i'm anne-marie green. cities across the country are preparing for possible protests tonight. that's when officials in memphis, tennessee, plan to release what's said to be disturbing video of the violent arrest of tyre nichols who died days later. yesterday five fired black memphis police officers were charged with second-degree murder and other crimes. nichols, who is also black, was arrested during a traffic stop january 7th. his family and their lawyers have already seen the video, and they say it shows officers savagely beating him for three minutes. jarred hill is in memphis with more. good morning. >> reporter: absolutely appalling is -- absolutely appalling here is how the head of the tennessee bureau of investigations described this video of tyre nichols' arrest. now as this community is preparing for the release of the footage that shows what led to his death, they're taking a moment to celebrate his life. [ chants ]

a vigil was held overnight for tyre nichols at a skate park in memphis. later today the city is expected to release body cam and fixed camera footage of the violent january 7th police arrest to led to his death three days later. >> i didn't see it, but from what i hear it's going to be horrific. >> reporter: his mother, rowvaughn wells, addressed the crowd gathered at the vigil calling for peaceful protests. >> i don't want us burning up our cities, tearing up the streets because that's not what my son stood for. >> reporter: attorneys for nichols' family say the 29-year-old dad, fedex worker, and avid skateboarder was shot, pepper sprayed, beaten, and restrained when police pulled him over on suspension of reckless driving near his home. the five officers involved were fired and face charges that include second-degree murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated kidnapping.

>> what happened here does not at all reflect proper policing. this was wrong. this was criminal. >> reporter: the city is on edge as it prepares for the release of that footage expected to happen later this evening. local schools here have canceled after school and athletic activities out of an abundance of caution. police departments in major cities are also on heightened alert for possible unrest in response to the planned release. meanwhile, the fbi and department of justice say a civil rights investigation has been opened. and that footage is expected to be, again, released later this evening, sometime after 6:00 p.m. central time. >> let us hope that people react calmly. thank you very much. >> reporter: yeah. well, the january 6th rioter who pepper sprayed a capitol police officer who died the following day is set to be sentenced today. 33-year-old julian khater has pleaded guilty to spraying brian

sicknick and other officers during the riot. sicknick later collapsed and died the next day at a hospital. a large group of capitol police officers are preparing to attend today's sentencing in washington. khater has remained in custody since his arrest in march of 2021. tensions remain high this morning after a deadly israeli military raid in the occupied west bank. israel carried out air strikes targeting what it says was an underground hamas rocket-making site and militant training areas. palestinian militants in gaza fired rockets at israel. it follows israel's raid on a refugee camp thursday that killed nine palestinians including at least seven militants. israel said the raid was intended to prevent an imminent attack on israelis. and there are new developments after classified documents were found in unsecured locations. the national archives is asking former presidents and vice presidents of at least six administrations to double check their files for sensitive material.

robert costa has the story. >> reporter: a warning from the fbi director whose administration has been involved in securing documents at the homes of the current and former president plus the former vice president. >> people need to be conscious of the rules regarding classified information and appropriate handling of it. those rules are there for a reason. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news that the classified documents found at pence's home were among boxes of papers and briefing books from foreign trips, and part of the explanation from one source is that trump discouraged aides from preparing to move out, so pence's aides didn't begin packing until after the capitol attack. "face the nation's" margaret brennan spoke to the chair and vice chair of the senate intelligence committee who are pushing intelligence officials for more information about the sensitive material discovered. >> do you have any timeline in terms of when you will get visibility into the documents of classified material that both

president biden and president trump had in their residences? >> margaret, unfortunately no. now that you've got the special counsel, the notion that we're going to be left in limbo and we can't do our job, that cannot stand. we need these documents. >> if in fact the documents are sensitive, materials are sensitive, and they pose a counterintelligence or national security threat to the united states, then the intelligence agencies ae tasked with the job of coming up with ways to mitigate them. >> reporter: the republicans in congress continue to push to investigate president biden's handling of classified material. and republican senator tom cotton of arkansas is ramping up the pressure, threatening to hold up the president's nominees across the board until the administration shares more information about what was found at the residences of both president biden and former president trump. robert costa, cbs news, washington. a senior leader of isis was killed in a helicopter raid by u.s. special forces. the biden administration says

