the biden were not present. authorities also took possession of other material and handwritten notes. a special counsel has been appointed to investigate. now to the renewed battle over abortion rights. today, abortion proponents gathered in san francisco. this weekend marks six years since the roe versus wade decision gave americans the constitutional to abortion, a decision that was overturned last summer. >> reporter: abortion rights does remain at the forefront of our national debate here in washington, in the states, and ahead of the 2024 presidential race. does the push for abortion rights continue? >> yes. in question. it now moves more or less to the state capitals. >> reporter: franklin graham, son of the famed billy graham, was one of

thousands of activists that turned up for the march of life, arguing the end of roe is not the end of their fight. >> nothing's really changed. abortions are still happening every day. >> reporter: but the persistence republicans are at a crossroads. some like former president trump have blamed last year's election results on the abortion issue, being handled by republicans. >> i'll be joining some people at the march for life next week, and i've made it very clear. it may take us as long to restore the sanctity of life to the center of american law as it took us to overturn roe v wade. >> reporter: possible trump rivals are shaking their head at trump's assessment and tilting to the right. >> would you nudge governor desantis to take further action? >> i would nudge every governor to do what they can to back up their pro-life record. i think talking about situations and making statements is incredibly important but also

taking action and governing and bringing policies to protect life are more important. >> reporter: and the issue has sparked an informal policy standoff among those who might run for president. but many attending the march acknowledged the politics of this issue, long, highly charged, remain complicated. >> in order for the best ideas to come forward, you need to be willing to listen to each other, hear your opponents, understand what they're thinking, have empathy and compassion and come up with ideas together. >> reporter: 50 years after roe v wade, vice-president kamala harris will be in tallahassee, florida on sunday to deliver a major speech on abortion rights as democrats continue to push on this issue as well. >> bob, there's also news tonight on another subject at the white house. >> reporter: that's right. white house chief of staff ron klain has signalled to advisors and associated that he will leave his position in the coming

for a very messy monday commute for you in boston, new york city, all the way over to the capital district. and adriana, looking ahead to next week, there's another winter storm that's going to be taking aim at the lower 48. >> all right. molly mccolumn from the weather channel, thank you. the memphis police department has fired five officers following the death of tyree nichols this month. they found the officers violated department policies including the use of excessive force and failing to give aid after a traffic stop for reckless driving. nichols said he had trouble breathing. the 29-year-old was hospitalized and died three days later. his family says he was brutally beaten.a,he family of a man who died after being shocked with an lapd tazer has filed a $50 million claim for damages against the city of los angeles. the incident was captured on police body cam. >> reporter: good evening.

that $50 million claim is a precursor to a wrongful death or civil rights lawsuit unless the city of los angeles accepts liability. we must warn you, this video is upsetting. >> say his name. >> reporter: a call for answers and accountability. >> please, help me, please! >> reporter: 31-year-old kenan anderson died january 3rd, hours after a struggle with los angeles police. >> they're trying to kill me! >> reporter: he was tased six times in less than a minute. the mother of his 5-year-old son sharing the family's pain. >> having to hear him cry out for help the way he did and to watch him be hurt by the very people who are supposed to protect him is something i will never get over. >> reporter: police stopped anderson after a hit and run accident. the teacher from washington, d.c. had been visiting family. body cam video shows he initially complied but later ran away. >> please, please! >> relax!

