>> now 11:00, the state of the union address touched on everything from the economy to our democracy, some of it in front of a tough crowd. >> from kpix 5, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs bay area. >> good evening. i am sara donchey, and welcome to cbs bay area. president biden talked for 73 minutes tonight. he had a lot to say in the state of the union address. he talked about job growth, emerging from the pandemic and threats to our democracy. kevin mccarthy sat mostly expressionless behind the president. democrats cheer the president and a handful of republicans did the opposite. >> instead of making the wealthy pay their fair share, some republicans want medicare and social security to sunset. i am not saying it is a majority -- let me give you -- anybody who doubts it, contact my office and i will give you a copy of the proposal.
1:39 am
>> got a little testy there! katie nielsen with how people in the bay area are reacting to the state of the union. katie? >> reporter: sarah, anybody who follows politics was watching the president tonight. we had a chance to talk with folks i watch party about the remarks. >> mr. speaker, the president of the united states! >> reporter: almost 100 people packed into manny's in san francisco for the annual state of the union watch party, including erin fisher, who hasn't missed one since manny's opened five years ago. >> i think it is great to have an opportunity to share with other people who care about politics and also meet people who are making politics happen. >> reporter: manny opened the coffee shop and bookstore in the mission for people to gather together. >> we can sit at home and watch
1:40 am
it or we can gather together, share reactions, listen and enjoy. i am trying to make important moments in our politics enjoyable, fun and communal. >> reporter: the standing room only crowd reacted with cheers, laughs and, at times, booze. when the speech was over, many encouraged people to share their reactions. >> it was a powerful speech. i thought that he drew the line in the sand. as mentioned, the republicans fell all over themselves looking foolish. >> i think the president struck the right message around issues of public safety and police. he was clear that we need reform, and i think that that was a really strong message. >> all right, katie.
1:41 am
a lot of people seeming to have a good time there with a good environment, but i wonder, what was one of the moments in your mind that the crowd reacted to the most during the speech? >> reporter: it had to be the arguing back and forth between biden and the republicans over proposed cuts to medicare and social security. take a look. >> as we all apparently agree, social security and medicare is also off the books now, right? all right! we have got unanimity! >> the ability to get republicans to say they are not going to cut those programs is easily the biggest outcome of that speech. >> so this is big for you because you got the chance to test the waters in real time. i wonder, was there anything the people were surprised by or found unexpected? >> reporter: almost everyone we talked to said they did not expect biden to be as funny as he was, making the types of
1:42 am
jokes that he did. >> he was funny, he was feisty, you can tell of the granddaughter sat him down and said, okay. here is how you need to write this speech. >> an awful lot of what he was saying worked very effectively, diffusing a lot of tension, but also called out a number of issues. >> reporter: a number of people we talked to said his humor was effective, because it was a way for him to get his point across in a way that no one could misunderstand. >> all right, katie, thank you very much. it was certainly not a laughing matter for a lot of republicans. arkansas governor sara huckabee sanders delivered the gop rebuttal, and it did not pull any punches. she said biden had failed, she called him unfit to serve, she mentioned rising climb and inflation. >> at 40, i am the youngest governor in the country, and at 80, he is the oldest president in american history.
1:43 am
i am the first woman to leave my state and he is the first man to surrender his presidency to a woke mob that can't even tell you what a woman is. the dividing line in america is no longer between right or left. the choice is between normal or crazy. >> so she went on to say that it is time for a new generation of republican leadership. >> joining us tonight are the parents of tyre nichols. welcome. >> one of the more somber moments of tonight, the parents of tyre nichols were met with applause and a standing ovation at the state of the union. president biden mentioned nichols' death and made it his call for change. >> i know that most cops are decent and honorable people, the vast majority. and they risk their lives every time they put that shield on.
1:44 am
but what happened to tyree memphis happens too often. we have to do better. let's commit ourselves to making the words of his mother true. let's get something from this. >> mike thompson wasn't in the chamber tonight, because he was picked to be hakeem jeffries' designated survivor, but he did weigh in on gun control in the wake of the mass shooting in half moon bay and monterey park. >> i think he talked about gun violence prevention in a way that republicans could support. remember, republicans in the house voted with me on my bill to expand background checks. >> also in the gallery tonight, and unlikely duo. paul pelosi and music superstar bono sitting together. they were guests of first lady
1:45 am
joe biden. paul pelosi recovering after being attacked with a hammer in his home. congressman nancy pelosi appeared on cnn and talked about how her husband is doing. >> paul is doing fine. it will take him another few months to be normal, but he is strong and resilient. what it meant was that so many of my colleagues, of course the democrats but many republicans have been very prayerful and kind about this. some of them aren't, but most of them have been. when they responded to that it had some authenticity for me. now to a big international headline. time running out to find victims of the earthquake in turkey and syria.
