tonight. here outside of this dance studio, people continue to pay their respects. candles and flowers were left outside the star dance studio in monterey park, california on monday as a memorial to the victims of this weekend's mass shooting. a devastating, icnt r ou mm in disbelief. >> reporter: the shots rang out as a group of mostly asian american seniors is celebrated the lunar new year saturday night. one victim spent many years going to the dance studio. it's what she loved to do. they're starting the lunar new year broken. >> it was supposed to be a happy, nice day for everyone to enjoy. >> it cast a shadow over celebrations in this predominantly asian american community. the city of monterey park has set up a crisis center for anyone affected by the tragedy. the suspect was

identified as a 72-year-old huu can tran. about a half hour after the first shooting, he entered another dance hall , three miles away. a man working there says he wrestled the gun away from the suspect, who fled in a white van. law enforcement event the van and the sheriff says the suspect took his own life as a s.w.a.t. team moved in. >> several pieces of evidence were found inside the van, linking the suspect to both locations. >> investigators searched the suspects home as they tried to determine the motive behind the massacre. at this hour, several people are still in the hospital. of the patients, three of them are at the l.a. county usc medical center. one of them is in serious condition. the other two are recovering. >> i grew up not far from that area. i remember it being a very tight knit, safe community. not something like this expected to happen there. how is the community responding to all of this? >> reporter: it is one of those things where you never expect it to happen in your community

wherever you are. people are really in disbelief, though. as you said, it's a quiet, small, tight knit community. we are learning that many of the people who came to the dance studio did so on a regular basis. they were there for a moment of celebration. celebrating and kicking off the new year together in a wonderful way, but unfortunately, people are now starting off the year grieving together. instead of celebrating. >> just an unspeakable tragedy. thank you so believes in the bay area are stepping up security for lunar new year celebrations. the festivities started with a moment of silence for the monterey park shooting victims. police said the increase of patrols would extend past the weekend's activities. >> we will make sure that we have a visible presence in the chinese community and all throughout san francisco in the coming weeks as we monitor what is happening. we will also make

sure we will increase our presence at the. with any public gathering. we will be there. >> the parade and street fair will take place february 4th and 5th. we will bring you updates on the shooting on air on cbs news bay area and online at kpix.com. oakland police chief leronne armstrong says he deserves to be reinstated immediately. mayor sheng thao put him on paid leave after eight monitor found that he failed to hold a sergeant accountable for misconduct. called the report accurate and unfair. the monitor, robert warshaw, is said to be manufacturing a crisis for his own interests. >> this, to me, is clearly a last ditch effort to destroy the credibility of me and this department and to make the community believe that opd is

involved in some shady business. that's not what this is. >> does not blame the mayor for putting him on paid leave. he was simply telling warshaw's recommendation. she has done that said if she will fire the chief, but stands five her decision to put him on paid leave. >> it's not to be punitive. it's not a disciplinary action to leronne armstrong. it's an opportunity to fully review the findings of the reports and let our oversight and the place to do. supporters of armstrong are coming out to defend him. both city councilmember and former councilmember, annette michael laney. not the unstrung. he was appointed back in 2010 and given additional

let's go back to our top story of the deadly master shooting in southern california. a celebration of mostly asian american seniors. we know from full stigmas during the pandemic the targeted acts of hate, the asian american community has dealt with a lot from the mental health standpoint especially over the past few years. joining me now is dr. michael stanton. thank you so much for joining us. can you tell us more about the acts of violence that we saw in monterey park and in general, for that matter? >> these types of incidents can be really devastating to a community. in particular, people might be angry at the perpetrator, they might be grieving. they might be really anxious about thinking, you know, will this happen to me? lots and lots happening at the same time. thoughts about your loved ones who could have been

there at the time of the shooting. you could have been there. a lot of complex emotions. going through a lot of our minds at the moment as we watch the news cast. >> i can imagine rage, fear, and overwhelming sadness, even if you did not know the individuals who were killed. what steps can people take to cope? especially when violence like this is more common or more exposed now. >> yeah. it's important to remember that yes, we need to be cautious. at the same time, we don't want that to overrule all of our senses. we don't need to be obsessive about this. really, when we are thinking , we really want to let ourselves grieve and process the grief and anger. that is completely normal. at the same time, we need to think

about self-care. what we need to do to take care of ourselves. it might be limiting the kind of coverage you are watching. it might be taking a breather. mindfulness. certainly, needing to think about diet. eating healthy. very, very helpful at these times. >> thank you so much. great advice there. other news around the bay, elon musk says he stands by his 2018 tweets. he secured funding to take the company private. the tweet misled investors and cost them tens of millions of dollars. today was his second down the stand in san francisco. he told the federal court he had a handshake agreement with saudi arabia and officials to secure the funding. the rest would have been covered by space x shares.

downslope wind coming off of those mountains and they help to warm the temperatures up. look at the difference from 24 hours ago. you see the bull's-eye there. deep shade of orange. 8 degrees warmer than yesterday in santa rosa. you are pretty much exactly where you were yesterday at this time. still windy but not directly downslope of those imposing northbay mountains. you see where the colors of the brightest up here. that is where the wind is coming in the strongest right now. we will see this get better. the wind advisory is expired as of this morning. the idea of an offshore wind is staying with us for the next few days. watch the time up here and watch the pattern. we are going to stay in this offshore wind scenario through at least thursday. we will feel the gusts pick up again at the higher elevations over the next few days. might even be breezy for the rest of us, as well. there is a lot of energy coming out of the

pacific. hazard statement going to affect at 4:00 this very careful if you are going to be on any of our beaches . waves are the primary concern there. in terms of any rain coming back our way, if we look at the big picture, you can see the storms are almost getting blocked out here. one of them is going to try to do it on sunday. right there. sunday afternoon. a little bit of snow. maybe a light dusting. light dusting and snow from the sierra has to go around a long way. keep doing that one for a while. we will feel the offshore winds. maybe by early february, that will start to change. we will go into this more as we get closer. daytime highs on tuesday will be like today. 60s for most of us. the offshore wind should not be so
