... there was gratuitous beating. >> the death of tyre nichols sparking national outcry and tough questions. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news, bay area. >> good evening. i'm sara donchey. there are protests happening as we speak in parts of the country tonight, though things have really calm down the last few minutes. memphis, the city at the center of it all, is no exception. protesters blocked a highway there and said something has to

change. >> i don't ever want to get the call that that mother received. it has to stop with this one because no mother should have to witness what we saw today. that was cruel. >> here's a quick look at protests in san francisco, los angeles and in boston. police officers are there, too. in l.a. we've seen video of police in riot gear. another protest in l.a. tonight someone threw a smoke bomb in the crowd and police jumped in their cruisers and took off, but it's the video of the violent arrest that's been the focus tonight. we have some of that for you now as well as reaction from legal experts and we do have to warn you, the footage is disturbing and difficult to watch. the video is sending shock waves across the country causing outrage among law enforcement, civil rights advocates and activists alike. tyre nichols was repeatedly and savagely beaten by multiple memphis police officers all while cameras rolled. >> hey, i didn't do anything.

>> hey, i didn't -- >> turn your [ bleep ] around. >> the video begins with an officer walking up to nichols' car with his gun drawn ordering him to get out. >> hey, you guys are really doing a lot right now. i'm just saying -- >> man, you don't lay down. >> i am on the ground. >> on your stomach! >> i am. >> this police body camera video captures the officers pushing nichols on the ground when one of them pointed a taser at nichols' leg. soon after another officer pepper sprayed him. nichols broke loose and ran down the street. when officers caught up to him, they did this. >> you want to get sprayed again? >> hey. >> mom! mom! >> the violent takedown was caught from multiple angles including a camera mounted on a pole nearby that showed officers kicking, punching and striking nichols with a baton. >> they dragged him like he was a carcass across the street and just dragged him after they had

already beaten him up and they didn't know what kind of physical condition he was in. the man couldn't even hardly hold up his head. >> reporter: civil rights attorney john burris was, like many others, disturbed by what he saw in the video and equally upset after little was done to immediately help nichols either by the officers who beat h ramedics. it took almost 30 minutes and nichols falling over multiple times before paramedics finally put him on a stretcher. >> there are things you can learn from this that i hope that other departments in the bay area would learn. one, you got to intervene. you can't allow officers to engage in wanton disrespect and wanton criminality. >> police reform advocates say the problem extends beyond memphis police. >> this is not about five or eight bad apples. this is about a bad orchard. we're talking about the culture of policing in america and memphis is not unique. these officers wanted revenge after mr. nichols was able to run away from them and

when they caught him, they were basically this was a beatdown by a bunch of thugs and they did it with cameras on. >> the five officers have already been charged with murder, official misconduct and aggravated kidnapping among other things. the attorney for one of them, emmitt martin, insisted thursday no one is guilty until a jury says so. >> no one out there that night intended for tyre nichols to die, no one, no one. that's shocking to the officers. >> as far as what the officers' defense could be, burris says some clues were caught in the video in what officers said to each other. >> you could hear what appeared to be alibis that were developing, story lines. he was reaching for my gun. he was resisting. he wouldn't give us a hand. he ran. all these are things the defense will then

use to try to suggest t wastif >> fallout extends beyond the police department. two memphis deputies were suspended after the sheriff saw the video and two fire department employees were put on leave. here at home there was a small demonstration along market street in san francisco right outside the powell b.a.r.t. station. our andrea nakano talked to demonstrators there tonight and has the story. >> reporter: this rally was a call for justice for tyre nichols. many of the people here in san francisco came just moments after watching the body cam footage released by the memphis police department. >> it goes so much deeper than just this moment. it's just another name, another person of color. >> reporter: theresa keaton from san francisco joined the roughly 50 protesters that gathered here at powell and market streets. keaton says the

