across the nation. protests continued yesterday after the memphis police department released video on friday showing the brutal beating of nichols this month at the hands of officers. he died three days later. jarred hill is in memphis with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this new district attorney here in shelby county campaigned on criminal justice reform as well as accountability, and now this incident between memphis police officers and tyre nichols is bringing that to the forefront. all the while, this community preparing to lay nichols to rest. over the weekend, protests to honor tyre nichols after the city of memphis released video showing the violent january 7th police arrest that led to his death three days later. the memphis grizzlies held a moment of silence before sunday's game. >> prayers, you know, to his family. just -- mind blowing and scary. >> reporter: churches offered

prayers. >> we're praying for that young man's family, for his loved ones, for his friends. they're hurting. and we're hurting, as well. >> reporter: the city of memphis is preparing to lay tyre nichols, a 29-year-old dead, who loved to skateboard to rest. in a public funeral on wednesday. >> i was heartbroken to see that brothers do that to another brother. it made me sick to my stomach. >> reporter: a february 17th bond arraignment hearing has been scheduled for the five ex-officers involved according to shelby county online court records. each faces multiple charges including second-degree murder, several sheriff's deputies and fire department employees who were at the scene during the incident have been relieved of duty pending investigations amid calls for further disciplinary action. >> had first aid been rendered, maybe tyre would have been beat up, bones broken, but he would still be alive. those that just watched him die, they are to be held as accountable as the ones that beat and brutalized him. >> reporter: meanwhile, the memphis police chief disbanded

the scorpion anti-crime unit which the five former officers charged belong to. the d.a. says there had been complaints in the past. now on the federal level, the congressional black caucus says that they have a meeting with the white house this week to discuss criminal justice reform. also the parents of tyre nichols have accepted the caucus' invitation to be their guests at the "state of the union" address later next month in washington, d.c. back to you. >> all right. jarred hill in memphis, thank you. millions of people are under winter weather and windchill alerts this morning stretching from texas all the way to the northern plains and the midwest. it's making for dangerous travel conditions with snow, freezing rain, sleet, and bitter cold temperatures. this is what it looked like in wisconsin as snow emergencies were declared. chicago was hit with snow and freezing rain. some places could see windchills as cold as minus 50 degrees fahrenheit.

president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy are set to meet at the white house wednesday to discuss the standoff over raising the debt ceiling. the u.s. hit its legal borrowing limit this month, and that prompted the treasury department to begin taking what it called extraordinary measures to avoid the government from defaulting on its obligations. republicans want budget cuts before agreeing to raise the debt limit. the white house says it's nonnegotiable, so mccarthy, rather, discussed the issue yesterday on "face the nation." >> i think it's very important that our whole government's designed to find compromise. i want to find a reasonable and responsible way that we can lift the debt ceiling but take control of this runaway spending. >> mccarthy said republicans would not allow the u.s. to default and said cuts to social security and medicare are off the table. lawmakers are pressing for access to the classified material found in the homes of current and former presidents and vice presidents. it comes as new polling shows

how americans are reacting to the handling of the documents. christian benevides has more. >> reporter: cbs news polling on handling of classified documents by current president joe biden, former president donald trump, and former vice president mike pence shows most americans believe they should all be investigated over the matter. with mr. biden pulling ahead of mr. trump when it comes to how americans perceive their cooperation with investigators. the new polling comes as the doj says congress will not be able to see the documents until the special counsel's handling of investigations approve it. >> our job is to make sure there's not an intgese iligemmie believe withholding the material is a mistake. both senators speaking out on "face the nation." >> these are probably materials we already have access to, we just don't know come they are. >> reporter: they argue the committee has a constitutional duty of oversight and access to the documents would allow them to address issues such as

polar over classification of material. the panel also controls funding for some intelligence agencies. >> you've threatened to withhold some funding to some of the agencies. >> i'm not in a threat business right now. but we certainly are -- there are things we need to do as a committee every year to authorize the moving around of funds. i think the director of national intelligence and other heads of agencies are aware of that. >> reporter: as the standoff for access to the documents continues, the race for 2024 is getting under way with trump holding a campaign rally in south carolina, the first campaign event of the year. christian benevides, cbs news. the investigation into another mass shooting in california continues this morning. three women were killed saturday at a short-term rental house in the upscale los angeles neighborhood of beverly crest. police say all three victims were inside a vehicle when they were shot. four other people were wounded, two critically. investigators are trying to determine if there was a party at the home at the time. and the man who wrestled a

gun away from the monterey park, clifornia, shooting at a second dance hall was honored during a lunar new year festival in alhambra. brandon tsay is credited with saving lives at the studio about three miles away from where the gunman killed 11 people earlier this month. >> most of the victims i knew personally. they'd always come by the dance studio, and i considered them friends. they were some of the most caring people i have ever met, and for them to be taken from us is such an excruciating experience. >> tsay is supposed to be president biden's guest at next week's "state of the union" address. it will be the kansas city chiefs versus the philadelphia eagles in the super bowl. >> for 45 yards, all the way, it's good! a 45-yard field goal with three seconds left to give the chiefs a 23-20 victory over the cincinnati bengals in last night's afc championship game. earlier the philadelphia eagles demolished the san francisco 49ers 31-7 in the nfc championship. super bowl lvii will be played february 12th in glendale, arizona. coming up, star quarterback arrested. stetson bennett, who led georgia to a college football title this month, was taken into custody. the allegations against him. and fiery rescue on the las vegas strip. the driver gets pulled out in the nick of time. this is the "cbs morning news." police say the car hit a palm tree in the center median. the driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the officer was treated for smoke inhalation. a former georgia quarterback was arrested in dallas, and we're remembering a tv actor. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports on the death of actor annie wersching. she died sunday in los angeles following a battle with cancer. she played fbi agent renee walker in "24." she also provided the voice of tess in the video game "last of us." she recently played the queen in the second season of "star trek: picard." she was 45. "the atlanta journal constitution" says officers pulled a man out of a stolen police vehicle that crashed seconds before a train hit it. >> come on! wrapping up a traffic stop saturday when a man jumped into his patrol car and drove away. after a high-speed chase, the driver lost control, and the car flipped onto train tracks. officers managed to pull him out of a window as the train bared down. he was charged with multiple crimes. the "dallas morning news" says quarterback stetson bennett was arrested on a public intoxication charge. officers responded to reports of a man banging on doors in a dallas neighborhood. they arrested the 25-year-old and took him to the city detention center. earlier this month, stetson led georgia to its second straight national championship. he recently said that he would be training for his pro career in fort worth, texas. still to come, your amazon groceries may cost you more. why some amazon fresh customers will get hit with a new fee. ford is recalling nearly 383,000 suvs in the u.s. because the touchscreens may not display a camera image when backing up. there have been at least 17 minor accidents due to the issue. the recall covers certain 2020 to 2023 ford explorers and lincoln aviators and some 2020 to 2022 lincoln corsairs. all have 360-degree cameras. many of the same vehicles were recalled for the same problem in 2021. amazon grocery deliveries will only be free for those who spend at least $150. prime customers who get their groceries delivered from amazon fresh and pay less than $150 will be charged between $3.95 and $9.95 depending on the order size. the service is still only for prime members, and the new policy starts february 28th. do you have someone you need to buy a valentine's day's gift for? you have about two weeks, and the national retail federation says americans are expected to spend $25.9 billion for the holiday this year. more than half plan to spend an
