now at 11:00, half-moon bay reeling from a mass shooting impacting a community that is often marginalized. what we are learning tonight about the man accused of carrying out a

violent rampage. >> from kpix5, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> i'm sara donchey. people in half-moon bay are leaning on each other for support. there e vi th ecial church service shoot and we are learning disturbing things about the man accused of killing his own coworkers. it was a case of workplace violence. here is what we know about the suspect. they say zhou lived at the mushroom farm for seven years at one of the shooting scenes. there were three mobile homes and six trailers on the property. zhou was eligible to work in the u.s. and had a social security card and drivers license. authorities

said he legally purchased a semiautomatic handgun to carry out the rampage. >> the farm workers. they were killed with purpose, with intent execution style. and this community, california and the country is reeling from it. >> zhou had no known criminal history in san mateo county, but there was a restraining order filed against him in santa clara county in 2014. a former coworker at a san jose restaurant accused him of trying to suffocate him and threatening to kill him. the order has since expired. we do have team coverage from half-moon bay again tonight. beginning with betty yu with how people are trying to get through this. >> reporter: as people pay their respects to the people in the mass shooting, the community is calling attention

to farm workers, a group often marginalized and overlooked in half-moon bay. through song and prayer, the half-moon bay community tried to heal at coast side lutheran church. ellen hank from pacifica came to honor the people killed. the service moved her to tears. >> it breaks your heart. once again, it has come home, the gun violence to our own community. and the most vulnerable among us. the farm workers who are actually invisible. >> reporter: ellen is part of the community organizing network faith in action. >> it's a powerful experience and i believe i'm a spiritual person. i believe in the power of community and love. >> reporter: together, the group chanted because we care. a message to speak up and step in to help when the community needs it. >> i think that was very

touching and i hope that we can continue to care. >> reporter: people moved by the tragedy also stopped by this makeshift memorial. in downtown half-moon bay, to honor the victims. vice mayor joaquin jimenez is also the farm worker program director for the non-profit alas. he is familiar with the mountain mushroom farm and estimates there were about 30 workers on site at the time of the shooting. several live in mobile homes. >> we have a group of five to six family members staying there. and they have outside bathrooms. port a potties. as we heard from the people there, that's where they hit. >> reporter: he hopes visitors who comes for the town's famous pumpkin or christmas tree farms remember the community's heritage and farm workers. >> we all get so busy with our own lives. and we are in little silos and we can't remain in a

silo because this is what happens. we are all in this together. taking care of one another. thing could change. >> we are also hearing stories of survivor. katie nielsen tells us about one woman who tells us she was in the building when the suspect started shooting. >> reporter: this is concord farm. the scene of the second shooting where three of the seven people were killed. one of the women who worked here said she was in a back building when the gunman came in and opened fire. she says the only thing she could think of were her three children. i had a chance tospe to her ex-husband. his wife in one of the back buildings when a man she recognized as a former coworker walked in and asked her if they were almost done. she said they were just wrapping up and would be going

home soon. she said the suspect walked out only to return moments later with a gun shooting and killing her three coworkers but did not shoot her. her ex-husband says this is a difficult time for everyone. >> reporter: she told her ex-husband she think it is gunman did not shoot her because she has never had any issues with him at work. you can see the bouquet of flowers placed in front of the mailbox in front of the mushroom farms. investigators spent most of the day here at concord farms gathering evidence just trying to figure out exactly what happened here yesterday afternoon. >> many of the people who worked at the mushroom farm had already been hit hard by flooding. people have been working to collect donation to

help them in that regard. it is still only january and there have been 40 mass shootings. 70 people have died in total. the highest number of shootings at this point in omis once again calling for gun control. he met with law enforcement and victims' families at half-moon bay. >> only in america. do we see this kind of carnage. this kind of chaos. this kind of destruction of communities and lives and confidence and a sense of safety and belonging. society becomes how we behave. we allowed this to happen. >> vice president kamala harris will be in southern california tomorrow meeting with the families of the victims from the monterey park shooting. our max darrow reports from la county on how the victims are being remembered. >> reporter: tonight, for a second night in a row, community members here in monterey park, california came together for a candle light

vigil to honor the 11 people shot and killed in a mass shooting at the dance studio on saturday night. and show strength for the and e commity well. we hear from dignitaries here in town. people sharing stories of strength, resilience, and hope. and the victims. the victims include people who were in their 50s . as old as people in their mid 70s as well. 67-year-old valentino alvaro was one of those victims. his family said he loved his community and was the life of the party. the studio owner also died in this mass shooting. >> stay with cbs news bay area for continuing coverage of both of the shooting investigations. well, a 49ers player facing possible criminal charges tonight. he was arrested in san

jose not too long after the niners victory over the cowboys. vern glenn is here with more on all of it. >> reporter: he was arrest ed the next day. we are talking charms amenihiu. booked on charges of domestic violence. he allegedly pushed his girlfriend to the ground during an argument in san jose. he was released from santa clara downty. and was serve with a restraining order. he is very important to the 49er defense. four-and-a-half hacks and two more in the wild card against the seahawks. it is not known if he will play sunday against the eagles. the 49ers released a short statement. they said they were aware of the incident. ultimately, this will be a kyle shanahan john lynch call if he plays. they need him, but this is a delicate situation as you can understand. >> we'll have to wait and see what happens with that. vern, thank you very much. still ahead, group of

