there has to be a change. >> now yet another mass shooting, this time killing seven people here in the bay area. a gunman opens fire at two mushroom farms. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello. i'm sara donchey. tonight the nation's latest mass shooting happened right here in the bay area. seven people are dead. one person is in the hospital tonight after shootings at two mushroom farms in half moon bay. the gunman turned himself in. deputies say there is no longer a threat to the community. just this weekend 11 people were killed in another mass shooting down in southern california. here is

what we know about the shootings in the bay area. 67-year-old half moon bay resident chunli zhao is in custody tonight. the sheriff believes he may have been a worker at one of the farms. this didn't end in a pursuit or standoff. it ended when the suspect drove himself to the sheriff's department to a substation. we caught the arrest on camera. after they arrested him, sheriff's deputies spent hours combing through his car. they say they found a semiautomatic weapon inside. today's shooting is the deadliest in the bay area since san jose's vta shooting in 2021. the vta employee opened fire at a railyard killing nine people before turning the gun on himself. we have live team coverage tonight with crews fanned out across half moon bay in san mateo county. laura toms spent all evening in half moon bay and is live with more on how all this happened today.

lauren? >> reporter: the scene at the sheriff's substation in half moon bay is quiet after hours of investigation which is, of course, ongoing. the parking lot behind me is where the subject was apprehended and taken into custody. our photojournalist jim flanagan caught that moment. this afternoon zhao is believed to have shot and killed seven people and critically wounded one more person. we're told all the victims are adults. as of tonight, authorities do not have a motive for today's attacks at local mushroom farms here in half moon bay, but here is what we do know. zhao is a half moon bay resident at 67 years old and is believed to have been employed at one of these mushroom farms. authorities tell us that roughly two hours after the first shooting took place, he arrived at this parking lot at the san mateo county substation where he was recognized by deputies who also seized the semiautomatic handgun. that weapon we're told is believed to be the only weapon involved

in this incident. earlier we spoke with a woman who arrived at the substation to get answers on today's tragic events and happened to pull up right as the suspect was being taken down, a moment she describes as calm but authoritative. >> the reason i came down here tonight is because i am part of the agricultural and food systems community here in town and like the rest of the nation is under a lot of pressure, these folks are under an intense amount of stress in their everyday lives coming from a multitude of directions and it results in incidents like this. >> reporter: here in half moon bay, this is a community with a large agricultural and fishing community. they were rocked just weeks ago by the recent storms across their infrastructure and farms. earlier in a press conference we heard an emotional plea for aid from local officials. >> our hearts are broken. we

are deeply grateful for law enforcement, for their work this evening, but in the end there are simply too many guns in this country. >> this is something we get to watch on the news, never think that it's going to come and hit home. today we're the news. our community has been affected. >> reporter: just about an hour ago a tow truck came to pick up the suspect's car and transport it to the san mateo county crime lab. that maroon lexus suv right there. the deputies appear to have obtained a search warrant and spent hours combing the vehicle. at this hour authorities are desperately trying to get as much information as possible from the suspect as to why they would carry out this tragic mass shooting here in half moon bay. we'll keep you updated with any developments we get. >> lauren, thank you. i'm sure we'll learn that in the coming

days and weeks. certainly we appreciate your work. the tragedy, of course, in all this is there are families in half moon bay and beyond who haven't heard from their loved ones or have gotten unimaginable news tonight. the sheriff's office opened a family reunification center at ides hall on main street. betty yu is live there talking to people, including people who really worry that their loved ones may have been killed. betty? >> reporter: that's right, sara. the san mateo county sheriff's office have kept media at a distance from the reunification center behind me, but i did speak with one woman over the phone. she was here earlier and she confirmed that her partner was among the victims. elisa ortega spent the afternoon anxious and distraught trying to get in touch with her partner who worked as a manager at a mushroom farm just off highway 1. >> when is the last time you heard from him? >> the morning, in the morning

when he go to work is the last time i hear from him and pretty much. >> reporter: you think he's in there? >> yes. >> reporter: her worst nightmare became a reality hours later. she told me that the love of her life, martin martinez, was shot inside the mushroom farm and his co-worker witnessed the crime. loved ones of victims and those living in the active crime scene area gathered at the family reunification center on main street monday night. coastal residents and volunteers from the nonprofit alice which responds to natural disasters and emergencies answered the community's call for help. >> i walked into my boss' office at 4:00 and i said, "there's four people dead in my town. i have to go," and i mean the farmworkers on the coast have a rough life as it is and this is just -- it's terrible. >> reporter: kate shea and

