he has been taken home. the celebration of life and call to action. is the world community mourns the loss in the violence that brought it about, we worked to find hope on this first day of black history month. a lot of mixed emotions as the world community lays to rest tyre nichols that died after that violent beating. this coming on the first day of lack history month. we are inviting you to join in a community conversation to build bridges and other top stories, the boy at home recovering. after he was attacked by a mountain lion on tuesday evening.

let's come back to the top story. an important day remembering tyre nichols who died after a violent encounter with police. his story is felt all across the country, including san francisco. so many stepped forward to demand justice. >> it is when we become silent about things that matter. >> that is one of the messages. demonstrators demanded justice for nichols and his family and called for communities to come together and stand together during these times. >> you can't say you care about black people when the only time you come out is to march when we die. you have to begin to have stick to it if it is.

comes at the start of black history month which is meant to be a reflection and celebration of culture and history. the recent events may bring complicated emotions for many across the bay area and the country. someone i have come to known frames words and emotions in a beautiful way. meet tom martin who has work centers on social justice and these issues. nobody wears a sportcoat like you. i tried to match it and you outdid me. we wish you a meaningful start to black history month. it does come at the intersection of pain. >> we have to process it with a commitment to a new political -- . if we look at our existence , top to bottom, itrlesis enfor not just by police at the entire structure.

to remedy that, it has to be a movement, both cultural and political to reabsorb social power and power to determine the reality. until we have that determination, there will be this violence. >> i heard you speak before in front of the podium about systemic change. the woman at city hall said if you care about black people, you have to show up when the story is not about one of us dying. >> unfortunately, one of the foundations of white supremacy is this hyper- individualism that has only grown more hyper in these times. the danger of this individualism which is how i moved through life is all i need to worry about. that comes with it is not the faults individualism but also a

history month. you can see more at 6:00 and we will continue celebrating through this lens and so many others. charlie walker, known as the mayor of bayview hunters point has died. he secured the contract to clean stinson beach, following an oil spill that happened in 1971. you might remember the story of how he got the contract and the discrimination he faced was turned into a movie called i am charlie walker. he was an air force veteran and one of the first black employees of the san francisco chronicle. last year, the board of supervisors honored huge contributions to the city by naming a street in the bayview area, charlie?. he was 89 years old. still ahead, culturing community. to focus on black history month continues on how oakland was celebrating. strachan has been a nice start to the month. high clouds filtering sunshine.

dreamy live is the president and ceo of visit oakland. thank you for being with us. we have to acknowledge, not only the first day of black history month but also the painful wounds that are being shot with not only the death but the burial of tyre nichols and the calls for change in justice and reform. how are you building bridges and pursuing solutions. >> building many bridges. thank you for having us. black history month is the place to celebrate. oakland is a great place to celebrate. the town is deeply rooted through the social movement of the black panther party. we have many events set up, not for only the local community but the national and international community to experience the town. starting with february 5 with several festivities in the and.

>> it is important to get together and have community and have these events for visibility and conversation. how do you think the tone will change some of those conversations? >> i strongly believe that we need to set events are opportunities to start. on february 5 in oakland, it is the lunar new year and black history month community celebration. i take a lot of pride in it. it is not only black history month but seeing asian black communities come together with great dialogue and celebration. >> we know you have events for involved. ll can get imrtt thatwe gros so we can contribute to the overall conversation. >> one of my favorite celebrations is the black joy

parade happening february 26. it is free and family-friendly. celebrating the black experience, past present and future. i attended last year and it was amazing. the town comes to life. just to see families and people from all cultures coming together and celebrating is one- of-a-kind. >> black joy and black excellence which is one of our goals as we as the community station and people that bring you the stories at home really want to sell the picture in the community because it exists. thank you so much. we appreciate you. we wish you great celebrations. >> i will be waiting. agencies g ar honoring bla hiory month.

florida is threatening to restrict african-american studies and schools. the department of education of california tweeted they celebrate black history month as part of the ongoing effort to acknowledge, recognize and honor diverse histories and backgrounds. students, staff and families. they also set in california there will be a special display at headquarters and other activities all month. santa clara county tweeted that today is the start of black history month. calling on us to honor those that inspired others to dream and succeed. the san franciscomen's chorus honored and celebrate black commands that shaped history and without whom music, arts and culture as we know it would not be the same. all month, we want to know how you are celebrating. make sure to send your stories. we can put that on there and continue that celebration. it is time for look at the forecast with paul hagan.

we hear about those fixed dividends in oakland. we hope that they at least get a little bit of rain. maybe not too much rain. >> we need to aim for that goldilocks zone. a little additional rain. not too much to put us into flood worries. we are in store for about a couple of times. partly cloudy skies tonight. a thin veil of clouds will not be very efficient. it will be chilly out there. the clouds will thicken throughout the day. dries out by friday afternoon. rain is in the forecast. let's check future cast. all we will see is the thin veil of clouds overnight. the more substantial cloud cover will roll our way gradually. mostly cloudy skies by tomorrow afternoon. the rain is hanging to the

it looks like the most widespread or heaviest rain will fall before the sun comes up on friday. it means we will have to contend with wet roads. it is about mid to late morning on friday. the model dries us out and tries to break the sunshine. friday afternoon looks mostly dry. it will stay dry friday night and at least to start the day on saturday, the better chance of rain will roll our way late afternoon into the evening and overnight. the first round is beneficial without flooding concern. close to 1/2 inch before it first moves on shore. lower amounts as we get into those spots. the next looks a bit more sis henschel -- substantial. that is as early as saturday afternoon, most of the rain saturday night.

it does have the potential to complicate the weekend plans. the earlier you out there the more likely you will stay dry. showers are with us at any point this weekend. it does look like the parade could be wet. if you will be out there saturday evening, expecting a huge crowd. chilly tonight with temperatures in the 30s. high temperatures tomorrow will warm back up to around what is normal. some spots below average in some spots above. the warmest locations will be in santa clarita. up in the mid 60s around san jose. temperatures near 60 around the bay. you will be chilly and lake
