this time of year. the push to make a change in the wake of two mass shootings. >> from kpix5, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> good evening, i'm juliette goodrich in for sara. the shootings are sending shock waves through the aapi community. this comes after the suspect admitted to carrying out the deadly rampage. 66-year-old chunli zhao said he wasn't in his right mind when he killed four people. he drove to another farm and killed three more, zhao told the tv station he had been bullied, worked long hours and the farms and his complaints were

ignored. a spokesperson for california terra garden confirmed zhao lived on the property with his wife. and they had no knowledge of any bullying complaints. the timing happening during lunar new year celebrations shattering what should be a time of joy and hope. here is what first lady jill biden said during a white house celebration. >> today as we are meant to celebrate, our joy has been shattered by two horrifying mass shootings this week. and our prayers are with the family of those lost in monterey park and half-moon bay. and we grieve with broken hearts alongside every member of this community. >> so tonight, victims from both mass shootings gathered in san francisco's china town to gather those who remembered those who died in the shootings. it was a chance for the community to grove and heal. our andrea nakano was there as many tried to cope

with their feelings of loss and pain. >> reporter: there are still a few people left from the vigil tonight. this was a chance for the community to grieve together and remember the lives lost not just at the shooting at half-moon bay, but monterey park as well. it was a time to remember the 18 lives taken. and for a community to mourn and start the process to heal. >> it has been really hard this time around. because we have seen it so many times. now. in the last couple of years. it took me a long time to process this one too. >> reporter: maria tang came to the vigil with her daughter. that feeling of numbness is one shared by many at the vigil. >> ♪ in the arms of the angels, fly away ♪°7 >> one day, my world collapsed.

i lost the dearest thing of my heart. >> reporter: one of the vigil organizers josephine shared her experience with great personal loss. the pain she carried silently inside almost destroyed her. >> it eats us alive within. you know? my heart has been so numb because i keep putting layers and layers of scar over it to the point that i couldn't feel anything anymore. but i'm dying inside. >> reporter: some in the asian american community say there have been obstacles to seeking emotional support. whether it is due to cultural and language barriers or lack of resources. those at the vigil say the time is now to break down those barriers. >> if we avoid it, if we hide it, nothing is going to change. >> reporter: as the community grieves, there is great promise for the future. >> she is going to be the hope and the change. and be part of

the positive. the hope is peace and that these violences end. >> and meanwhile, in half-moon bay, a floral memorial is growing for the seven victims of monday's shooting. a candle light vigil is planned for 5:00 p.m. tomorrow at mack dutra plaza near city hall. and we are getting a look at the conditions the half-moon bay farm workers lived in including the shooting suspect. ray mueller tweeting these photos he said from one of the farms. although he didn't specify which one. so you can see sheds and a mattress on the floor. although it is unclear if people slept there. there are also children's toys scattered in an outdoor cooking area as well. and a shed with the supervisor claims the suspect lived. now the governor's office says cal osha is now investigating the two farms involved. the attack at california terra garden was the second shooting at the mushroom farm in the last seven months and according to a criminal complaint, one of the victims

from monday's shooting naowly avoided being shot back in july. martin medina is charged with attempted murder after he was arrested on july 1, 2022 for shooting at his comanager's trailer. authorities said the bullet went through the neighboring trailer with a family inside. one of those family members ended up being a victim in monday's mass shooting at the same farm. but authorities say there is no connection. we have new developments in the suspension of oakland police chief armstrong. this morning, the local branch of the naacp sent a letter to mayor sheng thao asking that armstrong be reinstated saying putting armstrong on lead has caused division across the city and worry it will impact their ability to protect the community. and oakland police are facing a federal civil lawsuit filed by the family killed in a police chase. lola

sokai was celebrating his recent graduation with family at a taco truck at international boulevard when a suspect police were chasing crashed into the group killing sokai. the officers were on a so-called ghost chase where they keep their lights and sirens off. >> we want to see the people involved in the situation that happened on that night be punished for their actions. >> the two officers had been suspended and they could face charges. the driver in the chase has been charged with felony vehicular manslaughter. both the city and opd declined to comment on this lawsuit. >> it is going to remind you of rodney king in many regards. assault. battery. punched, kicked. tazeed. pepper spray

ed. it is very troubling. >> that is how attorney ben crump is describing the video of the death of tyre nichols that will be released tomorrow. police in tennessee are bracing for protests after the deadly footage of the traffic stop is released. the officers are facing charges tonight. >> reporter: five fired memphis police officers are now facing second degree murder and other charges for the death of tyre nichols. >> while each of the five individuals played a different role in the incident in question, the actions of all of them resulted in the death of tyre nichols and they are all responsible. >> reporter: nichols died january 10th three days after he was pulled over near his home allegedly from reckless driving. body cam footage and video from a fixed camera on a pole are expect today be released friday evening. those who have seen the video say it

shows the officers viciously beating the 29-year-old father for three minutes. >> this was wrong. this was criminal. >> reporter: the officers were part of the police department's specialized scorpion unit that focuses on violent crime. attorneys for two of them spoke after charges are filed. >> no one is guilty until the jury says they are guilty. >> reporter: memphis and other cities around the country are preparing for protests. the nichols family wants them to stay peaceful. nichols loved skateboarding. his family attended a vigil at a memphis skate park thursday night. >> we don't have to grieve alone. we don't have to be enraged alone. >> reporter: the shelby county district attorney said his team worked quickly to expedite the case because of its extraordinary nature. still ahead tonight, we are expected to see some key evidence in the attack on paul pelosi in just a few hours. why the prosecution and the defense