tragic cycle of violence continues to take lives of young black men. >> it's heartbreaking for me being a woman of color. we have our own issues in our community and on top of that, we have police officers who murder us in cold blood. >> reporter: the rally turned into a march as protesters walked down market street. >> if we don't get no justice -- >> they don't get no peace. >> reporter: they called for justice to have the officers in the nichols case tried and convicted of murder but also demanded the defunding of police departments across the nation. the plight to save the lives of young black men is something reverend charles gray has been doing for years. >> i come down here every day. i haven't had nobody come here and ask me what the hell am i doing? >> reporter: he holds this banner as he sits on the sidewalk of marcus street hoping to bring attention to the lives lost to police violence. >> it's tough for a black man

in america. it really is. >> reporter: reverend gray vows to continue doing his work long after the protesters are gone. this is a community desperately searching for a way to end the violence. >> it's a very deep issue and we need change. i don't know how to reach it, but it is absolutely necessary. >> reporter: the rally ended at u.n. plaza where organizers tomorrow the crowd this wouldn't be the last time they gather. their work won't be done until victims of police violence get justice. we turn to half moon bay tonight. the san mateo county district attorney points to a possible motive for monday's mass shooting saying the suspect was upset over a dispute about $100. when he spoke to nbc news from jail, chunli zhao claimed a forklift he was using at work was hit by a co-worker on a bulldozer and he was asked to pay $100 for the damage. zhao said he vented

his frustration about that 30 minutes before the shooting, then went back and shot his supervisor and a co-worker he blamed for the accident. we're also hearing from the victims' families tonight. our coverage continues from half moon bay. >> reporter: hundreds of people came together here in downtown half moon bay for a vigil tonight to honor the victims of this we's ooting. this was a space for people to come and grieve together and support each other through what has been a very difficult week. standing side by side, candles in hand, people from across half moon bay came together friday night to mourn the seven lives lost in monday's mass shooting. >> but it's just a horrific situation and i just felt that i needed to come out and be part of the vigil.

>> with all the suffering and we're a close community here and this is just really important. >> reporter: leaders from across the commthe stage to offer their condolences, but the most impactful moments came when family members of some of the victims through the help of an interpreter shared memories of their loved ones with the crowd. >> he was 50 years old and he was a very likeable person, friendly with all. one of his greatest qualities is that he liked to help people. >> reporter: emotions still so raw for so many, but several people told us uniting together like this was the one bright spot in what has been such a dark week. >> it makes me feel good that our community's together. my granddaughter who is 8 woke up yesterday and asked me if this

was real and that tells you that everything right there. this is real. >> reporter: this, of course, is just the first step for this community when it comes to processing everything and moving forward. they say they're also going to have events next week. they've scheduled an interfaith service on tuesday. they say everyone is welcome. still ahead tonight, shocking video just released of the attack on paul pelosi in his san francisco home. and later tyre nichols actually went from northern california to memphis, what his friends and family want him to be remembered for tonight. we will continue to bring you reaction to the arrest video online and streaming on cbs news bay area. as we head into the last weekend in january, the cooling trend that began today is going to continue, but today's temperatures we, in the 50s and 60s. we'll look at the full forecast coming up.

tonight we're getting our very first look at the moment that david depape attacked paul pelosi with a hammer inside of his home. wilson walker has the video and the 911 call pelosi made that may have saved his life. >> this is san francisco police. do you need help? >> oh, well, a gentleman here just waiting for my wife to come back, nancy pelosi. >> reporter: for about three minutes paul pelosi tries to explain what's unfolding to the dispatcher. >> he thinks everything's good. i've got a problem, but he thinks everything's good. >> reporter: at one point

depape even joins in on the conversation. >> okay. what's the gentleman's name? >> i -- what's that? >> my name's david. >> the name's david. >> okay. who is david? >> i don't know. what's that? >> i'm a friend of theirs. >> reporter: this is how that phone call ended. >> no. he wants me to get the hell off the phone, okay? >> okay. >> thank you. >> okay, bye. >> reporter: several minutes later two officers arrive at the home, knock on the door and wait for about 15 seconds. >> hi, guys. >> how you doing? >> how are you? >> what's going on, man? >> everything's good. >> hi. >> drop the hammer. >> no. >> hey, hey, hey. >> what is going on? >> reporter: the body cam video ends with the officers gaining control of the attacker and calling for medical assistance. depape's public defender once again blasted the

