deadly explosion, what we know about the person now behind bars and what may have been going on behind closed doors. this is the late news. on cbs news bay area. hello. we start with major breaking news on that deadly explosion in the sunset district that happened on thursday morning. and, for about the past day, we have been wondering what might of cause today and if anybody would be held responsible. our betty yu live tonight in sunset with new details on it. what have you learned? >> reporter: we just learn friday sfpd they arrested a 53- year-old resident for manslaughter, manufacturing drugs and two counts of child endangerment. now, many residents in this area are wondering just what was going on in that home. many suspected that the

explosion had something to do source with sfp said they suspect the suspect was making d haus his childhood home that is still owned by his grandparents. their tenant lives right next door to the home that exploded on thursday. the explosion and fire killed one woman and injured two people. including a firefighter. the tenant was not home at the time. like many neighbors, today, they are dealing with catastrophic damages and repairs as questions linger. >> i saw the canisters last night on the news, pictures of it. post friday one of the other residents in the area and obviously there was something going on there that was not something that i recommend doing in a residential neighborhood. and, i mean, you know, we saw fbi, dea, everyone out here yesterday kind of researching it.

so, there was something. yeah. just horrible. >> pg&e says the crews have not found gas leaks as federal partners are assisting in this investigation. >> so, we are hearing the rumors just like you are hearing the rumors. what is important for us is to look at the facts. everybody saw the tanks coming out of the house. there is definitely something that is unusual to see come out of an actual residential structure fire of any fire in any location. >> reporter: michael said his tenant did not notice any red flags. >> no. i mean, he never said anything to us. nothing suspicious. what do they say, hiding in plain sight, right? >> reporter: this neighbor who says her son that lives at the property did not know much about his neighbors. >> it is san francisco. it is a city. and, you don't really get to know the people around you. it is not like you live in a big apartment building where you might get to know your neighbors. >> it seems to be there were no

unusual comings and goings in the house. >> yeah. yeah. >> reporter: the power of the blast is evident up and down the block. it blew this door right off of its hinges at a home across the street and shattered multiple windows. >> the house that i grew up in, just, to just, in shreds. soot, debris everywhere. it is just, it is hard. it is hard. >> reporter: and, a source with sfpd says when the officers called the suspect tonight he then turned himself in. also, adding that several neighbors in the area told the police officers that they could smell marijuana coming from this residence long before that explosion. we are also learning that the caretaker of the woman who passed away was doing laundry just before that explosion. she had apparently just started the dryer just before the blast. >> oh my gosh. so scary. a unfortunate situation, thank

you for all of that reporting. appreciate you very much. what also has been so devastating about the explosion is that some of the neighbors, right next door to that house, lost almost everything. our crew got a look inside earlier today. we show you what a long road ahead it will be for one family that has to start all . >> if you pull me in. . [ inaudible ] >> they were able to take me to the back of the house downstairs to grab the coats. >> reporter: just one look at the inside of her house it is clear life is not going to be the same after the blast. at least not for awhile. >> i guess you need to see it. but t is red tagged. for sure, it is, the house is, it is in bad shape. not liveable any more.

>> we don't have all of this time. here put the in your backpack. >> reporter: today, her and her family had one job, all they had time to do. get their stuff out of their home as quickly as they could and leave. they had no idea when they would be able to come back. their bathtub was filled to the brim with wood and debris. so was their bathroom sink. the explosion was so strong it knocked out their ceiling, the wallpaper limp and hanging off of the walls. the blast ripped a hole in the dry wall of their bedroom. no part of their house was untouched. >> wow, unbelievable to see all of that damage. to think that was the house next door. and the investigation into the explosion also led to an hours long hazmat situation today in daly city. a white box van carrying evidence from the house to suddenly pull over. firefighters say canisters in the back of the truck might of started leaking. we were there earlier this morning at the

