turn a page, decades of political service coming to an end. senator diane feinstein says this will be her last term.

good afternoon. i'm reed cowan. california's longest serving senator will not seek your vote in 2024. we have a look at her political career, six decades breaking lots of class ceilings. >> quite a career. not over yet. she turns 90 in june. she is the oldest member of congt serving female senator in u.s. history. she broke barriers on many fronts, gender, reproductive rights, gun control, environmental protection and the first woman to serve as president as the san francisco board of supervisors in the 70s. the first female mayor of san francisco after the assassinations of george mass son knee and harvey milk. in 1992 she was the first woman elected to the u.s. senate. it was the year of the woman. feinstein was the first woman to head the senate intelligence committee and the first woman to serve as the

judiciary top democrat. she is known for reaching to republicans to find middle ground. >> she approached everything studiosly and carefully. she had passion that accompanied her knowledge -- detailed knowledge of the facts. she was able to convince people on both sides of the aisle go along with her on issue after issue after issue. >> reporter: other lawmakers taking to social media to give a nod to senator feinstein. scott weiner called her a trailblazer. we are proud of her in fran. adam schiff called her one of the finest legislators we have known. and katie porter saying she created path for women in politics that i am proud to follow. cue the next generation. nancy pelosi called her a titan in the u.s. senate. she will stay in congress through the end of her current term. several members of congress put names in to run for the

seat including representative schiff and porter who we heard from. >> thank you so much. as we mentioned, senator feinstein's political roots are in san francisco. who can forget this moment. >> both mayor moscone knee and supervisor harry milk have been shot and killed. the suspect is supervisor dan white. >> joining me live the poll analyst. astrailazer >> i have beedoing this a long time. that was before my time. i used to cover the city hall in san francisco. she used that experience.

there was a time when she was pushing for an assault weapon ban. larry craig said perhaps a gentle lady from california ought to learn more about firearms. feinstein shot back at him, sir, i went to a colleague's office and found him shot deed on the floor and reached out to take his pulse and a continuing weren't into a bullet hole. i know something about guns. >> she made that point and her argument. you know, her career meant a lot for female lawmakers coming through the rank. an add vow karat for women in political office. she had this to say in an interview with kate kelly. >> enormous shift in public opinion. that shift is now open to a woman's candidacy. i think not only as a vice president but i think as a presidential candidate. so, my daughter who is y

s age r rls ked womealover t world, really. >> she will have a hard time believing that there were only three senators in the u.s. senate when feinstein got there, especially growing up in the bay area. between feinstein and speaker pelosi and barbara boxer and the list goes on and on we are used to this. but she was a pioneer. i went into barbara boxer's office, the other california senator. she had a huge wall of pictures of californians that were senators before her. not just that they are all men but they have beards all of them. few exceptions. feinstein at this point has served longer than any senator in california history. she is now the image of what a california senator is. certainly for your daughter's generation. >> definitely so. let's talk about leg take see and how the passing of the

torch will happen. what of the democratic party likely looking to fill the seat. >> so, you heard some of the names, adam schiff, katie porter, barbara lee from the east bay talked about it. these are progressive democrats. they have different styles. they are all further to the left than feinstein is. one of her legacies will be as one of the remaining center rifts. she truly worked across party lines in a time when everyone says they want compromise but nobody wants to. feinstein showed the clip, the trauma of her first time being mayor of san francisco that you don't enflame things. she was appalled by donald trump who she called a jerk. you don't fire up a political body already fired up. she was a voice of seven terrorism. when obama and hillary clinton ended their battle in 2008, they settled it over a glass

of wine at feinstein's house in washington. >> fascinating. a look behind the scenes. i have a lot of people' will be studying her legacy. thank you for joining us at 3:00. in oakland, one day after we heard from business owners nearing a breaking point when it comes to crime, guess what, some response today. the mayor announced new enforcement efforts. her goal is to protect city businesses and communities. serious crimes including homicides and burglaries are down from this time last year. tell that to the people that call our newsroom saying i'm fed up. the mayor says she hears them and it's important to partner with businesses for better protection. >> this is not a new problem but a challenge. i know that we can rise to meet this challenge if we all come together. >> so, let's talk about coming together. oakland police will bring back walking officer patrols to the

