survivors is under way after an 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern turkey. 640 people were killed in turkey and northern syria. hundreds are believed to be trapped under rubble. the death toll is expected to rise. thousands more were injured when the quake hit before day break while people were sleeping. toppled buildings and sent residents running into the strets. the epicenter was in turkey. it was about 60 miles from the syrian border. it was felt throughout the region and as far away as cairo. 20 after shocks followed. the white house said it's been in touch with turkish officials and ready to provide any help that is needed. >> china is accusing the u.s. of indiscriminate nat use of force and overreacting when it shot down a suspected chinese spy balloon. an american fighter jet shot it down on saturday off the coast of south carolina after it floated above the u.s. for days. there are accusations on capitol hill with republicans

criticizing the biden administration for waiting too long. jarrod hill is here in new york following all of this. jarrod, good morning. >> good morning. one republican senator said that president biden telegraphed weakness by not shooting down that balloon sooner. china is doubling down on its insistence that this was a civilian aircraft not a spy balloon that blew into american airspace they say on mistake. >> new accusations after the u.s. shot down a suspected chinese spy balloon. >> clearly, this was an attempt by china to gather information and defeat our command and control of our sensitive missile and nuclear weapons sites. >> they called the action of force maintaining the balloon was a civilian unmanned air ship straining relations between the countries. >> we have a real number with problem on a number of issues from the human rights violations to the violation of international business law.

to even the challenges we had with them on over spying. >> the balloon first spotted over alaska on january 28. it moved into canadian airspace and then back into u.s. territory passing over sensitive nuclear sites in montana before heading east. a military jet firing a single missile shot it down saturday off the coast of south carolina. >> they shot it down. >> they said to me let's wait until the safest place to do it. >> republicans are criticizing the biden administration for not acting sooner. >> he allowed a full week for them to conduct spying operations over the united states over sensitive military installations exposing photographs and the potential of intercepted communications. >> military officials say once the balloon detected, steps were taken to protect against

intelligence detection. the navy and coast guard are off the coast of south carolina searching for debris. >> a senior defense official says the u.s. will be able to study the balloon's equipment and surveillance materials in part because it was taken down over water and didn't crash on land. the full senate is going to be briefed on this next week. the pentagon says there is another one of these floating over latin america. >> thank you. a state of emergency in ohio community of east palestine. dozens of freight cars derailed friday. some were carrying hazardous materials. a fire broke out and continued to burn through the weekend. the governor's office warned a rail car was at risk of explosion. an evacuation order was issued for 1500 homes within a one mile radius. >> we have a team, two videos which show preliminary occasions of mechanical issues on one of the rail car axels. we're doing an investigation.

>> there are no injuries -- there were no injuries to train crew or residents. the federal investigation is under way after a near collision between two planes in austin, texas. the faa says a fedex cargo plane attempting to land saturday had to change course when a southwest airlines plane was cleared to take off on the same runway. this is file video anticipate not the plane's involved. the two planes were less than 1,000 feet apart. that is according to flight radar 24. the southwest flight departed safely. the fedex plane landed 12 minutes later. overseas, eye supreme leader pardoned or reduced sentences of tens of thousands of prisoners. it includes many arrested during recent anti-government protests. the demonstrations began after the death last september of a 22-year-old woman in the custody

of iran's morality police. the pardons issued by ayatollah khomeni come with conditions. 20,000 people have been arrested and more than 500 killed during the crackdown. >> the democratic national committee voted to change its traditional presidential primary calendar. for years it started with the iowa caucuses and the new hampshire primary. well next year the first primary will be held february 3rd in south carolina. officials in new hampshire have vowed to hold the first primary there anyway citing state law. it was a record breaking night at the 65th annual grammy awards. beyonce won four grammys. harry styles took home album of the year. we have more from los angeles. >> good morning. yes, beyonce sits on top of the