house when firefighters were loading gas cylinders and a blue barrel into that very van. around 9:00, while en route to the evidence storage area, the driver noticed something was wrong. >> one of the items that was being transported started to hiss. the driver pulled over, called 911, initiated a hazmat response from a substance within one of the cylinders collected for evidence. >> the intersection of john daley had to be close off. hazmat rush inside and the police used a robot with the bomb squad. eventually they capped the leak. the situation, also as you can imagine, made a mess of the b.a.r.t commute. the station close to the scene. they shutdown until 2:00 this afternoon. the streets were reopened later and the van was eventually tkrefp to the evidence storage area. okay, we are heading into the weekend. a busy weekend. a lot of plans being made

because of the super bowl. you would think they would be in door plans, no matter. does the rain time-out the right way for us? >> anything in the works for sunday looks fine. really, tomorrow afternoon, everything looks good. the first half of saturday we will have showers out there. showers throughout right now. the center of the storm system is farther out north, northwest. seeing scattered showers making their way through the bay area. as the system drops farther and farther south it is going to find more moisture to work with. the rain chances will go up the farther south you go. you will see a descent chance of scattered showers through the north bay heading through the rest of the night and tapering off through the morning. the rain chances are a little higher and hang on longer. around san francisco, oakland, close to a 50/50 chance and more than a trace of rainfall. similar rain chances for san jose in the santa clara valley. it will not amount to a lot. we are talking about low amounts. less than 1/10ths of all likelihood. a chance of rain. we will take whatever we get.

we have a few more chances in the seven-day forecast. we will check on that in a few minutes. >> okay, paul, thank you very much. a line around the block at a bakery owned by a woman killed in a robbery. why her friends say she would not have wanted her attacker to go to prison. you might be tired of paying $7 or $8 or $9 for eggs that you thought about getting your own hen, rent one.

the man charged in the half- moon bay massacre appear inside court today. the hearing was supposed to give the judge time to consider a gag order and media restrictions

in the case. the accused killer sat in the courtroom in his orange jumpsuit, seeming to sob, grabbing a tissue to dab his eyes, the judge asked for a break and then ruled for a gab order. the shooting rampage happened in january. there is a benefit concert to help people affected by the shooting. proceeds towards local nonprofits helping farmworkers. it starts at 7:00. tickets are $40. well, san francisco saying good-bye to the man known as the mayor of bay view hunter's point. charlie walker died late last month at the age of 89. today, friends, family, turning out to pay respects to the trail blazer. his granddaughter talked about why his influence stretched beyond the bay area's black community. >> to see your community come

out in this fashion that supports you, not even just a black community. when you fight for minority contracting you are fighting for all people of color. asian, latino f it was not for him chaining up those trucks, a lot of people would not have the public contract they have for him. it is an honor as we prepare to send him home the right way, not just this way but the right way, it is just a about glorious occasion. >> walker led a massive effort to clean up the beach after an oil spill and became a successful entrepreneur. he fought racial discrimination in the construction industry. the celebration of his life continued with a cocktail celebration. there was a line out the door today in oakland at angel cakes bakery. its owner died last night when she was taken off of life support. she was the victim of a violent robbery earlier in the week. her friends share the photo of

her. they are overwhelmed by all of the support for her. they also said that she would absolutely not want her attackers to go to prison. >> we know as horrifying as a crime that jen was a victim to that she would want to see us looking to transformative justice, to healing, rather than having her murder used to call for more policing and prisons. >> so far no one has been arrested for her killing. her friends have been raising money for her family and her partner and working to keep the bakery open. barricades are up tonight in the city tu ir lots of complaints t new barricades went up between 19th and 23rd streets. they are going to be up indefinitely to see if they detour further prostitution or if it pushes prostitution to another part of the mission. okay, paul is back again talking about our weather for the weekend. scattered showers? >> yeah, a few showers tonight.