fairly disturbing we have to continue to talk about this so much. we have new video of yet another assault on an elderly person in san francisco. police are looking for this suspect. we do want to warn you, you might find this video disturbing. this happened in new montgomery. a 78-year-old man was walking when this happened. this guy walked up to him, knocked the man to the ground, he hit him so hard, he couldn't even stand back up. somebody who works nearby helped him up and the attacker took off. the elderly man was hurt and taken to the hospital but we are told he is going to be okay. now to west oakland where a convenient store cashier had a scary experience this weekend. it started when a group of young men, some of them with masks on, walked into the store and asked for tobacco. well,

the cashier asked them to show their id and this happened. >> two of the men pulled guns out and made the cashier open the register. they started swiping money. at one point, a customer walked in and the group of thieves ran from the store. this happened saturday night. the group got away with thousands of dollars in cash. they announce ed two weeks ago. the robbery started last may and the thieves stole $30,000 worth of cash and goods. we are also learning more information about a music video shoot that ended with one person dead. multiple people hurt in oakland last night. this happened outside of a gas station near mills college. up to 50 people were there when

multiple shooter opens fire. three people were hurt in a crash trying to skill. mario navarro was killed. after three mass shootings in california in less than a week, the oakland mayor sheng thao said the city can only do so much. >> we need the national leaders who block sensible action on guns to stop the obstruction. stop and think about the lives lost every single day in our communities. and then act. >> turning to the weather. a nice sunny day. beautiful sunset over the golden gate bridge. >> we need that after that 15 minutes of news. >> we do. >> enjoy the pretty sunset. the fact it is not raining on us for the sixth day in a row. we have several more days to go. high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere is

building just off the coast. that means a hill of air taking over in the upper levels of the atmosphere, you can't get cloud to develop when that happens and the position of it will allow offshore winds to strengthen over the next couple of days. offshore winds reinforce the dry pattern. let's track the gusts and they will not be a major factor as we head into tonight or to start the day tomorrow. strongergusts on the map tomorrow afternoon. some stronger gusts than that on the map as we head toward around sunrise on thursday, that is when we could get gusts up to around 30 miles per hour. likely remaining below the threshold where a wind advisory would be necessary. but a noticeable breeze for the next couple of days but again, it is a relatively warm pattern. it is a dry pattern. the offshore winds pushing any cloud cover further away from the coast. so plenty of sunshine tomorrow and thursday. before we gradually

return to a closer to normal weather pattern. further down the line, we are eventually going to get back into a more unsettled pattern but it is still several days off. the six to ten day outlook from the climate prediction center and the eight to 14 day outlook which takes us through the first week of february. both show a good chance of wetter than normal conditions. sunday and monday, those will be very light showers. likely more miss than hit. but it is just the first chance of rain that will be headed our way. in the short term, nice conditions out there. clear skies overhead. temperatures dropping off in the 40s and most locations but still holding onto 52 degrees in san francisco. temperatures will be a bit chilly inland tomorrow morning. upper 30s to low to mid 40s along the coast. then we warm up. low 60s along the coast. mid 60s in the peninsula and the santa clara valley. not quite that warm inland in the east bay. you'll have a chillier start. but you will make it into the low 60s .

that's a good four or five degrees above average for late january. up to 63 in san francisco. just a degree or two warmer for oakland in the east bay. the warmer spots north of the golden gate, you get the biggest benefit from the offshore downslope winds. upper 60s on the map. warmer spots around santa rosa. topping out around 70 degrees. with very similar temperatures again on thursday. and then, we return to near average temperatures. by friday and saturday. that means a mix of upper 50s and low 60s . there is that chance of showers in the forecast sunday and monday. again, it is not going to be an all-day washout. showers still less than a 50/50 chance. if you get some rain, it will be less than a 10th of an inch but it is accompanied by chilly air. highs only in the low to mid 50s as we finish off the month of january on tuesday. vern? straight ahead in sports, it's the eve of the game plan the 49ers will hatch for the

all right, nfl up top. 49ers, want some good news? sunday's game drew a good referee. john ripped the last nfc championship game the niners won, but, the eagles are 6-0 in games hussey has refereed. 49ers enter the game as the hottest team in the nfl not named the cincinnati bengals. nine wins at home. the 49ers won't get the advantage of levi stadium not this time. not this sunday. slight underdogs and the players know it will be loud and hostile. >> it will be wonderful. it

the naacp standing behind oakland's top cop. community leaders held a rally demanding the city reinstate police chief armstrong. >> for all this time, he has our back. but today it is our turn to say we have your back. >> we demand that he be exonerated and when do we want it? we want it now! now! now! >> chief armstrong was placed on leave after a report from an

outside law firm uncovered alleged police misconduct. the department and the chief mishandled the officer's cases. now, civil rights attorney john buress filed the lawsuit that led to the oversight of the oakland police department. but now he thinks the court appointed monitor has gone too far by suspending armstrong. >> we are in a better space now than we ever were starting out. we do not have the kind of viciousness among officers. there is a real accountability. >> how good a job do you think armstrong has done as chief? >> he has done a terrific job. he is the one who has brought us to this point where we feel comfortable. >> elon musk wrapped up his third testimony. he is on trial for securities fraud over a tweet he wrote back in 2018. it claimed he had funding secure to take tesla private. that deal of course never happened. investors say it cost them millions. when asked today if

he attempted to mislead investors with his tweet, musk said quote absolutely not. google employees have been sharing lots of stories online about being suddenly laid off. many of them finding out when they couldn't log into their company accounts. now even more google employees are on the chopping block right here in the bay area. according to the bay area news group, the tech company plans to cut 1600 jobs here in the bay. last week, google's parent company alphabet planned to lay off 12,000 workers worldwide. 6% of its global work force. netflix free loaders. get ready to get booted. when they will
