>> my brother was talking to him and then my brother sat down to him on the bench, was talking to him like this. >> we hear from his brother and show you how a community is remembering him tonight. >> from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello, and good evening, i'm sara donchey. people in san francisco's japantown are remembering the life of gavin boston tonight. he was killed earlier this month while working as a security guard. now police say this is what was happening. he was just talking to a 15-year-old boy for a couple of minutes before that teenager opened fire. betty yu is in san francisco, where she talked to gavin's family, who is still devastated. >> reporter: the community came together to honor and celebrate

the life of gavin boston, the security guard who was gunned down just two months after taking the job in a neighborhood he loved. people who knew gavin boston and those just touched by his story left origami cranes, a symbol of hope and healing, in memory of the 40-year-old security guard. he was shot in the head as he was escorting a teen out of the japan center mall earlier this month. a 15-year-old was arrested for murder. a 14-year-old was arrested for being an accessory. >> i'm a mess. >> reporter: gavin's brother john boston struggled to hold back tears as he described his pain. reverend amos brown, head of the san francisco naacp, walked up to give him support. john said he watched the surveillance video, which showed gavin speaking to the teen for seven minutes. >> he was actually knelt down in front of him, was talking to him. and the kid was sitting on the bench. i don't know if he was

sleeping, but he was bent way over. and my brother was talking to him. and then my brother sat down next to him on bench, was just talking to him like this. and then after a while, you know, because they didn't want him sleeping on the bench, i think some of the business owners -- my brother's doing his job. >> reporter: gavin was described as a writer who loved japanese culture. he was a peaceful person and moved to san francisco after taking care of his mom, who suffers from dementia in the central valley. >> he believed that he could talk to people and i think he believe that day he was going to talk to that kid and just calmly and respectfully talk to him, because that's what -- that was his strategy was to be calm and respectful, and it didn't work. >> reporter: john said his brother didn't express any concerns about crime when he took the job. in fact, he was excited, but john had his concerns. >> because san francisco crime in general seems to have been going up. >> reporter: his sister said

her brother wouldn't have wanted his killer to be locked up. >> -- to get every help that he needs to be a productive member of society. >> reporter: on tuesday community and religious leaders and member of the san francisco police department paid their respects to the family. >> and he liked his job. he enjoyed japantown, so to him it was a good situation. >> well, from one heartbreaking story to another. hundreds of people gathered in half moon bay to remember the seven farm workers killed in last week's mass shooting. kelsey was at tonight's memorial there and candlelight vigil. >> reporter: hundreds of people attended an interfaith memorial service for the victims of last week's shootings here in half moon bay. the service included speeches from religious leaders as well as local officials and

community members. it ended with a candlelight procession through the streets of downtown half moon bay. it was another somber night in half moon bay as the community once again gathered to mourn the victims of last week's mass shooting. >> i believe that the pain and the grief that we experience right now on the coast side can be healed. >> reporter: people from across the community were in attendance, including family members and friends of the victims. >> i knew very closely one of the victims, marciano, marciano martinez, but also i came because i'm part of this community and felt like i just had to be here tonight. >> and to forgive those who have trespassed against -- >> reporter: a variety of faith leaders and local officials spoke. the service ended with them joining together with those in

the audience for a candlelight procession down main street. >> i'm trying to really be here to represent at least the organization but then also a part of the community and letting them know that we're here for them and that we all need to heal. >> it's heart wrenching. there's not much you feel you can do that's concrete, so it felt good. >> reporter: many of the people we spoke with said they want to continue to support these families even after services like this stop happening. we heard from city and county official who is said they are committed to helping these family as long as they need it. local nonprofits are also continuing to offer support. >> the lunar new year parade is around the corner. of course, it's supposed to be a fun time for family and friends to get together, but a lot of people are preoccupied by something else keeping everybody safe after multiple mass shootings in california. san francisco police and the

sheriff's office say they're thinking about that too. >> we do understand that the events of the past couple weeks are very troubling and very unsettling. that's why it's important that we are out there in numbers, that's why it's important that you see us. >> if you see something, please let us know and say something about that. that's the only way we can bring the resources to deal with whatever challenge there might be. >> so a lot of resources being dedicated to this because the district attorney says her office will be keeping watch as well. there will also be ambassadors walking around keeping an eye on the crowds. well, she is perhaps the most famous and successful female college swimming coach, but tonight teri mckeever is unemployed, fired from uc berkeley. dozens of current and former swimmers accused her of abusing and bullying them. charlie walter here in the studio here, he's been following this story for us. charlie, what do we know about this investigation that led to her being fired. >> the investigation lasted eight months with allegations

