people dead and n juat new year the suspected gunman, 72-year-old huu can tran, is dead after police found his body inside this van several miles from the shooting. >> danya bacchus is in monterey park with the very latest on the investigation. >> reporter: as monterey park mourns the mass shooting at a dance hall that left five men and five women dead on the scene, s.w.a.t. teams zeroed in on this white van about 30 miles south of the crime scene. authorities confirmed that the suspect is dead after he apparently shot and killed himself inside the van. >> during the search several pieces of evidence were found inside the van linking the suspect to both locations in monterey park and alhambra. >> reporter: earlier law enforcement said the gunman who opened fire at the star dance studio may have tried and fail to unleash more deadly violence at a second dance hall in nearby alhambra. >> this could have been much

worse. the weapon that we recovered at that second scene i'm describing as a magazine-fed semiautomatic assault pistol. >> reporter: investigators continue to search for a motive for this terrifying attack. authorities like the fbi, the sheriff's department and monterey park police remain at the scene of the shooting. this community about 60,000 east of los angeles is comprised mostly of people of asian descent. >> to hear about this was just absolutely shattering, especially in our peaceful community which i believe is so resilient and which appreciates its diversity. >> i'll never be able to feel safe here again. >> reporter: now instead of celebrating the chinese year of the rabbit, residents here are searching for answers. >> president biden said while there is still much we don't know about the motive in this senseless attack, we do know that many families are grieving tonight. we're praying their

loved ones will recover from their wounds, even as we continue searching for answers about the attack. we know how deeply it's impacted the aapi community. for his part, governor newsom called it a horrific and heartless act of gun violence on a night that should have been a joyful celebration. >> in san francisco mayor london breed, police and district attorney are all promising increased security at lunar new year's celebrations in the wake of the monterey park shooting. they were all out today at port smith square and while promising to keep everyone safe during this year's celebrations, they encouraged community members to stick together. >> i'm here today to tell you that we are going to make sure that we have a visible presence in the chinese community and all throughout san francisco in the coming weeks as we monitor what's happening. >> mayor breed echoed that message before leading a moment of silence honoring the lives taken away in monterey park. >> our hearts and our prayer goes out to the families and

the loved ones of those who were killed and those who were injured. >> district attorney brooke jenkins said we cannot become numb to these horrific acts of violence and work to restore our respect for each other and for humanity. the year of the rabbit stands for hope. we must remain resolute in our hope for a better society. >> reporter: as you can hear, fireworks have been going off all night long here in san francisco's chinatown as many people celebrated the lunar new year. they were also shaken by the senseless violence in monterey park. from outside chase center where lion dancers entertained the crowd before sunday's warriors game to the halftime performance featuring traditional dancers, thousands of people rang in the lunar new year with family and friends.

warriors fans received red envelopes at the door before watching the team take on the nets. some also had heavy hearts. >> my mom's from vietnam, so our family, we celebrated. we sell great tet and it's really unfortunate to hear what happened in monterey, especially in today where, you know, you want to get together and celebrate as communities. >> reporter: richmond resident kim woods and her son said they feel extremely safe at chase center because of tight security. >> we know that they have the screenings when you come in and checking. so we didn't think about it, but i'm sure the people that went to monterey park didn't think about that either. that's the unfortunate thing. >> reporter: warriors fans also enjoyed family friendly lunar new year activations at thrive city. we spotted plenty of officers watching over the celebration. >> my buddy over here who is not on camera was carrying a duffel bag. i could see them like looking, right? but i think the fact that, you know, there are police out there

makes me feel a lot safer. >> reporter: from mission bay to chinatown, crowds of people took part in traditions to mark the arrival of the year of the rabbit. people gathered on street corners to set off fireworks. others had lunar new year dinner like cal students jenny chen and her friend. >> and to just see like a mass shooting happened so close to where my family, where i grew up, is definitely scary to say the least. obviously there's a voice in the back of my head like hopefully nothing happens hopefully, you know. thank god, nothing has happened. in other news tonight, san francisco fire department crew rescued two people from the cliff from fort funston today. san francisco fire used a helicopter in the rescue efforts. everyone involved is okay. elon musk will be back on the witness stand in the

