left a big mess. it's the only way in and out of the nudist club that sits on 80 acres. we talked to them today. they're doing okay. they say they have food, water and

propane and clothes apparently, which is an important component to that story, but they say this is an expensive fix. >> there's a whole big area up there. we have a parking lot and an office, recreation hall and there's seven homes. so nobody's trapped, just can't drive out. nude when possible, clothed when practical. >> reporter: today's practical. >> today's very practical. nobody's nude except maybe in the hot tub. >> okay. so they have to fix the road themselves and as you can see from that video, it is a massive chasm that has opened up there. the road is private. so they're responsible for all the costs associated with this. they say they've been talking to contractors, but nothing really set so far in terms of fixing that problem that they have. >> how many people? >> i mean it's a really good thing they weren't out there fixing it naked because that would have been -- >> we couldn't have shown you the video. we could have, would have taken a while, blur out

start the day sunday. it's just going to filter the sunshine. it won't block it. then we are back to clear skies sunday night continuing into monday, full sunshine for the beginning of next week as temperatures return to near average which means mostly upper 50s with a few spots reaching up to around 60 degrees. the dry weather is going to continue a while. the six to ten-day outlook from the climate prediction center which takes us almost to the end of january still shows a significant chance of drier than normal conditions, in fact, near zero precipitation for the next ten days. it's what we need to recover from the recent stretch of incredibly wet weather, but eventually we would like some lighter showers to return and the eight to 14-day outlook from the climate prediction center shows a good chance of wetter than normal conditions to begin the month of february, not necessarily return of the atmospheric river parade, but still some signs that we aren't going to have a repeat of the two months of dry weather we had last year. right now clear skies and temperatures dropping off. it's 46 in san francisco, but otherwise mid- degrees and

mid-30s inland by tomorrow morning, a lot of spots around freezing, which is below average by 5 to 10 degrees, but not record setting and not that close. temperatures are going to reach down to around 40 degrees near the bay and along the coast. highs tomorrow, mid-50s along the coast, down the peninsula and around the south end of the bay, upper 50s in the santa clara valley including in san jose 58 degrees. a little cooler to start the day inland in the east bay, so a little cooler in the afternoon, low to mid-50s for highs with mid-50s in san francisco and oakland, mostly mid-50s north of the golden gate, some of the warmer spots in the upper 50s around santarosa, but everybody stays short of sixth one more day. more 60s appear on the map next week, even a few days of slightly above average temperatures by wednesday, thursday and ayan absolutely zero rain in the entire seven-day forecast and the weather does look good for

a chinese drum troupe, chinese calligrapher and a balloon artist and an appearance from a rabbit. it is the end of an era in the east bay. berkeley's last commercially-operated movie theater is about to close down. andrea nakano talked to people who say it feels like they're losing out on a lot more. >> reporter: this theater has been here 100 years, a familiar place where locals come to watch a movie. many say losing this theater would be like losing a part of berkeley. >> didn't really surprise me, to tell you the truth. this was the last one. it was a matter of time. >> reporter: james frederickson has been a frequent visitor of the shops, restaurants and theaters in downtown berkeley for the last 45 years. >> berkeley is not the berkeley that it was and i don't think it's going to get any more interesting. i think it's going to get a lot more boring. >> reporter: the regal theater location is slated to be one of 39 nationwide that will close its doors next month according

proposal to turn this building into a 17-story mixed use apartment building. the only thing that's expected to remain is the regal facade. cineworld has not responded to our request for a comment on this story. so we know
