quote, finish the job as he delivered his second state of the union address. his appearance last night before a joint session of congress was the first since republicans took control of the house in the midterm elections. mr. biden touted his accomplishments while gop lawmakers occasionally booed. nicole d'antonio is in washington with more. nicole, good morning. >> reporter: hello, anne-marie. good morning to you. what stood out to me was hearing the president stress the importance of unity as he stood before a newly divided congress and as you'll see, there were some pretty tense moments during the night. >> the president of the united states. >> reporter: before a new divided congress -- >> speaker, i don't want to ruin your reputation but i look forward to working with you. [ laughter ] >> reporter: -- president biden issued a plea for unity. >> power for the sake of power and conflict for the sake of conflict gets us nowhere. >> reporter: he urged congress to help him finish the job on a number of key priorities starting with the economy. >> thanks to what you've done

we're creating american jobs but we have more to do but here at home inflation is coming down. >> reporter: as the parents of tyre nichols looked on, the president called on lawmakers to pass police reform. >> just as every cop when they pin on that badge in the morning has a right to be able to go home at night so does everybody else out there. our children have a right to come home safely. >> reporter: president biden also took a swipe at republicans on entitlement programs evoking boos. >> some republicans want medicare and social security to sunset. i'm not saying it's a majority. social security and medicare is off the books now, right? >> reporter: on foreign policy the president reiterated u.s. support for ukraine and took aim at china days after a suspected chinese spy balloon was shot down. >> if china threatens our sovereignty, we will act to protect our country, and we did. >> the biden administration seems more interested in woke

fantasies than the hard reality americans face every day. >> reporter: in her response, arkansas governor sarah huckabee sanders railed against what she called a left wing culture world and said they would hold the biden administration accountable. now, there was also this uncomfortable exchange before the state of the union address even got started. it was between senator mitt romney and representative george santos. when they met each other, romney told santos that he was an embarrassment saying he didn't belong in the capitol. of course, we know that santos has faced all sorts of controversy for admitting that he embellished parts of his life, but, anne-marie, it was an awkward way to start the evening. >> i can imagine. nicole d'antonio in washington. nicole, thank you. well, coming up on "cbs mornings," vice president kamala harris and republican senator john thune will be live to discuss president biden's state of the union address. overseas time is running out to find survivors of monday's massive earthquake in southern

turkey. the death toll there and in neighboring syria climbed to mo rescuers continue to search for people buried under the rubble as the end of a critical three-day time frame to find people alive nears. there are amazing stories of survival. chris livesay is in turkey. >> reporter: in an instant, homes transformed into tombs and then life at its most vulnerable. a baby somehow able to survive. in syria a mother gives birth to a baby while trapped beneath the rubble. rescuers were able to save the newborn girl. her umbilical cord still attached but couldn't reach the mother in time. astonishing scenes that push rescuers to continue the search like here in the turkish city of adana. more than 100 people once lived in this building

that's been reduced to dust. rescuers tell us they pulled 35 people dead from the rubble, only one survivor, a little girl now in the icu, and the rescue effort goes on. onlookers and rescuers hope to find traces of their loved ones like ismet ozcan, a lawyer. as time goes by, do you have any hope that they're alive? >> if they're alive, and it's -- they have no water or something to eat to warm up their body, yeah, their chance is decreasing. >> reporter: but volunteers are desperate to help like those flooding istanbul's airport. more than 20,000 are already racing to find life, however, getting to the devastated areas amid more than 300 aftershocks over mangled roads covered in rubble, ice and snow could prove the difference between life and

death. the next three days are critical. that's what search and rescue efforts call the golden period when the chances are highest of finding signs of life beneath the rubble, and for the next three weeks, the president of turkey has declared it a national state of emergency in the devastated areas. chris livesay, cbs news, adana, turkey. well, seven more memphis police officers are under investigation in connection with the brutal beating of tyre nichols. nichols died three days after he was beaten by officers following a traffic stop last month. officials say the additional officers are being investigated for possible policy violations. six officers have been fired including five charged with second-degree murder. in newly released documents, police say one of those officers took photos of nichols after he was beaten and shared them with other officers and an acquaintance. a united airlines flight

from san diego to newark, new jersey, was forced to turn around shortly after takeoff yesterday when a passenger's external laptop battery pack caught fire in the cabin. four people suffered smoke inhalation. as carter evans tells us, quick-thinking crew members kept the flames from spreading. >> reporter: flames broke out just moments after united flight 2664 took off from san diego. >> there was a gentleman, his bag was smoking, and he threw something out on the ground, and it was a battery charger, a pack or something like that from his laptop, and it burst into fire. >> i hear somebody yell, fire. i look forward and saw that -- i could see the glow. >> reporter: the boeing 737 with 159 passengers on board was in the air for a total of 11 minutes. it was headed to newark international before returning to the airport as smoke began filling the cabin. >> some were gasping, screaming. the guy next to me ran to the back of the plane.