city's business and shopping districts. that will likely help the woman you met on the broadcast yesterday. a new vehicle enforcement unit will help remove blighted vehicles from city streets where you see a lot of camping going on. then across the bridge to san francisco another mayor is announcing a proposal to give police $27 million. she says that money will pay the bill for officer overtime to get the job done. part of the plan to address staffing issues and the overall goal to make safer streets in san francisco. the proposal goes to the budget committee then the full board of supervisors. we will let you know how it turns out. top stories in the nation. investigators identified the gunman in the deadly shooting at michigan state university. they say 43-year-old anthony mcrae killed three students, injured five others on campus then took his own life during a confrontation with police. he has no known ties to the

university. let's talk about your wallet. the rate of u.s. inflation is slowing but not as fast as economists and you at home or the grocery store line hoped for. a new report from the bureau of labor statistics showed consumer prices went up 6.4% in the month of january, down slightly from 6.5% in december and down from 9% in june. progress just slow progress. let's talk politics. former south carolina governor nikki haley just announced she will take on donald trump running for president in 2024. head to head in the republican party. she is 51 years old, the daughter of indian immigrants and the first major challenger. who could take her on? on the democratic side it's expected president joe biden will make good on his plans to seek re-election in 2024 but not a lot of talk on the

democrats. still ahead, he is known for leading oakland's biggest church but never thought he would be a preacher. >> i grew up in the streets. i grew up being a thug and criminal. >> as we celebrate black history month, we get back to meeting and getting to know bob jackson serving his community. a blustery valentine's day out there. the wind is responsible for that and we will track the rest of the showers.

welcome back. as we celebrate black history month we are highlighting a familiar face in oakland. chances are you met bishop bob jackson. he spent decades to stop gun violence and the bitter gap between law enforce. and the black community and getting recognition from the president. instead of complaining about oakland's problem, he is stepping forward trying to be the solution. >> reporter: the passion, the energy, the emotions. this is how bishop bob jackson

brings down the house. >> i surrender. >> reporter: bishop bob is an unlikely preacher. >> i didn't grow up in the church. i grew up in the street. i grew up being a thug and criminal. they called me dirty red. >> reporter: a drug user, alcoholic and spent time in a military jail. he keeps his picture in his office to remind himself to stay grounded. >> this guy was part of the problem in this city. and now god has blessed me to be a part of the solution. >> reporter: he credits his faith for his transformation. he became a christian at 31. seven years later in 1984, he and his wife opened a small church with 13 members. >> these the first church right here, 5927 foothills boulevard. there i am standing there just received the keys. >> reporter: today it is the biggest church in oakland with

close to 4,000 members. his story could have ended there but he said god had bigger plans for him. about 15 years ago he noticed a troubling trend. >> members of the church began to leave like the city was on fire. almost impossible for them to live here. many moved out of oakland. a tremendous black flight. >> reporter: the housing crisis turned the preacher into a builder. >> no thought i would be doing what i'm doing. >> reporter: he partnered with the city and developers to break ground on the first affordable housing complex at 9400 international boulevard. families moved into the 59 unit complex next year. >> family unit. one, two and three bedrooms. >> reporter: across the street from the first building they are about to finish the second housing complex with 55,000

units. >> 600 applied for this one. that shows you the need for affordable housing. >> reporter: about 30 years ago he started the men of valor academy at their old church. >> i still had development skills that i needed, working, how to work and keep a job and talk to people. >> reporter: today the program has 68 formerly incarcerated men. they live in dorms, attend life skill classes and learn different trades through on site job training. >> they feed me three times a day, somewhere to show. excellent employees to help with job resources and job placement. >> reporter: he launched oakland's ok program that mentors a couple of hundred black youth. oakland police officers serve as program coordinators and

