children, but his own life . by some miracle i don't understand, all of them have survived. >> so we do not have an update on their condition. obviously, there were injuries and a major rescue that brought them out of this. the suspect in the case is from pasadena. in addition to attempted murder charges, he also faces enhancement charges of domestic violence. now to an update on another huge story that took so many people breathless. that was friday throughout the weekend, the case in memphis with tyre nichols. we can tell you six police officers have been relieved from duty following the violent traffic stop involving nichols. a warning, some of the video you are about to see is difficult to watch. one officer has not been fired or charged with a crime. his body camera recorded some of the video that was released of the violent arrest earlier this month. nichols died three days

later in the hospital. others who arrived on the scene are also under investigation. >> he is in handcuffs, moaning on the ground, and everyone is walking around nonchalantly like it's business as usual. it should be accountability for everyone on the video. >> that is the attorney for the family. five officers have now been fired and are facing charges including second-degree murder. two sheriff's deputies and two firefighters who were some of the 1st to care for nichols have also been placed on leave. the video of the arrest has renewed calls for police reform. the former president of the fbi agents association says departments need to return to community policing. >> this was a beating, clear and simple. and goes to the training. it goes to the hiring. it goes to the lack of community involvement by a unit such as this. but they need to be part of that community and

talk to people, get out of their cars, not aggressively talk to people and run up and drag them out of the car, but have communication with the people in your community, be part of the community, and that's how good policing takes place. >> we can tell you people in oakland were in their community over the weekend calling for reform within policing. hundreds marched down broadway to the oakland police department. they say they were fed up, hurt and angry by yet another police killing. they weren't the only ones feeling this across the bay area. >> i'm tired of black men getting killed by the police, black cops or white cops, they are all blue to me. >> they need policies in place. hold people accountable to those policies. create a culture where that kind of behavior is unacceptable. i think we have a code in this organization where that type of behavior is unacceptable. >> so as far as national police reform, the major conversation in our country, the family's attorney is calling on the senate to pass the george floyd justice and policing act.

seeing what the future holds for the kid. and then, plenty of fans like destiny are very disappointed. one posted this drawing saying, quote, a student had to make sure he showed me his drawing of property on the ground with multiple players piled on top of him after being sacked. it is rough out there today. nice drawing, young man. the lights that line the bay bridge are set to go dark as devon feel he is about to show you the chance for the lights coming on again really is dependent on some large donations. >> we had high hopes for what it could be for san francisco. it has been vastly exceeded what we hoped it could be. it has become entangled in the city, in the energy of the city. >> reporter: it is one of the most visible and beloved art installations, thousands upon thousands of lights that illuminate and sparkle and adorn the bay bridge each and every night. and they are about to go dark. >> they are suffering in the harsh conditions of the bay bridge, in san francisco bay, they are feeling faster than we can keep up. we will do the responsible thing. rather than

let the artwork decay, we will take it down. >> reporter: they will pull the plug on the lights on march 5th, the project's 10 year anniversary. but how long they remain dark and down depends on the results of an $11 million fundraising campaign. >> there is a possibility that the lights would go dark and never come back. i think, given the resources in the bay area, the love for this project, the generosity of our community, that we will come back. the question is, how quickly will we come back? >> reporter: the plan is to bring lights back with better, more durable technology and twice the number of lights. but that costs money and will take time. it requires an enormous investment by the public in the beauty of art. >> when the bay lights go dark, i believe it will leave a hole in the nighttime sky line and it will punch a hole in the psyche of the city. but what we want to have is a powerful story of rebirth and renewal. still ahead, the untold story of japanese-americans who escaped internment camps in

that. it's the first lunar new year celebration since before the pandemic . this event highlighted the diverse asian communities and culture in the bay area. traditional dance performances, and even a kung fu exhibition, in the last week we shared stories of japanese-americans who escaped internment camps and found safety and freedom in the state of utah of all places, a place called keithley valley. this is a personal story for ryan yamamoto because his father, as

that little boy you saw there, was part of a larger group. today we learn more about the produce owner who led the colony out of california and into safety. ryan introduces you to some of the survivors. >> reporter: on a summer day in august a group of japanese-americans whose lives began in california gathered in the state of utah for a reunion to remember their history, to remember their past. >> it is such a fascinating story. >> you think so? >> reporter: including the most senior of the group, ne two wee can't remember. >> reporter: you remember 80 years ago. >> reporter: and understand what happened more than 80 years ago in 1942 -- >> how many photos do you have? >> quite a lot. >> reporter: take a look inside the home of mary one arose. >> these pictures are

