michigan state university, we are learning more about the three students killed. five other students were wounded in the attack at two separate buildings. there's also new information about the shooter's past. charlie demar has more from east lansing, michigan. >> reporter: michigan state university students received support from comfort dogs and each other as they mourn three classmates killed in monday's mass shooting. junior arielle anderson, an aspiring pediatrician, sophomore brian fraser, president of his fraternity, and junior alexandria verner, a talented athlete. a vigil honoring verner was held outside her high school last night. empathetic and compassionate. >> reporter: investigators are trying to figure out why a suspect with no affiliation to the university chose to target it. >> we don't have an answer now. and that's the honest truth. >> reporter: police say

43-year-old anthony mcrae began his rampage in an academic building killing two and othering others. he went to the student union killing one more. investigators say mcrae later turned the gun on himself as police were closing in. >> i never thought it would happen to me. >> reporter: this freshman sheltered with his girlfriend in a nearby library that night. >> mass shootings are becoming common, and it's just not an okay thing. we need to do something about it. >> reporter: students painted the words "how many more" on a campus landmark. >> words are not good enough. we must act, and we will. >> reporter: flags in michigan were lowered to half staff. classes at the university have been canceled for the remainder of the week. charlie demar, cbs news, east lansing, michigan. >> reporter: ohio governor mike dewine addressed residents' growing concerns about their health and environmental impact of a train derailment earlier this month. >> our environmental teams remain in east palestine where they're working directly with

the railroad and others to ensure the site is thoroughly cleaned up with no shortcuts. >> some people living in the area along the ohio/pennsylvania border have complained about sore throats and headaches after chemicals were released during a controlled burn of the derailed cars. some cars carried toxic materials. officials said a pollution plume in the ohio river does not pose a serious threat to people. they also said an estimated 3,500 fish have been killed. and now to the south carolina trial of former attorney alex murdaugh who's accused of killing his wife and son. yesterday his sister-in-law was the first close family member to testify. she said in the weeks after the murders in 2021 murdaugh displayed a pattern of strange behavior. she testified that he never talked to her about trying to find the murderer. she also said that he did not seem scared after the murders at his home. murdaugh has pleaded not guilty.

cbs news has learned the u.s. intelligence watched the chinese spy balloon that was shot down as it lifted off near china's south coast. that means the u.s. military had been tracking it for nearly a week before it entered american airspace last month. there's also new information about the three aerial objects spotted over the u.s. and canada. nancy cordes reports. >> reporter: the three objects shot down this weekend may have been harmless research balloons. that's now a leading theory for the intelligence community. >> there's strong consideration that these objects are indeed benign. >> reporter: they won't know for sure follow they find the debris. >> they're in difficult terrain. >> reporter: the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff described the challenge. one object came down in the arctic circle where it's minus 40 degrees. the second came down in hard-to-reach part of the canadian rockies. ver ose.d plunged into lake im

>> reporter: he defended the decision to scramble fighter jets to shoot them down and acknowledged that the first missile fired over lake huron missed its target. >> first shot missed. second shot hit. >> reporter: new cockpit audio reveals that even the pilots were perplexed by what they saw. >> i can see like lines coming down below. but i can't say anything below it. definitely smaller than a car. >> reporter: pentagon officials have offered intriguing descriptionses of the objects. one looked like a metallic drum. another was cylindrical and carried a tethered pay load. another was octagonal in shape with strings attached. >> what are they doing here? know who -- who sent them here? what are they doing here? gop senator argued it deserves more answers from the commander in chief who ordered the objects shot down. >> my phone's ringing off the wall, and we got a president of the united states not saying anything. >> reporter: we asked white house officials whether the

president has any plans to make public comments about these objects, and all they would say is he takes the situation seriously and continues to receive regular briefings. they did say that after checking with the faa they were able to rule out the possibility that any of these objects were connected to the u.s. government. nancy cordes, cbs news, the white house. >> governor and u.n. ambassador nikki haley became the first major challenger to former president donald trump for the 2024 republican nomination. >> i'm nikki haley, and i'm running for president. >> she made the announcement in a social media video calling for a new generation of leadership and touted her background as the daughter of in indian immigrants. it's aboutface for haley. two years ago she said she would not challenge trump for the nomination. overseas the earthquake death toll in turkey and syria has now climbed to more than 41,000.

this morning turkish media reported that a woman was pulled from the rubble alive more than nine days after the quake. in hard-hit syria, thousands of survivors are battling bitter cold and a lack of much-needed need. -- much-needed aid. imtiaz tyab traveled to the rebel-held territory there. >> reporter: these are syria's youngest earthquake survivors. tiny bodies, battered and bruised, but alive. this 5-year-old nearly didn't make it. this video of her trapped under the rubble with her little brother became a viral symbol of the tragedy. she can be heard pleading with rescuers saying, please, get me out of here. abdullah is being treated in the bed next to her. they both may have made it out alive, but their mom, dad, brothers, and sisters all died. this is their aunt -- how are you feeling with this terrible situation? "my heart is burning," she says.

if idlib's hospital is straining under the weight of so much pain, so, too, is the rest of the rebel-held territory. the need here is so great, but so little aid has come here to northern syria, and people are desperate. a desperation that is tangled up in the fault lines of syria's decade-long civil war. president al assad is trying to control all of the supply routes, and world leaders don't want to legitimize the regime they've sanctioned. a complex situation that stands in the way of helping the seriously injured like fatima whose leg had to be operated on. muhammad is her aunt who tells us her mother died in the quake. "we haven't told her about her mother yet, she keeps saying i'm hiding something, but i don't have the heart to tell her she's dead." the u.n. has reached a deal with president assad to open two border crossings to allow aid into syria's disaster zone.

"the st. louis post dispatch" reports a man who served nearly 28 years in prison was freed after a missouri judge overturned his murder conviction. >> ordered that the motion o the circuit attorney of the 22nd judicial circuit filed herein for the benefit of lamar johnson is granted. >> 50-year-old lamar johnson walked out of a st. louis courthouse yesterday to cheers. he had been sentenced to life in prison for the 1994 murder of a man. johnson said he was with his girlfriend at the time and has always maintained his innocence. a key witness later recanted his testimony, and another inmate confessed to the killing. the "associated press" says u.s. authorities arrested four more people in connection with the assassination of haitian president moise. >> agents arrested the four men on criminal complaints filed by my office that were unsealed today. this brings the number of defendants charged in the united states with roles in the assassination to 11. >> moise was shot 12 times at his home in haiti in 2021. prosecutors said one of the four people recently arrested is the owner of a miami area security company that allegedly hired
