group of people who control them like they are puppets. universal background checks supported by everyone. gun owners and non-gun owners alike. yet we cannot at that past. >> the issue has become politicized. governor gavin newsom did not shy away. he called out republicans. specifically kevin mccarthy on what he calls in action on gun safety reform. let's get your take on this. first, let's hear what the governor had to say. >> >> got to call some folks out. i'm still waiting for kevin mccarthy, the leader of the house of representatives, who supposes to represent the people of the state of california. we have not heard one word from him. not as monterey park. not with what happened here. not one word. >> your reaction to the governor's anger calling out
3:09 pm
kevin mccarthy. they, assuming you mean republicans, a small group of people. who is the small group of people and what do you think about what the governor said? >> the governor is laying it at the foot of kevin mccarthy, in part, because kevin is from california. the problem exists not just in the house. we have been successful in passing any number of gun violence prevention bills in the last congress. we passed and assault weapons ban. we passed universal background checks. stalled in the senate where there is not the ability to bring up a bill unless you have 60 votes because of the filibuster. we were in a position still are in a position where we can get rid of the filibuster. joe manchin and christensen emma you are really siding with the republicans in that regard. as

long as they can control the actual results, we will not get this done. mind you, this is as you have put, normal. any number of countries. the eu has 400 million people. the united states has 330 million people. the last time i looked, and this was in 2020, there were 2500 deaths from gun violence in the eu. in the entire european continent. in the united states in that time, 35,000 deaths. it is not safe to be anywhere anymore. >> sorry. the governor also talked about how california is working towards solutions. he does not the support he needs and i think this is what you are saying there. let's listen to his comments on that area >> we are not going to back away from our resolve. we know it saves lives, period, full

stop. that bears no contrary evidence. it's incredibly important that people want to solve this. take a look at what california has done. we are not isolated. many parts, one body. you are only as good as your weakest links. >> is a community, where's the hope? we see that the tragedies happen and we hear that they are back and forth in congress. the various positions. and it's easy to say, if all of these people above me are fighting and we, down on the ground, are dying, where is the hope? >> the hope is in getting a majority in the senate to get rid of the filibuster so that majority rules will be in effect, rather than a 60 vote margin. it is restoring democrats. i hate to be partisan about this. but under a republican congress in the house, you're not even going to get a bill that is going to be
3:12 pm
taken up in the house. there are moderate republicans. there is a handful of them. but unless the speaker is willing to have a bill come to the floor, the likelihood of being able to have it dislodged from committee is very slim. the next two years, don't count on much of anything happening. that's the reality. until the american people rise up on a level that puts a backbone and some of these senators who feel that they cannot cross the nra or any number of groups that exist in this country, we will continue to see this bloodshed. it pains me in ways that only a few of us experience. there are still a minority of people who are victims of gun violence to survive. but think of the children who have done these