the flight attendants were grabbing fire extinguishers and running to the front. >> reporter: since 2006 there have been at least 414 incidents of lithium batteries catching fire or overheating on airplanes in the u.s., 49 involving laptos. here's what it looks like when one of those batteries explodes. the demonstration shows how intense the fire can burn. on flight 2664 united confirms a customer's battery ignited, and the crew acted quickly to contain the device. the airline rebooked terrified passengers. >> i'm shaking. i'm shaking. >> reporter: united says several flight attendants were taken to the hospital as a precaution. they used a fireproof enclosure to smother the flames, and this is why lithium batteries are banned in checked luggage. you have to carry them on. carter evans, cbs news, los angeles. the u.s. military has shifted to an all underwater search for pieces of the chinese spy balloon that was shot down.

officials say navy and coast guard personnel have collected all the remnants they could that were floating on the surface. an american fighter jet shot the balloon down on saturday off the coast of south carolina after it floated over the u.s. for several days. sources tell cbs news that some of the debris has been sent to an fbi lab for analysis. and officials say they do not know when people living near the site of a train derailment on the ohio/pennsylvania border will be allowed to return home. evacuations were ordered after dozens of freight cars including ten carrying hazardous materials derailed friday in a fiery wreck. contractors continued to release toxic chemicals from the crash site yesterday, and officials say they are monitoring the air and water for contamination. well, coming up, miraculous escape. how two pilots were able to survive a plane crash in australia. and the new nba scoring leader, lebron james, makes history. this is the "cbs morning news." two pilots were able to walk away after their firefighting plane crashed in australia then burst into flames. officials say the converted boeing 737 went down monday in turbulent conditions shortly after dumping water and chemicals on a wildfire. the men believed to be canadian citizens suffered only minor injuries. authorities say it's the first serious incident involving a boeing 737 in australia and the cause of the crash is under investigation. well, a man pulls off a dangerous stunt in phoenix, and lebron james had a historic night. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. espn reports lebron james passed kareem abdul-jabbar to become the nba's all-time leading scorer. >> coming to the end of the third quarter, lebron james, his shot in history, and there it is. >> the los angeles lakers star

hit a jump shot with 10.9 seconds left in the third quarter of last night's game against oklahoma city to break the record. it gave james a career total of 38,388 points breaking abdul-jabbar's nearly four-decade-old record. abdul-jabbar, who was at the game, took part of a midgame ceremony. james entered the game needing 36 points to break the record. and "the arizona republic" says a man was arrested after he scaled the 40-story chase tower in downtown phoenix. police arrested the 23-year-old professional climber on the roof of the city's tallest building yesterday after he completed the free climb. he was charged with trespassing and criminal nuisance. the man said he scaled the building in support of anti-abortion rights groups. still to come, the latest tech company trimming its workforce. just how many jobs zoom is cutting after expanding during the pandemic.

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. bed bath & beyond is closing more stores and the video conferencing company zoom announced job cuts. shanelle kaul has those stories and more in today's "moneywatch" report. stocks soared after jerome powell said the u.s. economy entered the disinflationary process. the dow gained 265 points. nasdaq was up by 226, and the s&p 500 gained 52, and those numbers are a response to powell's expectation that we should see a significant decline in inflation this year. he warned, though, it's still early stages, and the central bank could impose more rate hikes. his speech in washington follows

land" is on its way to broadway. the 2016 film starring ryan gosling and emma stone follows an aspiring actress and jazz musician as they try to make it big in los angeles. the movie brought home six oscars. producers announced yesterday they have a team of oscar and tony award winners lined up to adapt the movie to the stage. no word yet, though, when the curtains will open. and we now know when barbra stre sreisand's much anticipated memoir will hit the book stores. "my name is barbra" will be released november 7th. in the book streisand tells her story from growing up in brooklyn to the early parts of her career and then eventually global stardom. the book is also set to reveal details about her relationships with famous friends ranging from marlon brando to madeleine albright. the publisher says the memoir is just like barbra, frank, funny, opinionated and charming. and it seems cupid is offering cannabis to its
