breaking overnight, ukraine said russia launched a new wave of missile and drone attacks on the country. air raid sirens wailed across the nation as officials warned people to take cover in shelters during the morning hour. ukraine said it shot down 15 missiles fired toward the capital of kyiv. the attack came hours after president biden reversed course and announced plans to send 31 m1 abrams battle tanks to ukraine. germany also said it's sending tanks. it could take months for the u.s. to deliver its tanks and train ukrainian troops on how to use them. jarred hill is in new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. one expert called this american addition to the ukrainian battalion a, quote, armored punching force. let's talk about the timing. u.s. officials believe russia will try to go on the offensive in the spring, and that the tanks would help ukraine not only defend itself then but also retake territory.

[ speaking non-english ] ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy thanked the u.s. hours after president biden announced that a battalion of abrams tanks would be sent to ukraine. >> will enhance ukraine's capacity to defend this territory and achieve strategic objectives. delivering these tanks to the field is going to take time. time that we'll use to make sure the ukrainians are fully prepared. >> reporter: the president's announcement which came on zelenskyy's 45th birthday follows germany's statement that it will also send ukraine 14 leopard 2a6 tanks. >> it's about coordination, it's about the unity here and the resolve that we all have together to help support ukraine. >> if i was a russian tank crewman i'd be worried seeing those tanks on the battlefield. >> reporter: this retired u.s. army colonel says he wishes the tanks were promised sooner but believes they will help ukraine's attempts to expel the >> it gives them an offensive mechanized armored punching force that can carry out

offensive, create penetrations in russian lines. and that also potentially can produce surprise and shock. >> reporter: current tanks date back to soviet times. >> i think abrams is very good for us. it help us with victory. >> reporter: when asked about the tanks a kremlin spokesman said, quote, these tanks will burn, just like all the others. it's believed that these abrams tanks as well as other military officials will be crucial to fighting on open terrain like that found in the mostly flat donbas region. it's where there's been intense fighting since 2014. this is still a far cry from the number of tanks that ukraine has been asking for. >> indeed. they said they wanted hundreds. jarred hill in new york. thank you so much. video of the attack on former house speaker nancy pelosi's husband could be made public today.

paul pelosi was seriously injured when someone break into the couple's san francisco home last october and attacked him with a hammer. nancy pelosi was not at home at the time. yesterday a california judge granted a request from several news organizations including cbs news to release the body camera video. 42-year-old david depape has pleaded not guilty to charges in connection with the attack including attempted murder. and there are disturbing new allegations in the case of a virginia teacher who was allegedly shot by a 6-year-old student. 25-year-old abby zwerner is planning to sue the school district accusing administrators of ignoring several warnings that the first grader had a gun. police said zwerner was shot in the chest after a bullet went through one of her hands. she was released from the hospital last week. meantime, the school board fired the district superintendent, george parker iii, last night. he was criticized by parents and teachers after the shooting on january 6th. the community is still

demanding accountability as students prepare to head back to class next week for the first time since the shooting. jeff pegues has more. >> reporter: in the hours before 25-year-old abby zwerner was shot by one of her students, her lawyer claims three different warnings were missed. >> school administration was warned by concerned teachers and employees that the boy had a gun on him at the school. >> reporter: according to the lawyer, zwerner warned an administrator that the boy had threatened another student but nothing was done. later, someone allegedly reported the boy put the gun in his pocket, but instead of searching him, an administrator dismissed it because the 6-year-old has little pockets. finally another student allegedly reported that the 6-year-old showed the gun to him and threatened to shoot him if he told anyone. >> when a fourth employee who heard about the danger asked the administrator for permission to

