earthquake in southern turkey. about 5,000 in turkey and neighboring syria have been killed. buildings toppled over and there have been over 200 aftershokz as people have been trapped under the rubble. we get more now from chris livesay, and we want to warn you that some of the images may be difficult to watch. >> reporter: buildings collapse faster than people can flee, killing thousands and trapping countless more. this little girl is one of the lucky ones to escape. others still trapped beneath their crumbling homes post videos to social media, begging for help. on the surface, a grandmother desperately searches for her daughter and 18-month-old grandson. the bitter cold and snow are making rescue efforts even more grueling. tens of thousands of wounded crowd into hospitals. children shake from both the freezing temperatures and the

trauma as the death toll balloons. around the epicenter, little has been spared. the historic castle which stood for more than two millenia now in ruins. the president of turkey is calling it his country's worst disaster in more than 80 years. on the border with syria, it's a region that's riddled with fault lines and civil war. after more than a decade of dodging bombs and gunfire, the white helmet volunteers must once again pull small survivors from the rubble. >> we need the international community to do something to help us, to support us. it's a disaster area. we need help from everyone to save our people. >> reporter: this newborn could not be saved. the father grieves in agony. like so many here, he survived a war only to witness new horrors

impossible to fathom. and both turkey and syria are pleading for international aid. the white house has announced it's sending two 79-person search-and-rescue teams. chris livesay, cbs news, istanbul. president biden is set to deliver his second state of the union address tonight. his appearance before a joint session of congress is the first since the republicans took control of the house in the midterm elections, and it comes as a new cbs poll indicates that a majority of americans don't feel good about the nation's economy. nicole d'antonio is in washington with more. nicole, good morning. >> reporter: hey, there, anne-marie. good morning to you. there's a lot of preparation to get ready for tonight. just like last year, security remains high all around the capitol. in fact, on my way in this morning, i noticed that security fencing is now back up, and as president biden appears to

address the nation, we wanted to break down some of the top issues we expect to hear tonight. president biden says he wants tonight's state of the union address to be a conversation with the american people. >> i want to talk to the american people and let them know the state of affairs, what's going on, what i'm looking forward to working on from this point on, what we've done. >> reporter: the white house says the president will tout progress on the economy as federal data shows easing inflation and a strong labor market with the lowest unemployment rate in more than 50 years, but many americans are still feeling the pinch. a new cbs news poll shows 61% believe the economy is in bad condition. >> we have more work to do to bring prices down, lower costs, and create some breathing room as he says for american families. >> reporter: the president is also planning to push for compromise with economic policies, but he does not want to negotiate the debt limit, calling it congress's

streaming and then continuing in a special report starting at 9:00 eastern right here on cbs. mandatory evacuation orders were extended to a sparsely populated area of pennsylvania after a train carrying hazardous materials derailed friday in ohio near the state border. crews conducted a controlled release of toxic chemicals yesterday to reduce the threat of a catastrophic explosion. erica mokay has more. >> reporter: the scene is still active and dangerous as flames train wreck, tompanyhat owns the train blasted holes in five cars to drain them of vinyl chloride, a highly toxic and flammable chemical known to cause cancer. >> based on the amount of material in there, it could burn anywhere from one hour to three hours. >> reporter: officials say they chose a controlled explosion rather than risk a catastrophic one that could have hurled

deadly shrapnel up t a mile away. >> if we don't do that, the car could continue and the entire car can break apart. >> reporter: it had been on its way from madison, illinois, to conway on friday. a car failed near pittsburgh sending essentially cars careening off the tracks. about 2,000 residents within a one-mile radius were ordered to evacuate. the roughly 500 people who stayed were threatened with arrests by the county sheriff's office. >> you need to leave. you just need to leave. we're ordering you to leave. this is a matter of life and death. >> reporter: nate velez fled his home with his son. >> my son is only 9. we hightailed it out of there. >> what did it sound like out there? >> the apocalypse. >> reporter: there have not been any deaths or injuries.

the company that owns these railcars says the plant explosion was successful and now those hazardous materials are burning off. to give you some perspective, the plume of smoke could be seen on radar. on the edge of east palestine, ohio, i'm erica mokay. well, a maryland woman and a florida neo-nazi leader are under arrest for allegedly planning to attack baltimore's power grid. sarah clendaniel and brandon russell spent months planning to shoot power stations around the city of baltimore. they're accused of trying to further their racist mission. they communicated with an fbi informant. there's no word that the plot was carried out or related to other plot attacks across the country. and there are disturbing new details in the alleged incident involving the 6-year-old boy accused of shooting and wounding his teacher last month in virginia.

the teacher abby zwerner filed a legal notice planning to sue. the boy slammed and broke her cellphone two days before the shooting. it also claims he once choked another teacher until she couldn't breathe. school administrators have been accused of ignoring warnings the boy had a gun the day of the shooting. a south carolina judge is allowing jurors in the double murder trial of former attorney alex murdaugh to hear evidence of his alleged financial crimes. murdaugh is accused of murdering his wife and 22-year-old son in 2021. now, prosecutors say he killed his family to gain sympathy and buy time to cover up the millions of dollars he allegedly stole from his law firm and clients. the judge said the alleged financial crimes are a possible motive for murders. well, coming up, tiktok ban. texas announces a now policy for

"the dallas morning news" reports texas state governor greg abbott plans to ban tick tock on all state-issued devices. he outlined objectives to protect sensitive information and critical infrastructure to avoid threats. there are fears china could obtain data from customers from the beijing-based china. each state has until february 15th to implement its own policy to enforce the statewide plan. here here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. the federal aviation administration wants united airlines to pay more than a million dollars in fines. it accused united of conducting boeing -- 777 flights without making required preflight fire system warning checks. the faa says it believes more than 1,200 flights were flown that did not meet u.s. airworthiness requirements. united says that it changed its preflight check list in 2018 with the approval of the faa. the airline has 30 days to formally respond to the faa's letter. more than 400 food products have been recalled because of possible listeria contamination. all of the items were sold

between december 24th and jan 30th. the recalled items from fresh ideation food products include breakfast and deli sandwiches, salads, yogurts, and fruit cups. no illnesses have been reported so far. another tech company announced layoffs. and the next time you head to the movies, you may be charged more based on where you sit. shanelle kaul has those stories and more in today's "moneywatch" report. >> u.s. stocks fell for a second straight day as concerns are growing the central bank could impose another interest rate hike. the dow lost 34 points, nasdaq down 119 points, and the s&p 500 lost 25 points. more job cuts in the tech sector. dow is slashing 5% of its work force, which works out to roughly 6,600 employees. industry experts say the layoffs are the result of slowing demand for pcs and laptops.
