massive earthquake and the aftershocks that have hit turkey and syria has climbed to more than 16,000 people. rescue workers from more than two dozen countries are digging through the rubble of collapsed buildings in freezing conditions searching for survivors. experts say while time is running out, it is too soon to abandon hope. jarred hill is here in new york with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. it is said here that three days after an earthquake like this is the so-called golden period to find survivors. that passed yesterday, but we are still seeing something incredible stories of resilience in the rubble even as that death toll climbs. in the midst of tragedy, something amazing -- a baby found alive in the rubble in turkey, nearly 68 hours after an earthquake and aftershocks turned homes into crumbled crypts there and in syria. not far away, another search and

rescue team found four members of the same family alive under a collapsed building. while the urgent search for signs of life continues on the ground, survivors are desperate for help. international aid is setting up in remote parts of turkey. according to the white house the u.s. has sent more than 150 people on search and rescue teams to the country. the american military stationed in europe also on the ground there. >> as i told president erdogan when i called him immediately when the first quake hit, that the united states is offering our full support, full support. >> reporter: turkish president erdogan touring damage is acknowledging shortcomings in the initial response but says there's no preparing for a disaster this big. in the states, relatives of survivors and nonprofits are working to send supplies. >> so emotional now. when we see that support from around, it makes us more

emotional. today a lady just gave me $200 to send my mom. she said, "send this to your mom." >> reporter: help for syria harder to come by. hampered by the ongoing war there, the own road the u.n. authorized to carry supplies has been ripped apart by the earthquake. and this morning "reuters" is reporting there might be some hope there, as well. a convoy of six aid trucks is reportedly on the way to the border between turkey and syria hoping to cross over today to bring help to a lot of people who have been waiting for that. >> indeed. thank you so much. so there is new information about the chinese spy balloon that was shot down by a u.s. fighter jet off the coast of south carolina. the pentagon says the balloon was part of a chinese global surveillance program that's been going on for several years. david martin found out more about the american military response in an exclusive interview with defense secretary lloyd austin. >> reporter: the shoot-down happened on live tv.

now thanks to an amateur radio scanner, we know what the pilots were saying to each other. >> that is a -- t-kill the balloon is destroyed. >> it appears to be metal chaff clouds. definitely see metal breaking apart. >> reporter: after the shoot down lloyd austin tried to call his chinese counterpart to >> i put in a request to call, they did not accept that request. >> reporter: speaking publicly for first time about the chinese balloon, austin told cbs news his biggest worry was it would spy on u.s. nuclear forces located at bases across the country. >> all of our strategic assets we made sure that we were buttoned down and movement was limited so that we didn't expose any capability unnecessarily. >> reporter: by strategic assets you mean the nuclear force. >> uh-huh. >> reporter: it was part of a fleet of spy balloons based on the island of hainan which had

been flying over the said since 2019 when one circumnavigated the globe. >> there were three incidents a couple years ago that balloons over flew parts of the u.s. >> reporter: which parts? >> there were parts of texas and florida that the balloon flew over. >> reporter: in february of last year a balloon was spotted over the hawaiian islands, and jet fighters scrambled to inspect it. last week this balloon was spotted over costa rica. turns out chinese balloons have been violating airspace all over the world, much of the time without anyone noticing. until last week when everyone noticed. secretary austin says the navy has recovered the parts of the balloon that were lying on the surface and has mapped out the debris field where pieces of the cameras and antennas are lying on the ocean floor. he expects it will be days before they are all brought up. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon.

a day after his second "state of the union" address, president biden was asked about running for re-election during an interview on pbs. >> i think people have to just watch me. >> it sounds like you're running. >> i haven't made that decision. it's my intention, i think, but i haven't made that decision firmly yet. >> mr. biden was also asked about his back and forth with republicans who booed and shouted at him during the "state of the union." >> reporter: did you expect that kind of reaction? >> from the folks that did it, i was. the vast majority of republicans weren't that way. but there's still a significant element of what i call the maga republicans. >> house speaker kevin mccarthy was seen trying to quiet down f interrupted the president. mr. biden said mccarthy was very gracious. evacuated residents along the ohio/pennsylvania border were given the okay to return home.

a freight train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed in ohio last friday. hundreds of people were evacuated when officials conducted a controlled release of toxic chemicals into the air to reduce the threat of an explosion. authorities said air and water testing indicated it was safe for people to head home. former twitter executives told a republican-led house committee they made a mistake by blocking tweets about a laptop reportedly belonging to president biden's son hunter. during yesterday's hearing, republicans accused twitter of in government officials and the biden campaign to suppress a "new york post" story about a laptop weeks before the 2020 election. former executives denied that saying they had believed the "post" story contained hacked material. one executive compared it to 2016 when russia hacked the democratic national committee emails and leaked them on social media. >> i believe twitter erred in this case because we wanted to

avoid repeating the mistakes of 2016. >> the white house called yesterday's hearing a bizarre political stunt. pennsylvania senator john fetterman is in a washington, d.c., hospital after feeling lightheaded after a democratic retreat. last year he suffered a stroke during his campaign. his office said he was taken to the hospital where initial tests did not show evidence of a new stroke for the 53-year-old. doctors were running more tests and keeping fetterman in the hospital overnight for observation. in south carolina, the double murder trial of alex murdaugh was interrupted yesterday when the judge abruptly announced everyone needed to leave the courtroom. >> ladies and gentlemen, we have to evacuate the building at this time. so we'll be in recess until we discover what's going on. >> authorities said a bomb threat had been called in. everyone was allowed back about

"axios" reports the suspect in the 2019 mass shooting at a walmart in el paso, texas, pleaded guilty to 90 federal hate crimes and firearms charges. patrick crusius is accused of killing 23 people at the store. officials say he admitted to targeting what he believed to be hispanic immigrants. he changed his plea to guilty

after federal prosecutors said they would not seek the death penalty. he pleaded not guilty to state capital murder charges in texas where he still faces the death penalty. "reuters" says a montreal city bus driver is facing first-degree murder charges after the vehicle rammed into a day care center. two 4-year-old children were killed yesterday in a montreal suburb. six others suffered non-life-threatening injuries. a witness said the 51 driver stepped out of the bus, ripped off his clothes, and started screaming. there's no word on a motive. and breaking over, "usa today" reports in a blockbuster trade the suns are acquiring 13 time nba all-star kevin durant. in addition the deal will send mikal bridges, cam johnson, jay crowder and four first-round picks to the brooklyn nets. also they will exchange a pick swap in 2028. durant had been with the nets

disney is the latest company to announce job cuts, and popular cleaning product. shanelle kaul has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: u.s. stocks tumbled wednesday as wall street realized interest rate hikes are probably here to stay. the dow jones lost 207 points, nasdaq was down 203, and the s&p 500 lost 46. disney is slashing 7,000 jobs or 3% of its global work force. the company says it's part of a broader plan to cut costs during a period of turmoil in the media industry. the savings will help pay shareholder dividends that were paused during the pandemic. fabuloso multipurpose products have been recalled. the consumer product safety commission says roughly 4.9 million bottles may contain a bacteria that could cause serious infection with those with weakened immune systems.
