new details about the shooting in half moon bay. what we know about the suspect and victim's. that afternoon, everybody. i am reed cowan. governor gavin newsom is in half moon bay right now after seven people were killed and at two agricultural businesses there. ryan yamamoto is live with the very latest and what is the mood there? >> reporter: as you can imagine, the mood is very sad and this is a community in morning. a lot of questions. out to the portuguese center here at half moon bay. we are now awaiting the arrival of governor gavin newsom who landed here in half moon bay at around 2:00 , meeting with first responders and members of the families victims. here is what we know so far. as you mentioned, seven people were shot and killed. five men, two women. another shooting victim is now being treated at stanford medical center. that suspect, chunli zhao, will be charged with seven counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder. we are told that he used to work at one of farms an also used work at another mushroom farm. investigators

are calling this a case of workplace violence. let me give you an idea of what we are looking at right now. you can see a large gaggle of reporters. these are national news people, as they are once again awaiting for the arrival of gavin newsom. in the meantime, jocelyn moran has more on this investigation. >> reporter: we know the suspect purchased a gun illegally. san mateo county sheriff has not yet provided identities of the victims. >> the only known connection between victims and the suspect is that they may have been coworkers. the coroner's office is still working on identification of the victims and notification of next of kin. >> we saw today families are still looking for answers. we were actually at that sheriff substation here in half moon bay. we noticed a man looking for answers. he spoke with us and he tells us the last time he heard from his ex-wife was about 3:50 p.m. yesterday. she called him asking him to pick

up the kids. did not provide many answers. he has called her but has not been able to get a hold of her. his kids are asking for their mom and he is just trying to find answers. >> [ speaking non-english ] >> reporter: they also told us is has been frustrating not being able to get answers. he wants to get answers for his kids, as well. he also mentioned the farmworker community. everybody knows each other. maybe not personally but they know each other by face. this is something that has very much shaken the community. >> we want to thank jocelyn moran with that report. we want to report that the man jocelyn spoke to has been told his ex-wife is safe and he has

spoken to her. in the meantime, we are awaiting the arrival of governor newsom outside the portuguese center in half moon bay. i want to show you this moment of humanity as we are all standing out here and gathering. we saw this woman and she cannot to the fence line, talking to the authorities and law enforcement holding a pot of yellow flowers. she wanted to pay her respect to the seven victims of this mess shooting here in half moon bay. her name is connie cunningham, who drove all the way from cupertino. we all sat in silence as we watched her make her way up to the steps, lay down those flowers, and it just kind of give a little bit of a prayer until she backed away. i did have a chance to speak to connie. this is what she had to say. >> they are just working, living their lives, raising their children. and they were murdered. and that is the end of their lives, the end of their stories. for many, many people. for them, it's the end of their lives. and their families have to pick up and

move on. >> i have to admit it was a bright moment on a very sad day here in half moon bay, as mentioned before. we are standing outside the portuguese center waiting for the arrival of governor gavin newsom. he arrived at 2:00 meeting with first responders, community members, and of course, the victims' family members who are sitting in the building behind me. the reunification center behind me. let me give you an idea of what we are looking out once again. you see the large group of reporters standing there with cameras and microphones waiting for the arrival of governor gavin newsom. it has been a whirlwind tour for the governor. of course, three days ago, he was in monterey park after a shooting there. 10 victims in that mass shooting. in half moon bay, seven victims. two mass shootings in the last three days in the great of california. we are waiting for comments from governor gavin newsom. we will bring it to you right here on kpix 5. back to

you. >> we are glad you brought us the picture of humanity that played out. the grief is real. the trauma is real. and the need to do something with it during th you at home are likel feeling it and if you see connie, please r doing that on the behalf of all of us who cannot make it. thank you, ryan yamamoto, as well, field anchoring from the side of that tragedy. this came just two days after a gunman ki ople new year at a dance studio in monterey park, los angeles county. max joins us live there with what we are learning about the victims. it is just surreal to think that we have got two mass shootings, two huge tragedies, just two days apart. >> just a matter of hours here in los angeles county. obviously, this is the first one that happened. the l.a. county coroner has identified all 11 victims killed in the mass shooting at that dance

studio as they were celebrating the lunar new year. there is a growing memorial behind us that has been growing ever since last night and all of the people who were killed in the shooting, they ranged in age from their 50s to 70s. we are learning more about the victims this afternoon. 68-year-old valentino aloe vera. his family said he loved people and his community and was the life of any party. judeo owner ming lehmann. and mei mei , his family said she loved to dance, also died. >> she got in the car with her partner and she was backing up. she stopped when she saw a person and that's when the shooter went to her side of the window and shot her. >> so many questions to be answered. investigators are trying to determine why exactly this elderly asian suspect

