of san francisco? one group says fentanyl. what the city must do now before more people die on the street. from kpix, this is the late news with sarah. >> jj smith says he has lived in the tenderloin for over 20 years and he has seen fentanyl destroying it. he is documenting the drug use and posting raw and shocking videos online. he says his brother died from a fentanyl overdose three months ago. tonight jj was at a packed city meeting about how to fix this problem. one demand is to finish open air drug markets now. according to data 625 people died from overdoses in 2021. that is when the mayor declared a state of emergency to address this. a overwhelming number of the debts was caused

by fentanyl. we talked with jj about the deadly problem at his doorstep. >> reporter: those people say the problem came out during the pandemic but one message came out loud and clear, action can be taken to save lives and create a safer san francisco. jj smith walks the streets of san francisco trying to make a difference in the fentanyl crisis. >> i see a lot of people harming themselves. a lot of people close to dying. >> reporter: what hit him the most? noticing younger kids on the streets addicted to fentanyl. >> i started to see people that looked just like my kids out there. i saw people that were too young to be into drugs. >> reporter: he attended this meeting organized by a organization demanding real solutions. >> it seemed like the fentanyl

we want to introduce you to jack. he is 5 and he survived a mountain lion attack last night. these are photos from before this happened. tonight they are explaining what happened. they say jack, his mom and grandfather were hiking when jack ran out ahead and he ran into a mountain lion. it attacked him. his mom ran straight added and scared it off. the attack happened outside of redwood city. jack had a lot of very deep cuts, bruises and a fractured the phone. here is his aunt.
