deadly ice ss ve thiinng eet, a freg large part of the so the severe weather made for treacherous driving conditions in texas yesterday. at least eight deaths are blamed on the storm that also knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people. more than 500 flights have already been canceled today at dallas-fort worth international airport. that's according to flight aware. 1,300 flights were canceled yesterday. there's no class today for many schools in texas, arkansas, and tennessee. parents and students are being urged to stay home. jason allen from our cbs station ktvt in fort worth has latest. >> reporter: the massive winter storm continues to cripple the south, covering dallas in dangerous sheets of ice. some stuck drivers had to use muscle power to get their cars back on the move. >> i need formula for my newborn. so i have a little bit left, but just in case the roads are bad tomorrow i wanted to get some

more. >> reporter: ice weighing down trees and branches leaving yards and streets littered with broken limbs and downed lines. widespread power outages leaving more than 300,000 people in the dark. at dallas-fort worth international airport 75% of flights are canceled. despite the headaches -- >> oh, my god. >> reporter: some are having fun, turning roads into rinks. skating down streets and playing with pucks. jason allen, cbs news, fort worth, texas. the family of tyre nichols called on congress to enact police reform as they celebrated his life during funeral services. nichols was remembered with songs and heartfelt tributes yesterday. the pastor said he was a good person and a beautiful soul. nichols died three days after he was severely beaten by memphis police officers after a traffic stop last month.

bradley blackburn is here in new york with more. god morning. >> reporter: good morning. tyre nichols' family was surrounded by high-profile mourners yesterday. their grief and their call to action will stay front and center on the national stage with nichols' mother and stepfather attends the state of the union next week. the call for police reform is already under way. today president biden is set to meet with members of the congressional black caucus to discuss the george floyd justice in policing act one day after tyre nichols was laid to rest in memphis. ♪ at the mississippi boulevard christian church, mourners celebrated his life cut tragically short at 29 following a violent encounter with police. among them was vice president kamala harris. >> this is a family that lost their son and their brother through an act of violence at the hands and the feet of people who had been charged with

keeping them safe. >> reporter: for nichols' family, there was pain. >> tyre was a beautiful person. for this to happen to him is just unimaginable. >> reporter: followed by calls for action. >> we have to fight for justice. >> reporter: longtime civil rights activist reverend al sharpton delivered the eulogy. he spoke directly to the five black police officers charged in nichols' death. he reminded them from the city where dr. martin luther king jr. was assassinated of the struggle that happened before they could hold those jobs in law enforcement. >> people had to march and go to jail, and some lost their lives, to open the doors for you, and how dare you. >> reporter: crowds gathered in other parts of the country to honor nichols' memory yesterday. from north carolina to his native california. and there could be a noteworthy change to the george floyd justice in policing act. yesterday attorney ben crump said that a new section will be

added to the bill to honor tyre nichols. it would make police officers responsible for intervening if a fellow officer is doing something illegal. it's not clear, though, whether there's enough republican support for the bill to pass. >> all right, bradley blackburn in new york. thank you. a washington, d.c., metro employee was killed and three others were hurt when a gunman opened fire during morning rush hour. authorities say a man followed a passenger off a bus yesterday and shot him in the leg. the gunman then went into a metro station and shot another person in the leg. he then confronted a woman on a train platform. two employees tried to intervene. one of them, 64-year-old robert cunningham, was shot and killed. passengers subdued the man, and he was arrested by police. >> through the heroic actions of our citizens, our community, to disarm this shooter, i can't put a price on that. i think they saved lives.

>> the other metro employee who intervened suffered a hand injury. the white house says president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy will continue their conversation after meeting at the white house for more than an hour. the two leaders met face to face yesterday to discuss raising the federal debt limit so the u.s. does not default on its obligations. republicans want budget cuts before agreeing to raise the ceiling. the president says he won't negotiate over raising the debt limit but is open to separate talks on reducing the deficit. >> look, i think the president and i have talked about a lot of ideas. we'll work to see if we can come to agreement. >> we incurred these debts already. we should just pay them. the republicans say no. well, what's their alternative? we haven't seen it. >> the treasury department says it can take steps to delay a default for several months. the fbi is investigating embattled new york congressman george santos for an alleged gofundme scheme involving a homeless navy veteran's