>> reporter: a group of officers then struggled to restrain him, first using body weight, then tasing him multiple times. anderson died at a hospital hours later of cardiac arrest. >> it's unclear what role the physical struggle with the officers and the use of the tazer played in his unfortunate death. >> reporter: according to the department's toxicology report, anderson had cocaine and marijuana in his system. anderson was the cousin of patrice colors, a black lives matter cofounder. the city now has 45 days to respond to the claim. adriana. >> tania, thank you. there are new details about a fatal shooting at an indiana walmart. a store employee is being hailed as a hero for helping stop the gunman. the aftermath was caught on body cam. cbs's michael george joins us with all the details. >> reporter: good evening. some terrifying moments for

workers and customers inside that walmart this week, and now police are praising a walmart employee, heather moore, who they say escaped the active shooter, called 911, then came back to help a gunshot wound victim hide. we want to warn viewers this video is disturbing. officials say the loss of life could have been worse if not for that employee and law enforcement. body cam footage shows armed officers searching aisle by aisle for an active shooter inside a walmart in evansville, indiana. it all started thursday night. investigators say ex-walmart worker 25-year-old ronald mosley intentered a staff break room and shot an employee in the face. officers arrived within minutes of the first 911 call. >> as you can see, officers are running inside the store. they're not waiting, they're not trying to develop a plan, they're running straight into the store.

and that is how we train in an active shooter situation. >> reporter: and then -- police say the suspect repeatedly shot at officers. and they fired back. >> drop it! [ gunshots ] >> he's down! >> reporter: mosley was killed. no others were injured besides the wounded employee who's in stable condition. >> well, it certainly could have been worse. our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim who was injured. >> reporter: investigators say mosley was fired about eight months ago for assaulting coworkers. he pleaded guilty and was actually in court for a mental health hearing the very day of the shooting. police say they found a suicide note at his home. today in peru, authorities

ordered the closing of ma chew pea chew as anti-government protests spread across that country. protesters are demanding the resignation of the country's president. more than 40 people have been killed in clashes with security forces. it attracts more than a million visitors a year, although those numbers have been down since the pandemic. to israel where people protested against benjamin netanyahu's new far right government. the largest crowd was in tel aviv. it was one of the biggest protests against the israeli government in years. >> reporter: israelis have been taking to the streets in thousands to protest the country's new far right, ultra religious government. some say they were fighting for their futures. >> we care about our rights, womens rights and palestinian rights, homosexuality, everything. >> reporter: others fear the israel they know could become a thing of the past.

citizens >> reporter: including the cabinet, israel's new national security minister. he's a radical, ultra nationalist once convicted of organizing a terrorist organization. now he's in charge of the police. >> he has chanted "death to arabs" in the past. he's on camera urging palestinians to be shot. do you think this is a man who should hold a ministerial post? >> the man has made mistakes in the past. he says he's changed, and i believe him. >> reporter: what do you think the future holds given this new government? >> i'm not hopeful. i think it's going to be very violent. administration is taking a wait and see approach. secretary of state anthony blinken says it will be judged on its policies, not its personalities.

it's a major project by volunteers, parishioners, and decendents of those buried there. >> reporter: behind the sacred heart chapel in bowie, maryland, a long forgotten cemetery. the jesuits founded a church here and a plantation that kept people enslaved, including kevin porter's ancestors. >> this is where they lived. this is where they came to commune after laboring all day. >> reporter: as the catholic church acknowledges, this horror of its past, its archdiocese in washington recently brought in an anthropologist to map and document grave sites. as volunteers, including church members and some seventh and eighth generation decendents swept and raked away centuries of debris, they saw graves, stones, grave markers and indications of burials.

is it possible dozens of people were buried here? >> it's likely hundreds of peoples were buried here. >> reporter: they marked suspected sites with flags. with this clearing process complete, the church will spend months now grappling with how to properly mark and preserve what's really a tragic piece of the church's history. the church says the committee of decendents, experts and leaders will eventually determine how to mark and honor the cemetery. >> it's part of history, and it has been talked about but needs to be talked about more. >> reporter: other organizations and governments are seeking to do the same. one of them, the state of maryland has considered legislation ordering a formal review of burial places to determine where money is needed to find and preserve burial grounds of the enslaved african american experience. kevin porter hopes to see a memorial one day. >> it's important that we uncover them and honor them. this site is important to our family, it's important to american history. i think we need memorials telling those stories.
