about a potential connection to the explosion and fire at this san francisco home. what a day it has been. good afternoon. i'm reed cowan. right now, b.a.r.t. is recovering after a station shut down. that shut down, we now believe, may have a potential link to the deadly fire that collapsed that home in san francisco's sunset district. anne makovec joins me now to help sort this all out. >> let's start with b.a.r.t. things are getting back to normal. that is the good news. this all began when a box truck was transporting hazardous materials that driver smelled something weird and stopped by the daly city b.a.r.t. station to check it out. that is what haz-mat closed that area off and ordered everybody out of the station. neighboring balboa park and another b.a.r.t. station was closed while police and health officials took the necessary precautions. all three stations havea look a as it collects materials and assesses the danger earlier this afternoon. police and fire officials have

not confirmed that those hazardous materials came from the scene of yesterday fire in the sunset but earlier today, we did spot investigators loading several cylindrical tanks into a box van to transport evidence to a secure location. they all looked similar. as for the fire itself, that has been confirmed now that one person died in the sunset district home on 22nd avenue. from wild flames and a massive plume of smoke to charred debris today. still no word on the cause of that explosion. agents from the atf and d.e.a. are now assisting in the investigation but we spoke with captain jonathan baxter earlier today about what has been found so far. >> this is part of the overhaul process where we broke the items out that could catch on fire. it is also part of the investigation. theyill look at things. they want to make sure they're

looking at everything when they are looking at what have started. >> a body was pulled out of the rubble last night with the help of cadaver dogs. two other people were hurt including a firefighter. that explosion blew out windows on several neighboring homes and on several cars parked nearby. we did speak with a neighbor who says that there was a home nurse at the house taking care of a disabled woman who does live inside that home and the neighbor fears that that woman is deceased but still, no official word on that victim's identity. >> thank you. the half moon bay mass shooting suspect is in court today and the judge right now is considering just how much all of us in the public should get to hear about the case as it progresses through the legal system. the defense requested a gag order. they also say they want a ban on cameras in the courtroom. the suspect, 66-year-old chunli zhao, is scheduled to enter a plea next thursday on seven counts of murder and one count of attempted murder in

the deadly rampage at a pair of mushroom farms. from there, we go to the north bay this afternoon. a collision between a that shows the scene near ting i hamilton parkway. we got calls out to try to figure out any information about the person in the car. we are told nobody upon the train got hurt. at last check, a bus bridge was operating between the downtown novato area and san rafael stations. trains are serving the other stations and up and running. let's go to alameda county. it is open to a pair of disaster recovery centers to people who suffered storm damage from last month's atmospheric rivers. county, state, and federal emergency services are there to connect people to resources. there is one in central oakland and another in dublin. the exact locations are there on your screen. we also have that on our website. they are open every day to help you out for the next two weeks. we know homelessness and addiction are among the most pressing challenges the city of san francisco faces right now and we also know it will

continue to face them in the years to come. it is a huge problem. our kenny choi takes us inciting a problem helping move some of the most vulnerable in the right direction. >> i got shot right here in the sternum with a 22. it hate my small intestines, liver, and my colon. when i got up, my first reaction to this was, let's go get a beer. >> reporter: christian perez a addicted li at spiraled out of control. he has found something to focus on. >> i like the creativity of it. i really do. i like the nervousness. you know what i mean? it means i am still learning. >> reporter: the 34-year-old is honing a newfound skill in the kitchen of salvation army's first culinary academy in san francisco. it is an intensive 10 week program five days a week. >> i able to get a footstool in life, if that makes sense. being in a new environment, the excitement level is high. >> reporter: chef timothy

tucker trains recovering addicts as part of a way out program. he says 8 out of 10 culinary graduates from other cities have secure jobs. >> it is a great way to focus on their own personal skills and focus on getting better. >> reporter: campus housing is a short drive away in soma. the director of the program shares his struggles and success with participants like christian is a recovering alcoholic himself. >> helping folks live up to their full potential, helping them over, whatever demons have haunted them and make new connections and new bonds and equip them with the tools they need to succeed. >> reporter: to keep residents accountable, staff administer breathalyzers and random drug tests. christian is eight months sober and counting. >> once i complete this program, i am able to go out and get a job myself. i will be able to drive myself.

