the chances of finding people still alive in the freezing temperatures are dimming. so far more than 20,000 people have been killed. the u.s. has announced new aid. jarred hill is in new york with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. you know, experts are saying that it's the combination of factors here. the cold, the lack of food and water, plus the possible injuries that's shrinking this window to find survivors. at least three americans are confirmed dead, but we have seen people, children in particular, doing whatever they can to stay alive long enough to be rescued. new satellite images give a bird's eye view of the destruction from the deadly turkey-syria earthquakes. rescue workers from around the world including the u.s. continue the search for survivors. [ applause ] in gaziantep, turkey, joy after this 17-year-old was pulled from the rubble today. there was a brief pause for

relieved mother's embrace before he was placed in the ambulance. he later said he drank his own urine to survive 94 hours upper the rubble. further west in antakya, a 10-year-old girl was rescued after workers spent 32 hours clearing a path to get to her. from syria, new video has emerged with a closeup view of two little girls who were freed up from the rubble on wednesday. not every family has been so lucky. with many in mourning and preparing for the worst. >> we hope we can find people which is still alive. every hours is for us so hard. >> reporter: thursday the u.s. state department announced it will give $85 million to humanitarian relief efforts. concerned americans coast to coast have launched donation drives like this one at a virginia coffee shop. >> they need very, very warm clothes and also other basic items to survive these winter conditions.

>> reporter: with many survivors forced to camp in the bitter cold, the world health organization says the aftermath could prove more deadly than the earthquakes. so humanitarian aid has finally arrived across the border in syria, as well. the one u.n.-approved road was damaged in the quake, but the head of the world food program there says with the ongoing syrian civil war it is still hard to get people the help that they need. >> it is heartbreaking. thank you so much. sources tell cbs news that former vice president mike pence has been subpoenaed by the special counsel overseeing investigations into former president trump. the investigations involve trump's handling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, including the january 6th capitol attack. you may recall some rioters chanted "hang mike pence" as they stormed the capitol. pence's office and the special counsel's office declined to comment. the house voted unanimously

to condemn china for flying a spy balloon over the u.s. last week. it comes as we're learning new information about the chinese surveillance program that the biden administration says targeted dozens of countries. david martin has more on what ghly sophisticated spying the equipment it was carrying. >> reporter: as fbi evidence teams started shipping pieces of the balloon's wreckage off to the lab, u.s. officials said underwater pictures of the debris show the electronics it was carrying survived the fall from 60,000 feet mostly intact. they already have a good idea of what divers will find because before the balloon was shot down, spy planes flew by it, taking high-resolution photos of what officials described as an array of antennas for intercepting communications. >> i am so angry. i want to use other words, but i'm not going to.

>> you guys have to help me understand why this baby wasn't taken out long before. >> reporter: jon tester is the democratic senator from montana where the balloon hovered over a field of 150 silos housing intercontinental ballistic missiles. apparently trying to listen in on the communications used for the command and control of incentives. -- of nuclear weapons. >> i got a problem with the chinese balloon flying over my state, much less the rest of the country. >> reporter: soon after the balloon was spotted in the sky, a u.s. official said it stopped hovering over the missile field and proceeded to across the rest of the country, apparently abandoning its spy mission but still communicating with controllers back in china. according to u.s. officials, china has a fleet of high-altitude balloons which its military has used as a cheap alternative to satellites to fly over some 40 countries around the world. the search had to be suspended because of rough seas, but

officials say some of the parts already recovered have english writing and appear to have been manufactured in the west. the state department is considering imposing sanctions on the maker of the balloon. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. more than a month after experiencing a system-wide meltdown that stranded millions travelers during the holidays, southwest airlines had a bumpy ride on capitol hill. a senate committee grilled an executive who apologized and said the airlineko killion repo. >> reporter: a trip to go home for the holidays turned into a travel nightmare for hope grandin and her boyfriend. >> we were not able to get to memphis for christmas. we were stuck in a hotel on the phone with family members, you know, crying. >> reporter: faced with long hold times and a crashed app, the seattle couple was among two million passengers impacted by a widespread southwest airlines disruption at the end of december.

>> let me be clear, we messed up. >> reporter: chief operating officer andrew waterson told the senate commerce committee the issue was caused by a cascade of problems starting with a severe winter storm that impacted hubs in denver and chicago that overwhelmed network operations and ultimately forced the airline to cancel nearly 17,000 flights. can you guarantee that this won't happen again? >> we will do everything we can to make sure this doesn't happen again. we won't spare any expense. >> reporter: the head of southwest's pilot's union said its warnings to the airlines went ignored. >> management did not listen to its pilots and frontline employees who saw this coming. >> reporter: southwest has and returned every lost bag except about 200 that are unidentified. was their apology sufficient? >> ultimately it's going to be the customers that make that decision. >> reporter: while texas senator cruz said congress should take a

hands-off approach -- >> i don't think there's a role for government regulating fees, deciding how many drink coupons a customer gets. >> reporter: committee chairman maria cantwell believes there's more washington could do. >> we will be thinking of legislative alternatives. we don't ever want to see consumers stranded for four days without options. >> reporter: senator cantwell says that may include strengthening consumer protections, and southwest will cut bonuses because of the mishap and will implement a new software fix to prevent another breakdown which so far has cost the airline at least $800 million. nikole killion, cbs news, capitol hill. and now to south carolina and the murder trial of former attorney alex murdaugh. a lawyer who worked with murdaugh testified he trusted him despite an unusual request on how to split fees in an accident case. the lawyer said murdaugh asked to have the almost $800,000 fee deposited directly into his

buffalo bills player damar hamlin was brought on stage at the nfl honors in arizona. they were recognized for reviving him after his cardiac arrest last month. in an emotional moment, hamlin made a surprise appearance to express his gratitude. >> and a special thank you to everyone on this stage for everything they did for me, and thank you everyone around the country and around the world who prayed for me and hoped for me. the journey will continue. [ applause ] >> hamlin also said god's plan was to have a purpose greater than any gain in this world. former nfl players are suing roger goodell, and there's an update on pennsylvania senator john fetterman. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "pittsburgh post-gazette" reports fetterman remains hospitalized. the 53-year-old was taken to a hospital wednesday after feeling lightheaded during a senate democratic retreat in washington. a spokesman said tests show fetterman did not have a new

stroke, but he is being monitored for signs of a seizure. he suffered a stroke last may during his campaign and also had surgery to implant a pacemaker with a defibrillator. and "the new york times" says ten former nfl players filed a federal class-action lawsuit claiming they were shortchanged on disability benefits. they're accusing commissioner roger goodell and the disability board of denying payouts for injuries they sustained while playing. they also claim that doctors who examined players for the disability plan were rewarded with more cases when they denied claims. the nfl said its disability plan is fair. still will to come, a giant in pop music. we remember composer burt bacharach. this is the "cbs morning news." ♪

he con six grammys, three oscars, and an emmy. he was 94. another tech company announced big layoffs, and chick-fil-a is testing its first plant-based sandwich. shanelle kaul has stories and more in the cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks slumped for a second straight day thursday amid concerns interest rates will rise once again. the dow lost 249 points. the nasdaq was down 120. the s&p 500 lost 36. disney's ceo bob iger says he might not be interested in acquiring hulu. the company owns two-thirds of the service, and the two agreed in 2019 that disney could buy out the remaining third at fair market value starting in 2024. when asked about the potential acquisition, iger said everything is on the table. more tech layoffs to report. yahoo! plans to slash roughly 1,700 jobs or 20% of its work force by next year.