lizette diaz helped bring blankets, warm meals and snacks to those affected by the mass shooting. they started off the year volunteering to help storm victims who are still flooded out of their homes p. >> it's been a rocky road the past couple of weeks. i mean the community comes out when we reach out. the community does come to help. >> reporter: lizette is still trying to process the sudden burst of violence in her quiet agricultural town. >> i was shocked. i mean i never would have thought something like this would happen in a small, close community. we're all very close. we all know each other. we know our neighbors. we know the people who work within our community. it was heartbreaking. >> reporter: we are still waiting for all of the victims to betifiedy the coroner. >> betty, that woman who shared the story about her husband is just so incredibly devastating. i can't evimagine how she's feeling now. what did you learn about the people that work on

this farm? >> reporter: i spoke with a delivery driver who works at one of those farms and he says that it's mostly a mix of chinese and mexican farmworkers. he also mentioned that he left that site just off highway 1 today around 10 a.m. he didn't notice anything unusual about the work site and, of course, hours later all of that changed. >> betty, just a horrible, horrible situation for so many people. thank you for your reporting. fbi officers in san francisco are helping the san mateo county sheriff's department now with the investigation. deputies, however, are taking the lead. governor gavin newsom who is also dealing with fallout from another mass shooting down in southern california tweeted, "at the hospital meeting with victims of a mass shooting when i get pulled away to be briefed about another shooting, this time in half moon bay, tragedy upon tragedy." the first tragedy is the mass shooting at a lunar new year celebration in

monterey park saturday morning. there was a candlelight vigil tonight for the victims there. there is still a lot to learn about what happened and why. our max darrow is in monterey park tonight for us and he has the story. >> reporter: tonight community members and leaders came together for a candlelight vigil to honor the 11 people killed in the mass shooting at a dance studio in monterey park, california. meantime the investigation is still underway. the community of monterey park, california, is searching for answers after a shooting massacre during a lunar new year celebration. >> what drove a madman to do this, we don't know, but we intend to find out. >> reporter: police say 72-year-old huu can tran used a semiautomatic pistol equipped with a large capacity magazine to attack the star dance studio. >> investigators recovered a total of 42 shell casings. >> reporter: sheriff's deputies searched his home in a gated senior community about an hour away. >> i thought he was a nice guy. >> reporter: resident bill

perry said tran was quiet and unsuspecting. >> he was not very outgoing except on the dance floor. that's who he was. >> reporter: this is america's 33rd mass shooting this month. those killed ranged in age from their 50s to their 70s. >> he enjoyed her last dance, even though it was her last dance. >> reporter: 65-year-old my my nhan was killed in her car shortly after leaving the ballroom. fonda kwon is her niece. >> what if we did lunar new year dinner and she might have not gone? >> reporter: after the shooting tran went to a second dance hall. 26-year-old brandon sei wrestled the gun away from him. he told abc's "good morning america" he thought he was going to die. >> something e. i realized i needed to get the weapon away from him. >> reporter: tran got away, but police say about 12 hours later he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound as officers closed in. according to the sheriff, tran had items

at his house that led investigators to believe he was manufacturing homemade firearm suppressors, but at this point investigators do not have any information surrounding a motive for the shooting. still ahead tonight, shocking what happened in half moon bay, but it wasn't the only deadly mass shooting that happened this evening in the bay area. oakland's police chief not going quietly, what he had to say about the controversy that landed him on administrative leave. >> that i should be the chief of police. i should remain in my position and i did nothing wrong. temperatures reached the upper 50s and low of 60s for most of us today, but santa rosa up to 71 degrees than

we are continuing our coverage on the deadly shooting in half moon bay. a suspect is in custody after seven people were killed at two mushroom farms. the big question is why? we don't know what the motive was. officers are still interviewing the suspect. also tonight eight people were shot in oakland. one of them died according to oakland police. it happened at a gas station at seminary and macarthur after 7:00 this evening. police found shell casings when they got there but no victims. they say people had either gone themselves or were taken to several local hospitals. police have not said anything about a possible suspect or what led up to that shooting. >> we're asking anyone that may have witnessed this incident, that may have information or video pertaining to this shooting to please contact our department. paul joining us now with a look at our forecast. we really

haven't seen much in the way of rain. >> we haven't. >> it's been a nice break. >> fifth dry day in a row and at least another dry days to go in this dry stretch of weather which is what we needed. at least the weather isn't causing any additional issues this evening for us, clear skies, a little breezy today. those wind won't be as much of a factor tomorrow, but occasional bursts of offshore wind will be with us the rest of the week as high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere, just a hill of air, builds closer to the west coast and squeezes the atmosphere and produces stronger wind gusts. let's track those gusts. it's not going to be as blustery tomorrow. the strongest gust is generally in the 10 to 15-mile an hour range. wednesday we'll see gusts over 20 miles an hour, but the strongest winds will likely arrive before sunrise thursday when we'll have 30 to 35-mile-per-hour gusts especially in the north bay. offshore winds will allow temperatures to warm to the