wednesday's raid in a remote mountain cave complex in somalia also killed ten other members of isis. officials say the mission came together after months of planning and was approved by president biden this week. they also say no civilians were killed or injured in the raid. president biden paid tribute to the 18 people killed in separate mass shootings in california, including the 11 killed at a monterey park dance studio during a lunar new year celebration. mr. biden took part in a white house reception yesterday for the asian holiday. the reception was scheduled before last weekend's shootings. the president also spoke on the phone with brandon tsay. he's the man who wrestled the gun away from the shooter at a second dance hall. >> i don't think you understand just how much you've done for so many people who never will know you, i want them to know more about you. >> for you to call, that's just so comforting for me. >> investigators continue to

speeding truck on a new york city bike path faces a possible death sentence. a federal grand jury convicted the 34-year-old immigrant from uzbekistan in 2017 of the halloween day attack. six foreign tourists and two americans were killed. others were severely injured. the penalty phase of the trial begins next month. a woman was arrested after pretending to be a high school student, and the governor of georgia declared a state of emergency. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the atlanta journal constitution" reports brian kemp signed an emergency order allowing him to call up to 1,000 national guard troops. it follows violent protests in downtown atlanta last weekend. six people were arrested. the demonstration came after the killing of an environmental activist during another protest days earlier. authorities say the activist was shot after shooting and wounding a state trooper. "the new york times" says a 29-year-old woman was arrested

after pretending to be a student at a new jersey high school. authorities say hyejeong shin attended classes in new brunswick for four days before being caught. she was arrested for using a fake birth certificate to enroll. officials and students say that she spent time in the guidance office, walked the hallways, and texted classmates. >> some of the girls i know, the girl did ask them to hang out on commercial avenue, but they never showed up. she started acting weird with them. it's scary because you never know what could happen. >> there is no word on a motive for the woman's behavior. administrators say they'll reassess the enrollment process. and "people" says colorado park rangers found about 400 selfies taken by a bear. nine cameras were placed across 46,000 acres to monitor andlorn more about wildlife in boulder. when rangers checked the cameras, they found the closeup photos taken by one curious bear. now out of the 580 photos captured, about 400 were from the bear.

criminal case connected to two deadly crashes. and the fda advisers support the idea of one covid vaccine shot per year. shanelle kaul has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: wall street liked the latest gdp report that showed the economy grew at roughly 3% in the last quarter. the dow was up 205 points thursday. the nasdaq gained 199, and the s&p 500 also up by 44. boeing has pleaded not guilty to a criminal fraud charge involving two 737 max jet crashes which killed 346 people. the company is accused of misleading regulators who approved that model. this comes two years after boeing reached a deal with prosecutors, but some of the victims' families are challenging that settlement saying they didn't know about secret negotiations between the two sides. an fda advisory panel voted to switch to one covid-19 vaccine formula moving forward.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ britney spears says her fans went too far. ventura police say they performed a wellness check on the pop star at her california home after they received calls from fans who were apparently concerned that spears deleted her instagram account. spears tweeted that officers never entered the home and left as soon as they saw that everything was okay.

she also tweeted "during this time in my life, i truly hope the public and my fans, who i care so much about, can respect my privacy moving forward." it seems people can't get enough of the upside down. >> it's not going to stop. not until he's taken everyone. >> "stranger things" was the most-streamed show in the u.s. in 2022. that's according to nielsen. it registered 52 billion minutes of viewing time in season four which was released last summer. "encanto" was the top streaming film last year racking up more than 27 billion minutes of viewing. i probably put in a big chunk of that. and the "phantom of the opera" celebrated 35 years on broadway. the andrew lloyd weber music is -- musical is the longing running and the highest grossing show in broadway history. "phantom" has performed more than 13,000 performances in new york city alone.

. i'm justin andrews. on the morning edition, cities across the country preparing for unrest after the release of memphis body camera. one community is feeling shock waves, some calling the tragedies a wakeup call about mental health. we are learning more about the suspected gunman, including a possible motive. as you get ready to head out the door on this friday morning commute, a little foggy in some spots. we will look at the roadways coming right up. it's cooler for us today throughout the bay area, partly cloudy skies throughout the weekend, and a chance of showers, breaking it down in a bit. the recent mass shootings are sending shock waves through the local aapi community. during a vigil in san francisco last night, some were also calling it a wakeup call about mental health. this comes after the half moon bay