work with students to improve their grades and breakdown fears of law enforcement. >> walk them through the education. keeping them in school, getting them the clothes, shoes, whatever they needed to stay in school. >> reporter: a few months ago, president joe biden recognized him with one of the highest civilian honors, the president's lifetime achievement award. >> the largest thing that happened to me in my life. i'm still pinching myself. >> reporter: at 77 years old he is planning the next project. >> you need to get your feet back on the ground. >> reporter: he intends to turn this large property into a one stop homeless shelter. from transitional housing to substance abuse training. >> god is not telling me to slow down. there is still work to do. >> when do we want it? now. >> reporter: a lifetime of preaching and service with the focus on the black community. >> somebody give god praise. coming up at 5:00, meet a

black female winemaker on valentine's day appropriately placed. she is changing the game in more than one way. time for a look at the forecast with darren peck. >> cold out there. that is the main thing a lot of people noticed about today. there was a little bit of rain, not much but there was some. we caught it from the camera on top of the sales force building. you will see it show up on the left side of the screen. a brief shower as it moved across the east bay. some of us got light rain. most of us didn't. we all felt the cold and if we look at the numbers, this does not tell you the story. it's in the low to mid-50s today but the weed speeds tell you there is a windchill factor. 25 miles per hour gust pretty much wherever you go. that is what is making it feel cooler. feels like down in the low to mid-40s out there. you can see the system and pattern working down to the south. the showers coming to an end

for the most part now. if we put this in the futurecast and play it forward, whatever showers there are, in fact a light flurry falling on mount hamilton right now, very light, won't stick. but cold enough. it's coming. but it moves south in the futurecast from here. the important take way for the rest of your valentine's afternoon and evening, you don't have to factor in rain. the showers will come to an end. but you know you should bundle up. if we watch the winds, they won't be as strong as they are today. the winds never really turn off until tomorrow afternoon and then it will be lighter. 10 to 15 miles per hour breeze tomorrow afternoon. in between now and then, we still have to deal with the cold air and the morning lows that will get well down to around 32 in the north bay. and mid-30s for about everywhere else. a freeze warning tomorrow morning for. this primarily the valleys in the north bay. that includes the east bay hills and santa clara valley

but primarily down 101, south of san jose you will feel the cold air. look at the difference. 39 in the north bay valley today, for the morning. tomorrow about 10 colder than that. and it will get better by friday. the north bay valleys are the extreme. if we put everybody on here for a comparison how cold will your part of the bay be, not bad. mid 0s. daytime highs warm up to around 60. reduce the wind, tomorrow will feel a lot better than today. we will get grazed by a storm on friday. the next chance of rain there. if you watch it on the futurecast, it just wants to stay off the coast. that's a little too close for comfort. a chance of rain in the seven- day forecast on friday, not much but we have to keep that in there. that system has gone back and forth in the models. there is the possibility that we might see a shower on friday. then you can see on monday, presidents' day, we will be done with all that. and a good looking weekend, too.

welcome back. today small actions can make a huge difference in somebody's day. we take you to michigan. a sheriff's deputy was checking on a driver pulled over on the side of the road, routine, right in he asked if he was okay then went a step further. watch. >> is there anything i can do to help you. >> i could use a hug. >> i'll give you a hug. >> seems like you got a lot going on, man. it's all right. it's all right, man. it's all right. >> just a hug. but here is the back story. it saved a life, make all the difference. the deputy said he could tell something wasn't right because he has been there before, too. >> just because of my own personal experience i knew where he was coming from. the young man was hurting.

deep inside and i'm just glad that helped him out and set him on the right path to get everything in line. >> you just never know what somebody is going through, maybe on the side of the road, maybe next to you at this moment. so, the deputy gave him resources to get help to find somebody to talk to, even offered to be that person. he says he spoke to the man later, followed up and he is doing better. we celebrate that. bridge built. coming up,