upper 60s with some spots likely to get to around 70 degrees. there is no rain in sight the next several days, but there's a hint of maybe a bit more unsettled pattern trying to shape up by sunday into monday of next week. these are very low rain chances in the 10 to 20% range, looks more likely according to the latest and long range data that we get back into a more unsettled pattern early february, a week from wednesday. the dry stretch of weather will continue for a while. temperatures now dropping off, down to 42 degrees in santa rosa, one spot clinging to 50, downtown san francisco, 40 in livermore, inland dropping to the mid- to upper 30s, mostly low to mid-40s along the bay and around the coast. tuesday temperatures will be near or slightly above average, but everybody within about 3 degrees on either side of what's normal for this time of year, around 60 around the bay with temperatures inland a mix of upper 50s and low 60s. some of the warmest spots, the

downslope winds helping to warm up the north bay into the mid-60s around santa rosa. the warmest days will settle in for wednesday, thursday and friday with temperatures retreating to closer to normal heading into the weekend. we'll add some additional cloud cover to the forecast for saturday and sunday, but at this point the odds of those clouds actually squeezing out any showers over the bay area remain lower than 20%, so no raindrops in the forecast at this point. it's something we'll keep an eye on, eventually another shower chance heads our way but not the rest of this week it doesn't look like. straight ahead in sports, doesn't this kind of say it all? 49ers, they never played a playoff game in philadelphia. well, that's about to change, slight underdogs, just as the aches about to fade, another test of physicality, stakes even higher. also tonight, the story that's dominated much of the day, seven people dead and fa

the city of oakland got a big shock last week when it's new mayor sheng thao abruptly placed the police chief on administrative leave. it stemmed from a report that said

. armstrong said he should be put back on the job immediately. >> reporter: a court monitor was appointed to oversee the department and now the chief said he is being smeared as a way to protect the monitor's job. on thursday oakland mayor sheng thao placed they've armstrong on paid leave pending an investigation. >> that's exactly what it is. it's not meant to be punitive. >> reporter: but at a press conference today armstrong made it clear that's not how on he sees it. >> i know i did nothing wrong. for me to have to fight to remain chief of police is unfair to me and the citizens. >> reporter: robert warshaw accuses arm strong of not holding an officer accountable for covering up a collision with a parked car and a second incident of the officer allegedly discharging his gun

in an elevator. armstrong said he felt he handled the collision case appropriately and that the gun discharge case was tape by him from warshaw before it could be investigated. >> these officers are human beings. people are going to make mistakes and i think i have a proven track record of holding people accountable. this department has changed. this department is not engaged in misconduct and this department does have the ability to investigate itself. >> reporter: armstrong does have strong community support including council member noel gal love gallo who made an appearance at the press conference. he believes warshaw is looking for things to criticize to keep his job going. >> you have warshaw that shows up once a month, creates a report to stay employed and oakland continues to pay that heavy price. >> reporter: but cat brooks who is an outspoken critic of the

tonight so many of us in the bay area feeling shocked and disturbed over yet another mass shooting, the second one in three days here in california. here's what we know about this. seven people are dead. one person is critically injured in this mass shooting in half moon bay. before 3:00 this afternoon a man opened fire at two mushroom farms. one was near highway 92 and another near half moon bay city limits. this evening the only surviving victim was flown to stanford medical center with life threatening injuries. a 67-year-old half moon bay resident chunli zhao is in custody tonight. the san mateo county sheriff believes he may have been a worker at one of those farms. this didn't end in a pursuit or standoff. the suspect drove himself to the sheriff's department to a substation. we caught deputies taking him into custody. >> they had their guns drawn. they approached from behind the car pretty tight formation and got up to the car and were

probably a few feet behind it, six feet behind it or so, and asked him to get out, took several asks. then he got out of the car and eventually he was taken down to the ground by them. >> after deputies arrested the man, they spent hours combing through his car and found a semiautomatic weapon inside. deputies are trying to figure out a motive. we don't know the names of the victims. their families are being notified. there is a reunification center opened because they aren't allowed to go home tonight. this saturday 11 people were killed in another mass shooting in monterey park in l.a. county. we'll bring you the latest developments on our website, kpix.com, but for now deputies are interviewing that suspect. we hope to learn more information, perhaps tomorrow and certainly in the next few days as they progress with their investigation. thank you so much for watching!
