a massive explosion rocks the san francisco neighborhood and leaves one person dead. the investigation that brought federal agents to the sunset. this is the late news. >> this is what is left of a home that was blown off the foundation and a huge explosion. investigators are trying to figure out why it happened. agents are looking around. the body was pulled from the rubble and another person being treated for severe burns. this happened in the sunset

district. the houses on 22nd avenue. the blast was so intense, it affected the entire block, blowing out windows of homes. the two homes next door were badly damaged. this is what it looked like after the explosion. the helicopter flew over while firefighters were there putting out hotspots. we are live on 22nd avenue. i know it has been a long process. what has been going on over the last few minutes. >> crews have been out here clearing debris. it is almost an empty lot where the explosion and fire first started. all but five families have been able to move back into their homes. neighbors who knew the family that lived at that homer devastated to hear that one person did not make it alive. >> reporter: this home quickly went up in flames after an explosion at around 9:30 this morning. neighbors say one woman came

out screaming and badly injured. >> the homeowners came running out. her back half was charred. her hair was charred and curled up. >> reporter: according to liz, homer's is at the house to take the home. disabled woman that she is the woman that didn't make it out alive. just around 6:30, search teams alerted crews to a body in the rubble. she lives in one of the five homes that remains evacuated. it was a sense of panic when she initially heard the explosion. >> when they started to come down, i said get in the house. i thought it was a bomb. it was a fire that i said get out of the house. >> reporter: carolyn was next door to the house that burned down. >> i heard a big boom and was knocked off my chair.

glass was flying out of the window in the door was busted. as i was leaving through the garage, i saw the fire coming. >> reporter: she's had her home is been red tagged. the blast was so strong that he felt their homes lift like an earthquake and it shattered the windows of homes in the neighborhood. it will take time to clean the damage and for some to be built, many are feeling lucky to be alive. >> i lost my livelihood in the second. >> a big part of the story earlier was getting everybody out and evacuating the neighborhood. what you know about the people that still can't go home? >> reporter: those that are homer asked to shelter in place. i talked with those folks and they said for tonight, we're going to stay with relatives and then decide where to go from there. police officers say they will be out here all night tonight

and into tomorrow. some residents are really concerned about possible looting because homes have been damaged. some of the doors are not locked. the officers will be here to keep an eye on the neighborhood. >> it is amazing that all that is going on. we still don't know what the cause of the explosion was. it is bringing up memories for a lot of people. another explosion and fire that happened in 1998. that is when dozens of fireworks at night it in someone's in basement. that fire injured 17 people. >> we can't look the other way when residents deserve better. >> she's only been the mayor for a couple of months. to a group of residents and former city leaders say they want her out.

they put out a petition. there hoping to get 9000 signatures to get a recall on the ballot in 2023. lee and supporters are pushing back. both sides are accusing the other of divisiveness and nasty politics. san mateo appears to be a city divided. >> reporter: it is hard to imagine the city council at the center of a heated political uprising. two groups are indeed facing off over the town's top official. a group led by five former san mateo mayors are pushing to recall the current mayor, accusing her of city politics, dishonesty and divisiveness. >> we need to let her go and get the mayor that will continue to build san mateo as a great city and not have the divisiveness. >> reporter: in december, city councils deadlocked when they could not come to an agreement on who should be the mayor. a weeklong power struggle ensued. lee said it should be her her

procedure. two new members wanted to fill a vacant council seat first. at one point kelly claimed she was pressured to trade her vote for a new councilmember for her appointment to the mentorship. her opponents are crying foul. >> tell us why he made the claims of illegal backdoor deals to effectively disqualify a highly qualified and respected city council candidate from being appointed and have provided no proof to city, staff or constituents when asked? >> reporter: the d.a. told us he is investigating claims of vote trading but is not investigating lee herself. mayor lee declined an on camera interview but wrote to us in a statement, this divisive and wasteful recall is based on falsehoods that will cost the city $1 million. i am focused on the real work of helping community access opportunities for affordable housing, getting emergency relief to flood victims, and post-pandemic economic recovery. it is clear that san mateo residents are divided on the