of bullying, harassment, and verbal abuse. today mckeever was fired. the report supported the allegations of more than 40 swimmers. the accusations included verbal abuse, pressuring swimmers to compete while injured, and even being dismisive of eating disorders. mckeever was put on leave last may after being on the job for nearly 30 years. mckeever won four national championships and in 2012 she became the first woman to coach the u.s. swim team at the olympics. in a statement athletic director jim nolton wrote i strongly believe this is in the best interest of our student athletes, our swimming program, and cal athletics as a whole. the report details numerous violations of policies that prohibit race, national origin, and disability discrimination. the report also raises questions to why it took so long for the school to act, claims about mckeever's behavior have been tracked back to as far as 2010. >> wow, pretty shocking, charlie, thank you for updating us. we appreciate it. still ahead tonight, this

a child is in the hospital after being attacked by a mountain lion on the peninsula tonight. this happened along creek road, that's a rural part of redwood city. we actually don't know how badly the child was hurt. there have only been about 20 confirmed mountain lion attacks on humans in california since the 1980s. the last one here in the bay area happened in cupertino in february of 2020. fish and wildlife euthanized a female lion that attacked a 6-year-old grirl in rancho san antonio reserve. tracy police have put out video of the moment they shot a teenager armed with a knife, and we do want to warn you, the video may be difficult to watch. >> put down the knife. put down the knife. put down the knife. put down the knife. >> we stopped the video there, but the body cam video does show the 17-year-old walk toward the officer with the knife in that yellow circle, and that is the moment when the officer shot

him twice. the cops say they were called out after the teen was chasing a family member with a knife. the teen was taken to the hospital and was reportedly now in stable condition. vice president kamala harris will attend the public funeral of tyre nichols in memphis tomorrow. he died three days after being beaten by memphis police after a traffic stop. reverend al sharpton will deliver the eulogy. nichols lived in sacramento before moving to memphis. more than 1,800 flights nationwide were canceled today, and this comes as a brutal ice storm hit parts of the south and central u.s. now, according to flight aware, 27 cancellations at sfo and 104 delays. oakland airport eight flights canceled, 44 delays. san jose, eight flights canceled, 33 delayed. if you are one of the 27 or 8

dropping down to around freezing by early tomorrow morning, except san jose staying about 5 degrees above. around the bay mid to upper 30s to 40 degrees, same along the coast. then temperatures are going to warm up. we'll start off close to 10 degrees below average but we'll warm up on either side of what's normal this time of year. mid-50s along the coast, upper 50s around the bay with a mix of mostly upper 50s and a few low 60s farther inland. trust shows high clouds tonight, those are real thin and not efficient at all in holding warmth near ground level. that's why temperatures have dropped off already. more substantial clouds beginning to build in. a mix of clouds and sunshine tomorrow. the thicker clouds are going to start to arrive as we head through the day thursday. we stay dry all day on thursday. by the time the sun goes down, the rain is out over the pacific. it's going to be approaching the coast just after midnight and making its way onshore in the pre-sun rise hours of friday morning. the heaviest rain is going to fall for the north bay along

the coast, but the showers will hold together as they cross through the rest of the bay area. everybody likely to pick up some measurable rain out of this system but not enough to cause issues. this is going to be beneficial rain, except for the impact on the morning commute on friday. but the showers largely getting out of here by late morning friday. we'll see the chance for a couple of lingering sprinkles the rest of the day before the next storm system moves in as we head into the weekend. this first one producing 0.1 of an inch on the low end to around 0.5 an inch especially north of the golden gate in the higher elevations. the next system moves in already with a few showers saturday afternoon, more likely saturday evening, saturday night into sunday. that next whaef of rain is going to continue moving in in a couple different waves of showers. 0.25 to 0.5 an inch of rain with that system, beneficial u just not convenient for outdoor plans. including the giants fan fest. that's saturday morning, beginning saturday morning, lasts into the afternoon. mostly cloudy, a chance of showers already by midday. temperatures won't be an issue, mid-50s there, mid to upper 50s for the chinese new year parade

in san francisco. all sorts of stuff happening this weekend. but saturday evening likely to bring us showers, so make sure you have the rain jacket handy and a plan to try to stay dry, because the showers are going to be a factor into about midday on sunday, then we should start to dry out. we'll see that dry pattern taking over by monday and tuesday of next week, but the long-range forecast which takes us beyond the seven-day forecast does indicate the potential for maybe one of these patterns of a shower chance every few days headed our way as we head towards the middle of the month. we'll keep you updated as they head our way, sara? >> we'll keep track of it all. he's been a busy guy last couple weeks. all right, thank you so much, paul. chp in tracy has a problem on their hands. look at this, another driver ignored the road closure signs and has kind of an expensive problem on their hands. drove right through the signs, right through the caution tape into a sinkhole. yep. it was wedged between both sides of the road, not good. well, officers say that the driver was cited and that this
