shooter who went on a shooting rampage overnight. the suspect shot and killed himself as he was confronted by police off campus in nearby lancing. >> that 43-year-old male is not affiliated in any way with michigan state university. he's not a student, faculty, staff, and we have no idea why he came to campus to do this. >> reporter: a source tells cbs news multiple magazines and two guns were found with the suspect, though, police have not confirmed those details. police swarmed the campus within minutes of the first reports of an active shooter just after 8:00 last night. authorities say the victims were found in an academic building and a student union, both buildings open to the public. this video shows students fleeing acres dining hall as police arrived. >> when we ran out, there were cops there, and they told us to go lie in a field. >> reporter: state, local, and federal authorities assisted in it.
4:33 am
they are working around the clock to figure out why it's happening. >> we're a community that's knit together by each other, and we will hold each other up. >> reporter: all campus activities including sporting events are suspended for the next two days. local k through 12 schools in east lansing, michigan, are also closed again. now, again, while police say the threat is over, msu's interim president said these two days would give the school community time to think and grieve and come together. anne-marie, back to you. >> jarred hill in new york. well, one man was killed and eight other people hurt including a police officer when the drive over a u-haul truck swerved onto sidewalks in brooklyn, new york. surveillance video shows the rental truck hitting one person on a scooter yesterday. the driver then plowed into pedestrians on sidewalks in what police call a violent rampage. one man is seen diving to get out of the way as the truck was pursued by officers. the driver identified as

62-year-old weng sor was arrested after leading police on a more than three-mile chase. >> at this time we have no indication there is any terrorism involvement in this incident. >> well, the suspect's father says his son has a history of mental illness and harmful behavior. and there's new information about the unidentified object shot down over canada and the u.s. in recent days, but officials say they still do not know what they are or where they came from. the defense department says the pentagon has not recovered any debris from those objects. nancy cordes has more. >> reporter: a mystery on the sky causing confusion on the ground. >> what in the world is going on. >> reporter: the latest object appeared about a week after the chinese spy balloon was taken out after the south carolina coast. on friday an object roughly the size of a small car was shot

down over sea ice in northern remote alaska. on saturday it was a cylindrical object over canada's yukon territory, and on sunday, an octagonal object over lake huron in michigan. >> what was it? >> we're still trying to assess what it was. >> reporter: that won't be easy until debris from the objects can be recovered. >> we are searching what is a fairly large area. >> reporter: canadian prime minister justin trudeau. >> there is some sort of pattern in there, the fact that we're seeing this in a significant degree over the past week. >> reporter: unlike the chinese spy balloon, u.s. officials say these objects did not appear to be sending any communication signals or possess any maneuvering or propulsion capabilities. >> the likely high pocket the sis is that they were being moved by the purr veiling winds. >> reporter: but they did pose a
4:36 am
risk to civil aviation. >> i want to reassure americans these objects do not present a military threat to anyone on the ground. >> reporter: the chinese government claimed that the u.s. had flown more than ten high-altitude balloons into their airspace since last year. u.s. officials quickly denied it. despite heavy seas, the navy has now recovered a 30- to 40-foot chunk of the chinese balloon's antenna array from the bottom of the atlantic ocean. as for the other mystery objects, u.s. officials have ruled out one possibility. >> there is no, again, no indication of aliens or extraterrestrial activity with these recent takedowns, and it was important for us to say that from here because we've been hearing a lot about it. >> reporter: after the spy balloon incident, the radar's system was adjusted to make it more sensitive, and officials say that's why they're suddenly detecting more objects.
4:37 am
but lawmaker want to know what the president's criteria will be for when to shoot an object down now that the u.s. is detecting so many of them. nancy cordes, cbs news, the white house. well, the death toll in syria from the catastrophic earthquake that hit more than a week ago has climbed to more than 37,000 people. the u.n. says that number could double. but as the search for survivors enters its final days, there are glimmers of hope in the vast ruins. imtiaz tyab reports from southern turkey. >> reporter: these are turkey's forgotten villages. nearly every home is damaged, next to no aid has arrived, and few here are expecting any help. further down the road, and we find a site that's hard to comprehend. miles away from the devastated cities, and look behind me. the earth has split open. what used to be an olive grove is now a canyon.
4:38 am
atilla taze grew up in the next village over. he still can't believe the force of the quake could tear this land into two. >> did you ever imagine you'd see something like this in your own backyard? the thought of such an earthquake never crossed our minds, he says. this is a nightmare. if a devastating earthquake could do this to farmland, it's no wonder so many buildings didn't stand a chance. but shoddy construction is also to blame. this man smashes the logo of a major developer he accuses of knowingly constructing homes that weren't earthquake-proof. turkish officials issued arrest warrant for over 3,100 people allegedly involved in buildings that collapsed. but the government is under fire for previously passing legislation that allowed hndreds of thousands of construct owners having their permits being forgiven for buildings that were not up to code.
4:39 am
now the buildings have turned to dust. while they're working through the ruins, there are still moments of extraordinary hope like when this 13-year-old boy was rescued from the rubble 182 hours after the quake first struck. the u.n. says the rescue phase of its mission is now over and will now instead focus on humanitarian needs, but other people we are speaking to say what they want is accountability from their leaders. imtiaz tyab, cbs news, turkey. coming up, parts of a special grand jury report on donald trump's alleged election interference in georgia will be released. what we might learn. this is the "cbs morning news." . what we might learn. this is the "cbs morning news." . so i'm taking zeposia, a once-daily pill. because i won't let uc stop me...from being me. zeposia can help people with uc achieve and maintain remission. and has been shown to reduce symptoms in as early as 2 weeks.