morning defending an old tweet amid the ongoing securities fraud trial. the class action lawsuit brought by tesla investors claims a false musk tweet from 2018 cost them their money. the tweet about funding and ownership of tesla has been proven false. the prosecution suggests the tweet is the reason for their losses while musk argues it doesn't have that much power. you probably got the idea football fans were excited in san francisco tonight. they took to the streets and to the bars across the city to celebrate the 49ers' third trip to the nfc championship game in four years. da lin spent the day at levi stadium today. here's how it went. >> reporter: 49ers fans extremely happy leaving levi's stadium. it was a very close game, but now it's on to the next round. a win on the field led to fireworks in the parking

lot. some 49ers fans blasting off illegal fireworks to celebrate the hard fought playoff victory. >> this is the best game i've ever been to as a 9ers fan. this was the most fun. it was exciting. it was exhilarating. >> reporter: before the celebratory dance, there was plenty of tailgating parties. they had deejays, bars and food. >> you guys close your eyes and feel the electricity in the air about this rivalry. >> reporter: charles davis says he's hated the cowboys ever since deion sanders in the '90s left the 49ers to join the cowboys. >> i can't stand the cowboys. i bought a cowboys hat and threw it down and stomped on it. >> reporter: he wanted to watch the game in person. >> the tickets were the most expensive i've ever had. i've never paid $500 for a ticket, but i did not want to miss this. i'm in standing room only, $500 to stand up. i don't even got a seat. >> reporter: as much as he

next week. >> he looked good in red. as for the action on the field, there's only one man we can turn to and that's vern glenn. he continues our coverage from levi's. >> reporter: the 49ers are advancing to the nfc championship for the third time in the last four seasons after defeating the dallas cowboys here at levi's stadium. the 49ers only scored one offensive touchdown the whole game. this two-yard run from christian mccaffery in the fourth quarter and despite the low score, the 9ers ran for 86 rushing yards in the second half to hold off dallas 19-12. it doesn't matter if it looked pretty. you just have to score more points than the other team. >> that's pretty cool to see the clock at zero and you see like the 9ers over the cowboys. that's pretty sweet in the playoffs. >> this was one we kind of knew it was going to be one of those grindy games. it may be cliche that any team that scores 19 points will say it doesn't have to be pretty, but it's true. we're in the playoffs playing

against the best teams in the league. >> reporter: so to reset, the 49ers will head to philadelphia to play the eagles next sunday for a spot in super bowl lvii. the odds are favoring the eagles by 2 1/2 points. that will do it from the last home game at levi's stadium. >> thanks, vern. still ahead on cbs news bay area, as we mark 50 years since the roe v. wade decision, lawmakers on both sides rally their supporters and vow to keep the fight going. then the reunion between san francisco first responders and the family of a toddler who was accidentally exposed to fentanyl. and in the first alert forecast, the camera on top of the salesforce tower is shaking around a bit. i don't know if it's coming across there. we've still got 25-mile an hour winds through the valley tonight and a wind advisory that doesn't expire till tomorrow. we'll talk about the impacts from that in terms of the risks to downed trees and then a warm-up

by two separate mudslides last week. the train is expected to run tomorrow. the union pacific will be out ahead of the ace trains inspecting the tracks. the huge sinkhole is still on highway 92, but after days of being closed, caltrans found a way to steer traffic around it. the sinkhole is near the intersection of highway 92 and skyline boulevard. caltrans says it is 15 feet wide and ten feet deep. if you were near the coast today, you likely noticed the king tides. the highest projected tides of the year peaked over seven feet today. ocean beach was bustling under the sun while certain beach hazard statements in the area advised people to stay out of the water. we haven't seen the worst of these king tides yet, right, darren? >> one more day. this afternoon and evening the beach hazard statement was allowed to expire and the national weather service issued another one tomorrow afternoon into tuesday. so there's more wave

energy coming our way. first i think it's the wind advisory that's probably going to be the most impactful, certainly just in terms of a widespread issue. you probably noticed the wind tonight is a lot stronger up in the mountains getting gusts 40 to 50 miles an hour across the peaks. it will stay that way overnight. towards tomorrow you can still see by 2:00 it's gusting in the north bay mountains. the wind advisory with this will be allowed to expire at 7 a.m. tomorrow. that means we have to get through tonight with the risk of perhaps some downed trees across the bay area. that is still a concern. the ground is still fairly saturated and the trees are still vulnerable for after two years of intense drought. how do we get winds without the rain this time? the wind always came along with the storms the first two weeks of january. this time the storm missed up. look what happened over the last 24s. the system came in and road up and over