cancer-stricken dog. the disabled veteran says santos raised $3,000 in 2016 that was supposed to be used for the dog's lifesaving surgery. the veteran says he never received the money. the dog died six months later. santos, who is under investigation over his personal and campaign finances, has denied the allegation. legendary nfl quarterback tom brady announced his retirement again, but this time he says it's for good. >> only get one super emotional retirement essay, and i used mine up last year. so i really thank you guys so much, to every single one of you, for supporting me. >> the seven-time super bowl champion made the announcement yesterday on social media. it came one year after he first said he was retiring, but he reversed course weeks later and came back this season. the 45-year-old played 23 seasons and holds many records including career passing yards

reserve offensive lineman, josh sills, has been indicted on rape and kidnapping charges. an ohio grand jury indicted the 25-year-old rookie earlier this week. the alleged crime took place in 2019. sills played in just one game for the nfc champs. he was placed on the nfl commissioner's exempt list, that means he can't practice, play, or travel with the team as it prepares for the super bowl. sills' attorney says the allegations are false. there were disruptions at l.a.x. after a power outage, and a kidnapping suspect is also accused of murder. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the oregonian" reports a man suspected of kidnapping and torturing a woman last month killed two men before taking his own life. that's according to police. authorities say 36-year-old

benjamin foster shot and killed himself during a standoff with police tuesday night. police say that the bodies of two men who apparently did not know foster were found in a house about 15 miles away. >> my understanding is that we believe blunt force trauma was the means used in this, and it's a brutal scene. unfortunately that we're processes. >> police said the men were killed between monday and tuesday as authorities searched for foster. the "los angeles times" says a power outage at los angeles international airport halted security screenings, delayed flights, and trapped some travelers. most of the terminals lost power during yesterday's outage which lasted about an hour. it knocked out lights and trapped people in elevators. passengers on at least one plane could not get off when jet bridges stopped working. there's no word on what caused the power failure. the "associated press" says

netting off the big island of hawaii got an assist. on tuesday a team from the national oceanic and atmospheric administration cut the netting along with two buoys. they used a hooked knife on the end of a 30-foot pole. about 100 feet of rope line was removed. the whale is said to be in poor condition, though, but now has a better chance of survival. if you're looking to buy a car or home, interest rates just went up. the federal reserve announced another increase yesterday by a quarter point. the key rate is now 4.75%. the highest level in 15 years. the fed's goal is to slow consumer spending and bring down inflation rates. with more in the cbs "money watch" report, here's shanelle kaul. >> reporter: stocks finished higher wednesday as investors were optimistic about the fed's economic assessment. the dow added 6 points, nasdaq was up 231, and the s&p gained

had 2 points. attorneys general in 20 conservative-led states are warning the nation's largest pharmacies not to sell abortion pills by mail. the joint letter warns cvs and walgreens that the sale of those pills could result in legal action. this follows the supreme court ruling to overturn roe v. wade last summer. americans will soon have to pay to enter the uk. in an effort to secure and digitize its borders, the uk will soon be implementing an electronic travel authorization scheme. that means u.s. citizens will have to get permission prior to entering the country and pay a small fee. the uk will implement this new eta process by the end of 2023. and bugatti is making history fetching the most money for a new car in a global auction. the luxury carmaker sold its last purely gas-powered vehicle at a paris auction for $10.7 million. the sale price far eclipsed sotheby's estimates of $4.5 million to $6 million.

beyonce's official site has the tour kicking off in may in stockholm, sweden. u.s. states begin in philadelphia in july. tickets are being sold through ticketmaster which is requiring fans to be verified as humans to prevent bots from flooding the system. then fans will receive an access code that will give them a chance to buy tickets. rocker ozzy osbourne announced that he is canceling upcoming tour dates in the uk and europe. the 74-year-old said in a statement that he is not physically capable of touring right now. osbourne recently underwent surgeries following spinal damage from an accident four years ago. and the rock and roll hall of fame unveiled its nominees for 2023. on the list, sheryl crow, missy elliott, willie nelson, rage kate bush, rage against the machine, iron maiden, and a tribe called quest.