>> reporter: the single father of four starts his day in prayer, grateful for a new beginning and a chance to reconnect with his children. >> i am very appreciative. this is where it pays off. this is where i am able to get something back. this is where i am doing it for myself and nobody but myself can take it from me. >> reporter: it is a clean start for christian, wiping away part of a dark past and taking the right steps for a brighter future. >> brighter future. nobody can take it from me. i love what he said. programs like this can be expanded and can add hundreds more beds to address the homelessness crisis where we live. the organization owns five properties and they can all be converted. it costs money so they are having a fundraising effort that is underway right now. as we mark like history

month, we reflect on the legacy of this man, charlie walker. he is the man known as the mayor of bayview hunters point in san francisco. he was just laid to rest. he died last month at the age of 89. walker led a massive effort to clean simpson beach after an oil spill became a successful entrepreneur and battled against racial discrimination every time he turned around. a movie was made about him last year. a funeral held at san francisco's third baptist church this morning brought out hundreds. celebrations for his life continue through 10:00 p.m. a bay area housing fight but this one is out on the water. >> how much rent do you pay? >> i don't pay any rent. >> that is a pretty unique -- >> it is the real last free ride. >> it might not be free much longer. the battle to try to get some people back on dry land. there are lessons a lot of us wish they had learned sooner. how an east bay teacher is

welcome back. trouble today for san francisco bay lyft. the rideshare company came in short of expectations for revenue. $975 million, that is well under the $1.09 billion that they forecast. today, lyft shares responded. they were down more than 36%. experts say lyft is having trouble competing with rival uber. a sort of housing battle is brewing in marin county. it has to do with dozens of so- called anger outs in the middle of richardson bay. the county says they are there illegally and they want them to move back to dry land and they have a ticking clock, three years to do it. we caught up with an artist who lives on one of these floating houses. >> my father used to bring me over here when i was a kid. one time, later on, i came over and i saw a guy walking down from the house boat dock and i said, that is what i want to do. i want to be one of those guys. >> houseboats are usually more to a dock.

dry land. what a great story. time for a look at our forecast with first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen. >> just-in-time, we have a chance of showers. we are looking at this storm system, squeezing the atmosphere over the bay area. the shower chance is are going to increase through the rest of this evening and into tonight. doppler shows a few showers making their way onshore in the northbay. this is a little bit more intense. it will be tracking towards san francisco and the peninsula within the next couple of hours so there may be a few showers out there for the evening commute. the bulk of the shower activity will hold off until later tonight. futurecast does show shower activity becoming more widespread. you can see everything pin wheeling around the center of the storm system as it drops north to south.

be flexible with any outdoor plans for the first part of the day but if you have some stuff you will want to get done, push it back to the afternoon. maybe a stray sprinkle or two as we clear out. clear skies tomorrow night. warmer temperatures as well. this will be a snow maker for the high sierra. if you are heading up that direction, do it as early as possible. the snow showers move in and it will be snowing for much of the day tomorrow. this will be light. it will not bring traffic to a halt but it is likely to slow it down. temperatures appropriately cool for any winter festivities. looking at the air-quality map, it has improved. the cold front that is helping to produce the showers has swept out some of the haze that was on the horizon. the next chance of showers is going to be pretty slight monday night into tuesday. it will bring in another wave

of cooler air and there was another chance of showers thursday night into friday. it is far from a guarantee of rain. these systems are moisture starved. they will not make any difference in the long- term drought. the clouds are building. temperatures in the mid to upper 50s which is where we expected to be at this time of day. a little bit below average. the blanket of clouds overhead, we should not be overly chilly. another cool day tomorrow. even the warmest spots will stay below 50. mid to upper 50s across the board and then we warm-up for the second half of the weekend. temperatures will hit the mid- 60s sunday and monday for most of the bay area were that next wave of cool air moves in just in time for valentine's day with a chance for a couple of showers. again, fairly few and far between. once that moves in, it has more staying power. it will stick around as we head to next week with that next chance of showers that looks like it will be hit or miss arriving by the end of next week as we head into

added a real-world technicality to the school's curriculum. among his students, he found an eager and enthusiastic audience. >> we get to learn about how to manage our money and how to manage our time and how to base our future off of what we are learning in the class. >> reporter: kelly plans to pursue a career in the medical field. >> i am completely in control of my life now. nobody can tell me what i can and can't do. only me. >> reporter: matthew burge plans to enlist in the army national guard, pursue an undergraduate degree in psychology and a masters in business. both students say the classes already pay dividends, helping them take control of their finances and their future. >> i won't rely on anybody else but myself, as a woman, especially as a black woman, to make sure you are independent and you have your stuff together. it is hard growing up in pittsburgh. >> reporter: each afternoon after classes gone, tracy cuts hair at his own barbershop, a journey that spans both the short drive from campus and his long road to financial