the top of california and brought one of those sliders and we feel it pass by. these winds are ming from the northeast. those are the offshore winds because they're going from the land offshore. so they'll get better by tomorrow. here's the beach hazard statement, stays in effect from monday afternoon until tuesday. it was nice to have a few hours today where we were allowed to have one of those down and not be issued, but there's still a lot of wave energy in the pacific coming our way and the final day here as we look at the coastal flood advisory, the time is monday at noon. that's when we'll have the next high tide for king tides. so it's really that probably helps in terms of what can i do with this information? noon is when we'd be the most vulnerable for the low lying coastal areas to have some inundation from high tide. morning is going to be cold tomorrow, but not as bad as the past few days. the last two ntinuee trend. nobody ten a freezes tomorrow morning, b sti

in thbay vaeynd south bay, but are a lot more low 40s. daytime highs tomorrow are great. we'll be in the low 60s. that starts a warming trend actually you'll see in the seven-day forecast. we'll be in the mid-60s for some of our warmer locations by wednesday. just to check in on the big picture on the storm track, we're still shielded by a blocking ridge of high pressure. look at the big area where there's nothing. the storms are all out here. we can see that ridge in place. that will hold for the next seven days. once we get towards the last day or two of january into february 1st , there are signs that that ridge will break down and we maybe could start thinking about the possibility of rain coming back early february, but much more on the details as we get closer. we need more time. in the next seven days it's not going to rain and it will warm up, daytime highs in the mid-60s in the north bay valleys by wednesday and thursday. back over to you. >> thanks, darren. coming up, we were there when san francisco parent were

and saved a toddler who had accidentally overdosed on fentanyl. >> and today the family got to reunite with those first responders who stepped in to save their child. >> devin fehely has the story. >> by the time i arrived, you know, all i saw was he was laying flat on his back. they had a breathing apparatus on his face assisting him with breathing. apparently he was completely blue. >> reporter: ivan said he will never forget the nightmar ish day he nearly lost his son to a fentanyl overdose and he will be eternally grateful to the firefighters and paramedics who saved his son's life. >> they knew all the signs and decided to administer narcan and he just popped back almost instantly after that. >> reporter: the boy's recovery was just as quick as the onset of his symptoms. a simple day at the park with his nanny and twin brother that nearly went tragically astray

after he stopped breathing and turned blue. the paramedics say they had to ignore the patient's age and allow themselves to be the evidence of their eyes. >> somebody who wasn't responsive and stopped breathing was very characteristic of a possible opioid overdose and to be frank, this isn't my first pediatric opioid overdose. >> reporter: the mystery was exactly how senna was exposed, but he was administered narcan his condition improved almost in a heartbeat. >> within ten seconds he started breathing, opened his eyes, looked right at me, kind of scanned the back of the ambulance and then started crying. >> reporter: the twins who just turned 1 may never truly know how close they came to tragedy. they visited the firehouse and their heroes this afternoon, but their parents know that a little boy blue and not breathing was pulled from the brink and because of that, will live to celebrate many more birthdays. >> we're just super thankful that they knew what to do in

by authorities. protesters threw rocks, lit fireworks, police cars, in fact, set on fire. this all began during an earlier protest about a police facility being built in a wooded area just outside of atlanta. officials say the 26-year-old environmental activist shot and wounded a state trooper during those protests. authorities fired back in self-defense with. protesters say they have their doubt about that story. police say they will pursue the strictest charges they can for people responsible for the destruction this weekend. >> it doesn't take a rocket scientist or an attorney to tell you that breaking windows and setting fire is not protest. that is terrorism. they will be charged accordingly. >> police say six people have been arrested. the mayor said many of them are not from the area. today marks 50 years since the u.s. supreme court ruled in roe versus wade, about the after it was overturned last year, the fight of reproductive rights is at the forefront of people's minds. pro choice

marches took place across the country as thousands came out to have their voices heard, but that will be next to impossible to do in the newly republican-controlled house. democrats think the abortion issue helped them have a better than expected outcome in last year's midterms and while some republicans acknowledge that it cost them at it the ballot box, they're facing mounting pressure from their base to do more to restrict abortion. >> even though i am pro life, i'm at least willing to have some concessions, find that middle ground because the vast majority of people i represent, that's what they're asking for. >> i think we just need to get the word out that there's alternatives to doing that. >> meanwhile in florida today, vice president harris said the biden administration is waiting on congress and will do what they can to insure women have access to healthcare they need. >> the right of every woman in every state in this country to make decisions about her own
