this is the late news. >> this is what is left of a home that was blown off the foundation and a huge explosion. investigators are trying to figure out why it happened. agents are looking around. the body was pulled from the rubble and another person being treated for severe burns. this happened in the sunset district. the houses on 22nd avenue. the blast was so intense, it affected the entire block, blowing out windows of homes. the two homes next door were badly damaged. this is what it looked like after the explosion. the helicopter flew over while firefighters were there putting out hotspots. we are live on 22nd avenue.

i know it has been a long process. what has been going on over the last few minutes. crews been out heempty whera liesbeen able to move back into their homes. neighbors who knew the family that lived at that homer devastated to hear that one person did not make it alive. >> reporter: this home quickly went up in flames after an explosion at around 9:30 this morning. neighbors say one woman came out screaming and badly injured. >> the homeowners came running out. her back half was charred. her hair was charred and curled up. >> reporter: according to liz, homer's is at the house to take care of a disabled woman that lives inside the home.

she is the woman that didn't make it out alive. just around 6:30, search teams alerted crews to a body in the rubble. she lives in one of the five homes that remains evacuated. it was a sense of panic when she initially heard the explosion. >> when they started to come down, i said get in the house. i thought it was a bomb. it was a fire that i said get ou next door to the house that burned down. >> i heard a big boom and was knocked off my chair. glass was flying out of the window in the door was busted. as i was leaving through the garage, i saw the fire coming. >> reporter: she's had her home is been red tagged. the blast was so strong that he felt their homes lift like an earthquake and it shattered the windows of homes in the neighborhood. it will take time to clean the

damage and for some to be built, many are feeling lucky to be alive. >> i lost my livelihood in the second. >> a big part of the story earlier was getting everybody out and evacuating the neighborhood. what you know about the people that still can't go home? >> reporter: those that are homer asked to shelter in place. i talked with those folks and they said for tonight, we're going to stay with relatives and then decide where to go from there.officers say they wi be out here all night tonight and into tomorrow. some residents are really looting because homes have been damaged. some of the doors are not locked. the officers will be here to keep an eye on the neighborhood. >> it is amazing that all that is going on.

we still don't know what the cause of the explosion was. it is bringing up memories for a lot of people. another explosion and fire that happened in 1998. that is when dozens of fireworks at night it in someone's in basement. that fire injured 17 people. >> we can't look the other way when residents deserve better. >> she's only been the mayor for a couple of months. to a group of residents and former city leaders say they want her out. they put out a petition. there hoping to get 9000 signatures to get a recall on the ballot in 2023. lee and supporters are pushing back. both sides are accusing the other of divisiveness and nasty politics. san mateo appears to be a city divided. >> reporter: it is hard to imagine the city council at the center of a heated political uprising. two groups are indeed facing off over the town's top

official. a group led by five former san mateo mayors are pushing to recall the current mayor, accusing her of city politics, dishonesty and divisiveness. >> we need to let her go and get the mayor that will continue to build san mateo as a great city and not have the divisiveness. >> reporter: in december, city councils deadlocked when they could not come to an agreement on who should be the mayor. a weeklong power struggle ensued. lee said it should be her her procedure. two new members wanted to fill a vacant council seat first. at one point kelly claimed she was pressured to trade her vote for a new councilmember for her appointment to the mentorship. her opponents are crying foul. city council candidate fr being appointed and ty

they tried to leave and was dragged 50 feet across the ground, hitting her head multiple times. she was hospitalized in a coma. friends and family said she was taken off life support. we were at angel cakes today were customers were showing support and sorrow for her and family. >> i'm in oakland native. when i saw the news, about what happens to the owner, it was horrible. >> i figured if i bought cupcakes, it would support them. and continue praying for the owner. it is not fair. >> reporter: the bakery will stay open as jen would have wanted. her family said she did not believe in incarceration. if someone is arrested, they want to push for restorative justice. oakland police have not made any arrests.

is it possible to bring san francisco back to pre-pandemic life. the mayor said no. >> san francisco downtown, as we know it, is not coming back. you know what, that is okay. >> one of the more surprising lines from the state of the city address, she also touted plans to offer tax breaks to lower companies back to empty office towers. it is no secret that san francisco suffered since covid. officers were more than 25% empty in the fourth quarter of the year. we are almost at the end of the workweek. >> not yet though. >> reporter: it is an important we can. >> people have things to do. >> next weekend is presidents' day. we have a lot to keep eyes on. just back to february reality.

showers in the forecast. it will not be cold but the first chance of showers. the cooler air will be here throughout the day. the system is going to send additional cloud cover and stronger wind. that is where temperatures retreat to the mid to upper 50s. the shower chances arrived late tomorrow and may continue tomorrow night into the first half of saturday if the system churns overhead. the path, doesn't give access to much moisture at all. the rain chances are about 50 hapten 50 at best. we will see a lot of fog around the bay and the coast to start the day tomorrow. i don't think it will be a huge impact on the commute. the showers roll into the north bay by late tomorrow afternoon. showers late afternoon through tomorrow evening will be for the north bay, along the coast to may be a few hit or miss showers in san francisco and oakland. the activity will not climb over the hills and further in

the east bay or santa clara valley until later tomorrow night. tomorrow night into the first half of saturday, that is when the entire bay area has a chance of hit or miss shower activity. the swirl of everything rotating is not a guarantee that you will get rain. it is possible to be flexible with plans for the first half of the day. then we dry out on saturday afternoon and we will stay dry for the second half of the weekend. temperatures warming to above- average levels. look at the snow that will pick up in the sierra. good travel weather tomorrow and that a bit of fresh powder 3 to 6 inches on saturday. that will be out of the way. crews have plenty of time to catch up and improve condition sunday into monday. saturday, be prepared for slowdowns. it will not be treacherous but a little bit slow. the air quality should improve with a chance of showers. hayes on the horizon. plenty of yellow dots mixed in.

more green on the map once the showers move out. no widespread chances in the forecast, anytime soon. the rainfall outlook, looking at another chance monday into tuesday. that will not amount to a long. we will be waiting for the next round of widespread measurable rain. temperatures now, drop into the 40s to around 50 degrees. low to mid 40s around the bay and the coast. high temperatures tomorrow only warming up to mid to upper 50s. for most of us the warmest around 60. that is a big drop from where we were today. slightly below the average for february. basically the same temperatures on saturday. and we dry out completely. loaded mid-60s for a couple of days bringing a chance of showers back into the forecast. it is lower than a 50-50 chance at this point.