tomorrow morning, body cam footage of the hammer attack on paul pelosi will be made public. we are also going to hear the 911 call and see security footage. and a portion of an interview conducted with the attack suspect shortly after his arrest. the prosecution and the defense don't want the footage released. they said it might fuel more information about the case and the defense is concerned it could taint the jury pool. ultimately, the judge decided to release it after a coalition of news agencies argued that it is public record. >> the body worn camera footage was part of a preliminary hearing which is in the public setting. and so, once that body

worn camera footage entered the public sphere, there is no legitimate privacy interest. or, law enforcement privilege. >> the court says the material will be available at 9:00 tomorrow morning. at 89, senator diane feinstein has not announced if she is retiring or running for office but a growing number of lawmakers are jumping into the race to unseat her. adam schiff plan to run for her senate seat. but he is not the only one. congresswoman katie porter announcing her bid for the seat last month and oakland congressman barbara lee told the caucus she is entering the race. feinstein has filed 2024 reelection paperwork but she said she is undecided on whether to run for a sixth term next year. >> senator, when are you going to make your decision about 2024? >> oh probably in a couple of months. my husband passed away

moderate drought conditions except viejo. abnormally dry. so there has been some improvement. now, still, the 33% of california is categorized as being in severe drought. it is not great but better than the 43% that was in the category just a week ago and we continue to have zero percent in the worst two drought categories but we could use additional rain now that we have had about a week of dry weather to chip away at the drought conditions. let's look at futurecast. all we see is a return to coastal fog. some of that creeping through the golden gate into the bay. that will dissipate. a mix of clouds and sunshine as we head through the rest of friday. looks like a nice day overall. not as much fog to start the day on saturday. once again, a mix of clouds and sunshine overhead. the next potential rainmaker will be dropping in straight from the north. and that is a trajectory that does not allow it to latch onto very much moisture. we are talking

limited rain chances. hit or miss showers. more miss than hit. and if you get some rain, it will amount to less than a 10th of an inch. be flexible with the outdoor plans. just to be on the safe side. it is only about a 30% chance of rain in any particular spot. a better chance could head our way by the end of next week as we head into early february. lotsof turbulence in the long range data. but eventually, we would like additional rain chances. temperatures cooling off. they will end up very close to normal this time of year. dropping to the upper 30s to around 40. highs tomorrow, with that on shore breeze returning. almost exactly average around the bay. still three or four degrees above normal. the on shore winds bringing temperatures back down to the mid 50s along the coast. near 60 down the peninsula, the south end of the bay. mid 60s in the santa clara valley. low

60s inland in the east bay. about three or four degrees above normal. upper 50s to around 60 in san francisco. and oakland. at or just above 60 degrees for most of the north bay. that's a significant drop from where the offshore winds have pushed your temperatures the past couple of days. but you are still a couple of degrees above average. that changes. the cooldown continues saturday into sunday. the chance of showers on sunday. maybe a better chance thursday. that might have to be pushed back into friday. we will keep evaluateing the data as we get into next week. but again, as we head into february, maybe we can get back into a weather pattern that has a little more action to it. >> we'll take it. all right. thank you. >> uh-huh. still ahead, we will take you into the lion's den. meet the people who help keep an iconic lunar new year tradition alive. straight ahead in sports, these folks behind me not best friends of anything. 49ers. who

francisco's chinatown. chasing evil spirits away. bringing goodness to the neighborhood. where it all begins inside the lion's den, a tiny chinatown studio where jade wong is helping the next lion dance team get ready for one of their 200 performances during the lunar new year. >> this happens pretty much every weekend. >> reporter: and when jade is not managing a show, she literally becomes the show. >> basically work the costume. and the eyes, and the mouth. and this is the head where you make it. you try to make the lion look as alive as possible. >> reporter: as one of the more respected lion dance performers in the bay area. >> i could see you right now. does it get hot in there? >> it does. it definitely does. >> reporter: we follow jade and the lion dance team to a lunar new year celebration in the city of milpitas. >> this is one of our teams. it will be fun. >> reporter: where in front of

hundreds of people, you begin to understand the amount of energy it takes to perform as the lion's head especially during the zhan. a balancing and acrobatic act on a series of poles. a dangerous and physical performance that takes jade and her partner up to 15 to 20 feet off the ground. >> you're going to be sore tomorrow? >> i will be sore today and i will continue to be sore tomorrow. >> reporter: the pain is worth the pride, especially for norman lao who can trace the roots of his lion dance team to 1986 and even further back to the 70s started by his father and uncle. >> i'm happy to be a part of it and pass it on. i want to make it bigger, better, livelier. >> reporter: a part of the san francisco chinatown community for more than 37 years. and

cameras and they discovered that nearly 70% of the photos were bear selfies so they posted on twitter that 400 of the 580 pictures on the camera were of this guy. >> hey, boo-boo. >> just had to keep going until they got that perfect angle i guess. look at that. these cameras are used to monitor the 46,000 acres but this guy is making that difficult striking poses from every single angle. front. all important side profile shot. not sure which one is ♪♪ >> we understand. >> we understand the feelings of embarrassment of failing teeth and tooth loss. >> we understand the pain of not being able to chew or feeling confident smiling.