tell not make any difference in terms of the long-term drought situation, a little rain. we will take whatever we can get. we will have a couple more chances farther down the line as well. the showers tonight adding up to less than 1/10th of an inch of rain in all likelihood. gusty winds. once things wind down by midday tomorrow we will clear out and it will be cool tomorrow. but, calm pattern taking over for the rest of the weekend with the warmer pattern as well. dry warm conditions in the forecast in the second half of the weekend. let's take a look at the first alert doplar. scattered showers out there. including some making their way through san francisco and starting across the bay. this will be light activity heading through the rest of tonight, future cast slows that you casee the swirl of the center of the storm system passing over head and enough cold air associated with this. you could see a little bit of snow in the higher peaks of the range around mount hamilton early tomorrow morning. the showers will wind down heading into early afternoon as the center slides farther to the south and drags what little

moisture it has associated with it along with. the clouds will clear out tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow evening. we will see clearer skies tomorrow night. throughout the day on sunday and to start the next workweek as well. this is going to be a snow maker for the high sierra. not a significant one. they will add up 2-4 inches of fresh powder. freshen up the slopes and just enough to slow things down on the roads, i-80 and u.s. 50. not seeing road closures or chain controls or coming like that. just enough snow to slow down your progress if you are heading up there. be patient if you are hitting the road tomorrow. back to the bay area's perspective. we will see it washing some pollen out of the atmosphere. good news if you are sensitive to alder or pwefrp pollen. back to medium high right away for sunday and monday with above average temperatures getting those plants and trees into pollen-producing modes. a chance of showers headlining our way on tuesday. that looks like it is going to be meager. it will not have much impact on the pollen

count overall. for substantial chances of rain, farther down the line. it shows a good chance wetter than normal conditions for most of the western u.s. but in the bay area. it would be welcomed. february is still a month that brings us good chances of rain f. we are close to average we are in good shape. temperatures right now in the 40s. steadily dropping through the night. not a lot. lower to middle 40s by early tomorrow morning and we will have a hard time warming up the first half of the day because of the clouds and the lingering showers. the cool air will make itself at home. upper 50s for the highs, warming up sunday, highs in the lower to middle 60s across the bay area. maybe a degree or so cooler on monday. nice, then, a sharper drop in temperatures with that next storm system. a slight chance of showers on tuesday. and that cool air will have more staying power. sticking arounded with, thursday, friday with another chance for light hit or misshowers in the forecast for the end of next week.

hold on, not so fast. >> this is coming two months after the carlos deal failed and the physical failed there. the warriors are now dealing with a medical issue that has left another deal in question. according to the athletic, gary payton failed his physical on friday after golden state discovered an abdominal injury that could force him to miss two to three months. he had been playing through pain and that information was not told to the warriors. it could nix the entire four-

team trade that included golden state trading. the team has until tomorrow to decide to go through with the trade or rescind it. to golf, tiger woods announced on friday he will play in next week's genesis invitational in los angeles. the 15-time major winner has played in just three tournaments since being seriously injured in a car wreck just two years ago. talk about not giving up on your hoop dreams, former san franciscoian scored his first bucket tonight of his nba career. he went undrafted but signed a 10 day contract with the miami heat after playing for their g-league team. and, another bay area college hoops product is getting some attention tonight. former santa clara guard, williams, throwing it down here. the rookie finished with 13

points and six assists and the thunder went over portland. earlier this week the santa center a team to support the rising star as the thunder took on the warriors. >> he is such a good dude. it was like id, a great experience for all of us to see somebody that, you know, played here at school with us and to make it to that level. >> it gives you that extra motivation and persuasion to be like, wow, i want to get to this point to be like there. >> it was a wonderful night for our basketball program and staff. even the night before the game he was here on camp us to see his buddies. he remains connected to our university, our team, and the guys that we have who played together with him the last couple of years. their friends. >> so, back to gary payton. because the deadline passed the league is not going to let the warriors make changes to the deal to make it sweeter for them now that they know about this injury.

some new pets and watch out for them while they are with you. of course, they help to put food on the table too,. >> i had a customer book a rental yesterday and she was like, it is all about the eggs. i got to have those eggs. >> he showed us some of the fresh eggs that had just been laid that morning. a daily delivery you can look forward to in the spring and summer when each hen usually lays one egg a day. they lay a few eggs a week in the fall and winter. you will not save money you will have a more reliable supply of eggs. >> i love eggs. i always loved eggs. >> reporter: kelly was his first customer. for her it was the chicken and the egg. she remembers having a chicken when she was seven years old and now as an adult she wanted to experience again along with the fresh eggs. >> having that connection with nature and living in the city. it was a really great sort of balance. >> she plans to have hens in her backyard permanently, soon.