important. >> reporter: you will find an archive of documents that tell a little-known story that all centers on the single photograph. >> reporter: i mean, this is probably the most famous photo . >> i think so. >> oh, my gosh. where was this taken? >> reporter: a photo sparking more than just a memory, but reuniting old friends. >> you are in this picture? >> yeah. this guy, . >> how cute. >> reporter: these are the children of what is known as the keithley valley colony. during world war ii while 120,000 japanese-americans on the west coast were rounded up and sent to internment camps, mary's father, fred , an

oakland produce owner decided to do the unthinkable. >> when you realized he didn't have to go to camp, he said, i am not going to camp. he says, i will relocate somewhere else. he said, i will not be a ward of the government. >> reporter: he and 130 family members and friends made the decision to escape the internment camps and live free in the state of utah. but first, he needed to get permission. >> so my father went to utah to salt lake city. he met with the governor. he told the governor that he was bringing a group of americans, japanese citizens who had been loyal. and he told the la hyss ev lov movies. that was one of the things he said. you can put me in front of the shooting squad and shoot me. >> reporter: that paid off. the governor was impressed and with

travel passes the trek from the bay area to heatley valley, 40 miles east of salt lake city. >> so this is them clearing the land. as you can see, there is only one tractor. >> reporter: so when they got there, this wasn't farmland . >> it wasn't farmland. it was all sagebrush. >> reporter: he made sure the utah neighbors knew that they were loyal to their country. especially after someone tried to scare them with a stick of dynamite. >> we saw signs like this, food for freedom. it was important to my father to say that we are americans, and we are making food for americans. >> reporter: do you remember this photo? >> yes, absolutely. >> reporter: kim and helen were six and three when the family fled oakland and followed. the way you we the > sossy.tha

sassy one? >> that's the way she still is. >> i thought you were the sassy one. >> not me. i was the quiet one. we had a lot of friends to play with. we were all in this one, you know, the little village. and so we had friends that we could play with. gracie is gone though. >> reporter: but as those memories begin to fade, the last survivors of the keithley colony are making sure to pass their story on to the next generation. >> thank goodness we had mr. fred waddell. >> reporter: just ask mei what she remembers. >> i don't know. >> reporter: instead, she will tell you what she will never forget. >> reporter: you were able to live free. >> we were able to live free.

so we have both of ryan's stories. i think they are ite,ix.cma you look at them and share them. this is a story that is so little-known in the bay area. the world needs to see it . first alert weather, a laye and on the ground this morning. friends in lafayette, police were there warning drivers about the black ice about a water main break off the road near butler. so let's bring in darren peck. darren? it is cold out there this morning. it was. we will be cold tomorrow, it might be a little bit colder. the national weather service is on-again and off-again with freeze warnings for tomorrow. they put it back on. so north bay valleys, inland east bay valleys, i will show you who in one second. these are the lows for tomorrow. we have a closer look at the north bay valleys. typically, the coldest spots.

tomorrow will be the tri-valley. it will be even colder, 31 in santa rosa. we will see plenty of frost. we technically have a freeze in several locations. you have 32, san ramon, as you go toward the tri-valley, some of the coldest numbers are out there. they are warming. in the bay, low to mid 30s. if you have any influence from a body of water, whether it is the ocean or the bay, you don't have to get as cold. if you are in the inland valley, you have a freeze warning. the inland east bay tomorrow, and fine print says this will impact on sheltered populations and outdoor pets. that is the primary concern in addition to pipes and all that other stuff. this is the other one. it is a frost advisory. it's not quite as harsh, but look who is in this, everybody along the bayshore. in terms of cold mornings, it will get cold on tuesday as we saw. we will stay cold until about friday. look what happens, the morning lows really jump. that

is because, as odd as it sounds, there is a weak storm coming our way. the clouds from that storm are going to give us insulation overnight. by friday, we won't be as cold anymore. we will be windy in the mountains but not windy enough to keep the influence. we probably won't notice a whole lot. the wind is starting to come down. we have daytime highs pretty much low to mid 50s. if you want to see the next chance of rain that is going to be responsible for bringing in the clouds on friday, it is out here. put it in the futurecast. we see the outline of rain. we start bringing that our way. that is starting to look promising. if we want to follow that through, we need a resolution to go a little longer holding the models. but it holds true. there is your next chance of rain thursday into friday. coming in for a close-up look, watch the futurecast for what ray knight look like here. that is thursday night late through friday. that clears out most of saturday. and then saturday night, into sunday and monday,

new video from atlanta shows video that's playing out like a videogame. the suspect stole a patrol vehicle during a routine traffic stop. the driver took off, lost control and ended up on train tracks. as officers worked, and you can see it, to get the suspect out, a moving train came barreling down. all of them made it out with seconds to spare. then they were able to do what they were doing in the first place to try to get that guy into custody. a man who wrestled the gun from the suspect in the shooting in monterey park was honored over the weekend. the city presented him with a metal of courage. he confronted the
