green. the kansas city chiefs are super bowl champions for the second time in four years. in the third highest scoring super bowl of all time, they beat the philadelphia eagles last night 38-35. the night also saw some big-time musical performances including one that brought a surprise. danya bacchus is in glendale, arizona, with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, wendy. it was a star-studded night here in glendale. a battle between two of the nfl's most spectacular teams with a nail-biting finish. in the end, only one is taking home the vince lombardi trophy -- oh, and rihanna made a major announcement during her halftime performance. [ cheers ] the kansas city chiefs are super bowl champions. >> how about those chiefs! >> reporter: quarterback patrick mahomes was the game's mvp. despite taking a hit on his recently injured ankle, mahomes led the team back from a

stapleton. the national anthem brought si rihna shoed fans to tears. her visible baby bump while cramming over a dozen hits into or high-flying halftime show. yes, i think a lot of people were definitely looking at the screen twice to double check to see if rihanna was, indeed, pregnant, which she did confirm. and when we talk about philly fans, this loss adds onto their heartbreak there. the city in the last six months lost the world series, the mls cup, and now the super bowl. wendy? >> tough for them, but it was an amazing game. danya bacchus in glendale, arizona. thanks. ahead on "cbs mornings," kansas city chiefs linebacker and super bowl champion nick bolton will be on to discuss his team's huge win last night. for the fourth time in a little more than a week a u.s. fighter jet shot down an aerial object.

the pentagon said president biden ordered the unidentified object to be shot down yesterday over lake huron near the border with canada. it follows other objects shot down over canada and the coast of alaska and south carolina. skyler henry has more. >> reporter: canadian prime minister justin trudeau doubled down on his decision to take out an unidentified object over the yukon on saturday. >> it represented a reasonable threat to civilian aircraft. so i gave the order to take it down. >> reporter: u.s. and canadian forces are now in recovery mode piecing together several objects that american fighter jets shot down. the u.s. downed an aerial object the size of a small car on friday over alaska. it landed on sea ice, and crews are still working to get answers on who owned it and what it was. >> the predominant concern by the president was the safety of flight issue at that altitude.

>> reporter: lawmakers who were critical over president biden's timing on shooting down a chinese spy balloon earlier this month say while they're demanding details on who's behind the latest objects, they're pleased with the response. >> we prefer them to be trigger happy than permissive. >> what's gone on the last two weeks or so, ten days, has been nothing short of craziness. and the military needs to have a plan to not only determine what's out there but determine the dangers to go with it. >> reporter: officials are on alert, temporarily shutting down the airspace over montana on saturday after concerns of radar anomaly near the canadian border. they said it was an unmanned object which was shot down over lake huron. senior administration officials here at the white house say they had no indication that the latest unmanned object had surveillance capabilities, but they are not ruling that out. they also said that the object didn't pose any military threat to anything on the ground. skyler henry, cbs news, the white house.

exactly one week ago a devastating earthquake shook turkey and syria, and the death toll has now surpassed 33,000. rescuers continue to pull survivors from the rubble. turkish officials began arresting people for the alleged shoddy and illegal construction of buildings that toppled. imtiaz tyab reports from turkey. >> reporter: these apocalyptic scenes are as far as the eye can see. as we drove through hatay, we couldn't find a single habitable building. for those whose lives were spared by the massive quake, life is now an unrelenting misery, especially for those desperately hoping their loved ones are somehow still alive. "my mother and sister are still under the rubble, and i can't reach them," says didem celik. "my soul is gone. they're dying under the rubble, and i'm dying here." as aid trickles in, the distribution has been slow and haphazard. for those looking for something warm to wear, donated clothes

are left in piles on the street. food, infant formula, and diapers are available in some areas, but none of it is a substitute for what's been lost. at one of the many makeshift tent cities, we meant nouri sinkoglu. he now shelters across the street from the apartment building he was raised in which is now in ruins. he tells us his parents were killed in the quake, and they've only found his mother's remains. how long can you live like this for? "everyone here is leaving," he says. "if we find my father, then we will leave, too, because there isn't a single building here left to live in." the mood over the past week has gone from shock to grief to anger. anger at their government who they say knew this area was vulnerable to powerful earthquakes and they say didn't do enough to protect the people. this man is smashing the logo of a prominent construction company. he's one of many who blame

shoddy building practices for the near-total devastation. turkish authorities have started arresting property developers and have issued arrest warrants for over 100 more. critics of president tayyip erdogan say he's trying to deflect blame from his government's major failings. not everyone is casting blame. he wants to appeal for help instead. "i'd like to speak to the american president, joe biden," he says. "let's please put politics aside and help the people of turkey." imtiaz tyab, cbs news. this morning parts of northern new zealand are under a state of emergency as cyclone gabrielle moves closer. tens of thousands lost power, hundreds of flights have been canceled, and residents are being told not to travel if possible. as much as ten inches of rain could fall in some places. wind gusts have hit 80 miles per hour. it comes two weeks after a record-breaking storm flooded

educational value." the board released the final curriculum this month with revisions it says were not based on florida's objections. out more money this year for super bowl festivities. matt pieper has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: it was a mixed day friday to end the week on wall street closing out their worst week since december. the dow gained 169, nasdaq lost 71, the s&p 500 up 8. all eyes on meta as the parent company of facebook and instagram might look to hand out more pink slips. reports are that the culture's delayed finalizing the budgets of multiple teams as it prepares a fresh round of job cuts. it had cut more than 11,000 jobs or 13% of its work force back in november. ceo mark zuckerberg earlier this month said 2023 would be the year of efficiency. ford is reportedly set to announce a $3.5 billion battery plant in michigan. the automaker said it wanted to build a lithium ion phosphate plant, and this one with a chinese partner.