targeted people at the dance studio. police tell us he took his own life as they approached a van allers -- hours after the killing. an 80 mile drive from where we were. there, they have found hundreds of rounds of ammunition as well as the rifle. after leaving the first dance studio where people were killed in the shooting, he went to another dance hall in alhambra. a 20 or 30 minute drive from here. thankfully, the owner, the son of the studio, his name was brandon, was able to wrestle the gun away from the shooter. so many things happening in monterey park here in southern california. >> you've been in the community. we see the outpouring. tell us what you are seeing in the community. ryan yamamoto appear in the half moon bay tragedy. able to show as a person who was responding. what is the community there doing?

>> it's one of those things where you never expect this to happen in your community. but we know in some incredibly tragic times that is sometimes when you get these wonderful shows of strength. there is a community vigil in city hall last night where people who did not know the vic comes or know anyone involved showed up as we spoke with a woman who grew up in monterey park and felt like she needed to come stand strong with her neighbors. a show of support here and across the country for people to know what a strong community this is in monterey park. we've seen people pray and to share flowers and candles. there are hard crossers here at this memorial at city hall. people have been sending them with the victims names on them. people supported one another and cared for each other in these tough times. they will honor the 11 victims and all of the people who survived. >> thank you so much for that

update and another tragedy here. so many people are now wondering about solutions. president joe biden started by offering condolences after the deadly shooting and calls for democrats to do what they can to pass and assault weapons ban. recently reintroduced, by the way, by senator dianne feinstein so that the president can sign it into law. >> just got back spending time with gavin newsom after the floods and devastation that occurred. on top of that, we see what has happened in california. and what has happened to the asian american community has been devastating. the vice president has gone out. i've been talking with gavin newsom, judy chu, an issue. we are working out a number of things that we can. >> you heard about the president talk about time with governor gavin newsom. we want to remind you as soon as the governor steps to the podium to talk to that group of reporters

that you sigh ryan yamamoto highlight in his lab report emma we will bring it to you. meanwhile, let's come closer to home. new details about a mass shooting in oakland last night. police say it all began during the filming of a music video read unfolded in the gas station on seminary and macarthur. police say up to 50 people were there before the shots rang out. they say multiple shooters were involved. five people were shot at, including an 18-year-old man who died. six others who were injured. at this point on this case, one of many now, police believe it was gang related. >> we need the national leaders who block sensible action on withevery single structiothin day in our communities. and act. >> still no word about the suspect involved in the case, but we are watching all of them. we will bring you updates on these recent mass shootings.

the counitd be at the centers at different job locations. basically at the presence of the crime scenes. we had them here. mental health counseling available to them, for them. and something beautiful happened while the mental health counseling was taking place. while that reunification was taking place. we saw the strength of half moon bay rise.

>> one of our brand-new colleague and family members. diane. >> first of all, thank you all for being here today. i want to thank our governor who has put in a long two days. i appreciate your delegation being here. up until yesterday, we were to be one of those fortunate communities that was not a part of the exclusive club that had a mass shooting. we are now a part of that club and what worries me is that the club is not so exclusive anymore. this community, our hearts are broken. i will tell you one thing , we are resilient. our hearts will mend and we will

continue to fight the fight in california against gun violence and indeed in the nation. i think you all for being here. we are going to be on the mend. it is not a club i can say i'm glad we're in by any stretch of the imagination. with that, i will turn it over to the assembly member. >> thank you. my name is mark berman. i represent the 23rd assembly district in the california state assembly. i want to welcome everybody to the favorite part of my district, which is half moon bay. for those who have not been here before, don't know a lot about it, it is as close to small-town america as we get in the bay area. 30 miles south from san francisco . 30 miles west of silicon valley. when you get here, you feel like you are 1 million miles away from all those problems and yesterday those problems came crashing down. on the sense of peace and tranquility on the bay and the co-side, it was destroyed by senseless death.

senseless shootings that should not have happened. we got workplace disagreements all over the world. the monterey park shooting, we have relationship disagreements all over the world. but it's only in the united states where far too often, those disagreements and in mass shootings. we have done a lot in california to try to reduce gun violence. we've been successful but there is clearly more that we need to do. the state is going to do everything we can. half moon bay is strong. such a tightknit community where everybody looks out for each other. i am grateful to the sheriff. san mateo county is one of the best run in the state and already deploying resources for those who need it and we will continue to deploy to all community members impacted. i want to thank all community members for being here today. he does not want to be here