search the boy, he was denied. he was told to wait the situation out because the school day was almost over. let that sink in. >> reporter: about an hour later, the 6-year-old pointed the gun at the teacher and fired. >> we have a female victim shot in the abdomen. >> reporter: leaving her in critical condition. she would survive. days later, angry parents blasted the school board. >> i send my kids to school and find myself praying to god that they will return home safely. >> reporter: in a statement, the boy's family said that he suffers from an acute disability that required his mother or father accompanying him to class every day. the week of the shooting was the first week when they were not in class with him. parents and teachers are still upset in virginia. the school has been closed since the shooting in early

january, but it is scheduled to reopen next week. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. there are renewed calls for stricter gun-control laws following two mass shootings in california within 48 hours of each other. yesterday vice president kamala harris visited a memorial outside the monterey park dance studio where 11 people were killed by a gunman on saturday. she said the nation is mourning the victims while imploring congress to act. in northern california, 66-year-old farm worker chunli zhao was charged with seven counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. he's accused of killing seven people at two farms in half moon bay on monday. he did not enter a plea. former president trump is being allowed back on facebook and instagram. parent company meta says that it will reinstate trump in the coming weeks following a two-year suspension. facebook suspended trump one day after the january 6th attack on the capitol. his twitter account was reinstated in november, but he has not yet tweeted. and yesterday on his social

there are new details about jeremy renner's snowplow accident, and there was a deadly fire in chicago. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "chicago tribune" reports one person was killed and eight others injured in a highrise apartment fire. the fire broke out yesterday on the 15th floor of the building on the city's south side. authorities say it spread to the 24th floor. the victim was found in an apartment where the fire is believed to have started. >> we had to walk down the stairs. i live on the 21st floor. i had to walk down 21 flights of stairs, and it was just chaos. >> i'm very, very surprised -- i'm very sad that this has happened. very sad. >> the "tribune" says that the building has been cited for fire-related code violations at least 11 times since october of 2021. "usa today" says an asteroid about the size of a delivery truck will fly by earth tonight

in one of the closest approaches ever recorded. nasa says there's no chance it will hit our planet, so don't worry. even if it did, most of it would burn up in the atmosphere. the asteroid is expected to pass 2,200 miles above the southern tip of south america. that's ten times closer than some communication satellites. it was discovered saturday by an amateur astronomer in crimea. and "rolling stone" says jeremy renner was attempting to save his nephew when the actor was crushed under his snowplow according to a sheriff's report. the two-time oscar nominee was seriously hurt new year's day when he was run over by the snowplow near his nevada home. the incident report says renner was using the vehicle to help pull his nephew's truck out of the snow when he got out without setting the emergency brake. when he realized the snowplow was sliding toward his nephew, he tried to get back in but was pulled underneath. still to come, a retraction by the razzies.

tens of thousands of flights were canceled across the amerans re left stranded during the holidays. southwest says it will cooperate with government officials but blames the chaos on a winter storm. democratic senator joe manchin is pushing to delay new tax credits for electric vehicles. he argues guidelines issued by the treasury department would give european battery manufacturers an advantage. however, his proposal likely won't advance in the senate where democrats hold a slim majority. and a new study reveals more than half of americans would struggle to pay $1,000 for an emergency expense. one in four americans said they'd react to a large unexpected expense by using a credit card. bankrate reports almost seven in ten americans are saving less due to inflation, and analysts say relying on credit cards could cause a deeper financial problem given the record high interest rates. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this thursday morning.

squirming and crawling a lot lately so they knew he was close. also in fort worth, doctors are calling 3-month-old twins a medical miracle. jamie lynn and amy lynn finley were born in october joined from the breast bone to the belly, and they shared a liver. after months of planning, a team of 25 at cook children's medical center successfully separated the twins during an 11-hour procedure on monday. >> this was the first separation of conjoined twins at cook children's in its 105-year history. it's obviously a big deal for us, but obviously for amy and jamie who get to sleep in separate beds, it was huge for them and for their families. >> doctors say the girls are doing great and are recovering in separate beds. the first list of performers for this year's grammy awards has been revealed. among those who will take the stage, bad bunny, mary j. blige, brandi carlile, and luke combs.
