under storm warnings and tornado watches this morning. that's after powerful storms and tornadoes ripped through the houston area yesterday damaging homes and businesses and knocking down trees and power lines. tens of thousands in texas are still without power. officials say that there are no reported deaths or serious injuries. jarred hill is in new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of close calls after that storm system took aim at the gulf coast overnight. their one mayor in texas said he was surprised that nobody was injured. meanwhile, as the cleanup is starting in that region of the country, there's a new focus on the possibility of snow here in the northeast. powerful tornadoes left a path of destruction in multiple communities near houston tuesday, ripping the roofs off of homes and businesses, knocking down trees and power lines. >> like chaos. and very loud. the metal was crashing. the glass was breaking out.

it was extremely loud. >> reporter: seniors at this assisted living center in deer park had to evacuate after the building was damaged. >> as of right now we have no injuries that we're aware of from the tornado or any casualties. >> reporter: volunteers came to the rescue, moving dozens of the animals from this now-uninhabitable shelter in pasadena, texas. in other parts of the state, strong winds and heavy rain brought on flooding. >> the semis were blowing a lot of the raindrops on me. hazardous for me. >> reporter: meanwhile, snow fell in northern texas and neighboring oklahoma. >> hopefully snows more. >> reporter: while snow has blanketed parts of the upper northeast this week, the storm system could bring a dusting to the otherwise snowless new york city starting today. so far new york city has gone more than 320 days without measurable snowfall.

the record set back in 2020 was about 332. we'll see if we actually end up beating that record. i hope we had don't get a bunch of snow at the end of the winter as people are ready to get started for the springtime. back to you. >> i'm already ready for that. thank you so much. i agree with you. thank you. all right. so more documents marked classified have been discovered -- this time at the indiana home of former vice president mike pence. in letters to the national archives, lawyers said aides searched pence's home. some were inadvertently boxed and sent to his home at the end of the last administration. >> we need to get to the bottom of it. i don't believe that mike pence is intentionally trying to compromise national security. >> holy heck, and i do wonder, you know, how many other formers. >> a lawyer for pence said the former vice president did not know about the classified documents at his home until last

week's search. the discovery comes after between 25 and 30 documents with classified markings were found at president biden's home in wilmington, delaware, and his former office in washington. the documents were from his time as senator and vice president. earlier more than 300 documents with classified markings were discovered at former president donald trump's florida estate. the department of justice is investigating both cases. in california now, communities are trying to recover from three mass shootings since the weekend. today vice president kamala harris will visit the memorial in monterey park and meet with the victims' families. 11 people were killed after a gunman opened fire at a dance studio during a lunar new year celebration on saturday night. meantime, officials believe the mass shooting at half moon bay is a case of workplace violence. they say an agricultural worker killed seven people at two farms that employed him.

max darrow has more from california. >> reporter: gun violence is surging in america. since the new year, there have been at least 40 mass shootings resulting in at least 70 deaths. >> this is the third mass shooting in california in less than a week. >> reporter: monday one person died and several others were injured at a gas station shooting in oakland. >> how many more times do we have to look at the front page of our papers, turn on our tvs, and see that someone else has lost a family? >> reporter: earlier that day in half moon bay, officers arrested 66-year-old chunli zhao. the sheriff's office said he shot and killed seven people at two mushroom farms. >> all the evidence we have points to this being the instance of workplace violence. >> reporter: in southern california the monterey park community is mourning and searching for answers after its own mass shooting. >> to see it change like it overnight, like to become so traumatized really hurt me. >> reporter: 11 people died after a gunman opened fire at a dance studio during a lunar new

year celebration on saturday night. >> we may never be able to tell them the why, but we want to be able to help them heal from this. >> reporter: governor gavin newsom visited monterey park on monday and then half moon bay on tuesday. >> and i feared two days ago that monterey park would give way to other headlines. little did i know i'd be up here. >> reporter: officials in half moon bay say identifying next of kin may prove to be challenging because some were migrant workers. max darrow, cbs news, monterey park, california. in washington state, a gunman killed three people at a convenience store. police say a 21-year-old man entered the store in yakima early yesterday morning and randomly shot two customers. they say that there was no apparent conflict. he then stepped outside and killed another person in a car. hours later he killed himself as officers approached. police say they were tipped off to his location after he borrowed a woman's cell phone at a target store.

>> he then called his mother, and he made several incriminating statements including "i killed those people." he named several statements -- made several statements that he was then going to kill himself. >> police say after getting her cell phone back, the woman called 911. the biden administration is expected to announce today that it will send tanks to ukraine to help with the war with russia. u.s. officials say that it involves about 30 m1 abrams tanks will be purchased from commercial vendors. it could take months to deliver the tanks and train ukrainian troops on how to use them. germany is expected to approve poland's jest to transfer german made tanks to ukraine. charges against a soldier in the u.s. have been travel ban travel banned. the "tribune" reports abdul wasi safi had been held at a detention center in texas for four months.

"the new york times" reports the doomsday clock moved closer to midnight than ever before. the clock estimates how close the world is to ending. that's according to the bulletin of atomic scientists, a science advocacy group. they moved the clock to 90 seconds before midnight. that's ten seconds closer than last year. >> nuclear risks increased significantly last year due largely to russia's unprovoked invasion of ukraine. putin has repeatedly raised the specter of nuclear use. >> the group also cited other factors including climate change, online disinformation, and the ongoing threat of infectious disease outbreaks. the clock has been in use since 1947. two months later the winner of a record-breaking $2 billion powerball lottery jackpot still has not been announced. the winning ticket was bought at a store in los angeles county in november. the store's owner has received a $1 million prize for selling the ticket. the california state lottery won't say if a winner has come forwards. the winner has up to a year, though, to reveal themselves. and espn says american skier mikaela shiffrin won her record 83rd world cup race. shiffrin's giants slalom victory in italy yesterday broke a tie on the women's career list with fellow american lindsey vonn. vonn retired four years ago. shiffrin needs three more wins to tie the overall record of 86 victories held by sweden's ingemar stenmark. still to come, hollywood milestone. how some of this year's academy award nominees are making history.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ on capitol hill, lawmakers slammed the head of ticketmaster's parent company over the botched presale of taylor swift's concert tour. livenation president joe berchtold faced the senate judiciary committee yesterday and blamed computer bots for jamming up the sales. senators argued ticketmaster is a monopoly with a stranglehold on the concert and sports ticket market. they said the company controls nearly 80% of all sales, and slams fans with fees. >> if you really care about the consumer, give the consumer a break. >> this is unbelievable. you ought to be able to get some good advice from some people and figure this out.

>> this is what led -- >> ticketmaster has denied any anti-competitive practices. sources tell cbs news the justice department already opened an antitrust investigation into ticketmaster even before the taylor swift meltdown. america's largest private employer is hiking wages, and one singer is reportedly $200 million richer after selling his music catalog. shanelle kaul has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: a technical glitch with the new york stock exchange prompted a wild start to the market today with two of the three major indices losing steam. the dow gained 104 points. nasdaq lost 30, and the s&p 500 was down by 2. the department of justice is accusing google of illegally monopolizing online ads. the doj and eight states are suing the internet giant for acquiring competitors and steering potential customers to its own products.