release as a "terrible mistake that jeopardizes the possibility of a fair trial." the release was also opposed by the district attorney's office. >> it's a concern for the defense and that in turn becomes a concern for the district attorney because the district attorney does not want to provide a change of venue motion to the defense who can then take this case on the road someplace when it's a legitimate san francisco case. >> a judge ultimately decided to release that video and congresswoman nancy pelosi is in washington, d.c. here's how she reacted to its release. >> i have not seen the break-in and i have absolutely no intention of seeing the deadly assault on my husband's life. >> depape will be back in state court february 23rd when he will probably get a trial date. he's pleaded not guilty to state charges including attempted murder and first degree residential burglary and he pleaded not guilty to all federal charges. if you live in san mateo county and you were affected by

all of those storms like so many people were, there is help out there for you. the city says you can now apply directly with fema for disaster recovery assistance. all you have to do is go to their website disasterassistance.gov. paul's here. that's obviously welcome news. >> that's what fema is for, to react to these kind of things. it might be a $1 billion disaster when you total them up. there were i think $18 billion of disasters last year. fortunately there's a dry break now. take a look at what's in store for us. the cooling trend continues into the weekend. the onshore breeze returned today and kept areas around the bay and along the coast cooler, but farther inland temperatures were a couple degrees above average. that changes tomorrow, everybody dropping down to basically what's normal and then the storm system drops in from the north sunday. the path of this doesn't give it access

to a whole lot of moisture. it's going to give us a chance of showers more miss than hit. there's going to be a little more snow flying in the high sierra and the squeeze the system puts on the atmosphere will produce blustery conditions, 20 to 30-mile-per-hour gusts on sunday. tonight just some fog heading into early saturday morning. that will dissipate and we'll see a mix of clouds and sunshine, plenty of sun for most of the day saturday. the clouds will increase heading through saturday night. the moisture will be again meager, at best. we'll see hit-or-miss showers, more miss than hit heading basically from mid to late morning into the afternoon hours. with the cold air charging in with this system, we'll see the snow levels drop down to around 2,000 feet. there may be a little dusting of snow on some of the peaks around the bay area. the hit-or-miss showers continue into the early evening and everything quiets down after about 7:00 sunday evening. we are back to plenty of sunshine with a few fair weather clouds

as we start the workweek monday, but the cold air makes itself right at home. we're talking about inland low temperatures around or below freezing monday, tuesday, and wednesday and highs are a good 5 to 7 degrees below average as well. winter weather advisory with this system for the high sierra, about flee to 6 inches of snow, which is a flake in the bucket compared to earlier this month, but if you're heading up there tomorrow, great weather for travel. come back on monday. in the long range forecast there is a signal towards wetter than normal conditions in the bay area and much of northern california heading into february. that's beyond the scope of the seven-day forecast. we have at least one more chance of showers in the next seven days thursday night into friday. right now temperatures are dropping down mostly to the 40s, still 50 in san francisco, but 38 already in santa rosa. temperatures drop down to mostly 30s inland, 40s around the bay by early

tomorrow morning and mid- to upper 50s around the bay for highs and temperatures continue dropping sunday. in fact, sunday, monday and tuesday, yeah, it's going to be chilly, low to mid-50s for highs across the entire bay area. if you get showers sunday, they'll total less than a 0.1-inch of rainfall. be flexible with outdoor plans, but i wouldn't rearrange anything and the next chance of showers late next week. next in sports, the san jose sharks had an epic collapse. steph curry was really good per usual. and we're counting down the hours till the nfc championship with the eagles coming next. still ahead, how the largest vietnamese community outside vietnam is celebrating lunar new year
