people in ohio are demanding to know if they're safe almost two weeks after a train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed. frustrated and angry residents sought answers from state officials last night at a town hall meeting to find out if the air and water could be making them sick. they also want more information from the railroad company which did not show up citing safety concerns for its staff. roxana saberi has more. >> reporter: outrage is growing among residents in east palestine following the train derailment that spewed toxic chemicals and forced them from their homes for days. >> i've been coughing since we came back. >> reporter: some residents are complaining of rashes, sore throats, and respiratory problems. >> coming right up, another fish. there's hundreds of them up here. >> reporter: on top of the thousands of fish and other wildlife reported dead. >> the biggest concern i think is just the not knowing what it is that we're up against, what it is that we'll be up against in the future.

>> reporter: cbs news has learned that employees working on the train were concerned about what they say was excessive weight and length in the days before it derailed and burst into flames. >> fire department, report to the station for a fire in east palestine. >> reporter: according to employees familiar with the matter, the train broke down at least once before derailing on . in a statement, norfolk southern said the weight was uniform throughout with features to help reduce mechanical issues, and that a longer and heavier train used to run the route. in its investigation, the ntsb is focusing on an overheated wheel bearing that it says was close to failing. it has removed parts for analysis, but investigators can't get back to the site until the cars are fully decontaminated. on wednesday ohio's governor said test results on five wells came back indicating the town's water is safe to drink. officials from norfolk southern

said they would not attend a town hall meeting on wednesday night with residents citing the growing physical threat to their employees. roxana saberi, cbs news, new waterford, ohio. one man was killed and three others wounded in a shooting at a shopping mall in el paso, texas. police say two suspects were taken into custody after yesterday's shooting. two of the injured men were reported in critical condition. >> we heard the kids arguing, and then i looked at her, and then we heard shots fired. i ran to the restroom because i'm seven months pregnant. i was scared. i was in fear of my life. >> investigators say a weapon was recovered at the scene. it's unclear what led to the shooting. it took place across from a walmart where 23 people were killed in a mass shooting in 2019. we are expecting to learn more about the mass shooting at michigan state university later today as police offer an update. three students were killed

monday night and five others injured when a gunman who later took his own life opened fire. the victims were remembered last night during an on-campus vigil. jarred hill is here in new york with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. so many people showed up to michigan state's campus for this vigil last night. the students there are not just gathering to mourn the loss of life or the sense of security, they're demanding action. ♪ at michigan state university, strength and incredible sadness. thousands gathering two days after the horrific mass shooting. >> our darkest moments we need to find the light. sometimes it's in one another. >> reporter: it was msu junior kate and freshman lauren's first time back on campus. >> it's nice to see all the support that everyone has and just seeing the community come together. >> reporter: yesterday students could pick up things they left behind when escaping the student union, the second shooting location. >> i honestly do think he shot

at me and missed. >> reporter: jack gibson was working in the cafeteria there. he escaped, but his co-worker, brian fraser, didn't. fraser, arielle anderson, and alexandria verner were killed. >> i don't know why. none of us deserved that. >> reporter: a junior hospitality major was hurt, listed in critical condition, still in the hospital. her family started a gofundme saying that it will take months for the florida native to recover. >> we shouldn't have to live with this -- >> reporter: among the grief, anger. students held a peaceful sit-in at the capitol yesterday demanding action on gun reform. >> if nothing changes, it will continue. >> you're under arrest -- >> reporter: meanwhile, newly released video shows the 43-year-old suspect's arrest on a gun charge in 2019. police say he took his own life as officers confronted him after the shooting. today people will be allowed

back in the academic building where the shooting started to pick up things they left behind when running for safety. classes are expected to resume on monday. but a petition for that to be remote only has already gotten more than 10,000 signatures. a lot of people still hurt on that campus. >> i'm sure people are uneasy about heading back to campus. jarred hill in new york. thank you. >> of course. the white supremacist who shot and killed ten black people at a buffalo supermarket last year was sentenced to life in prison without parole. victims' families confronted the 19-year-old shooters for the first time during a hearing yesterday. many expressed anger while one relative had to be restrained as he lunged toward the gunman. jeff pegues has more. >> reporter: speaking directly to the man who murdered their loved ones, one after the other, they stepped forward. tamika harper lost her aunt. >> do i want you to die? no. i want you to stay alive. i want you to think about this every day of your life.

>> reporter: they denounced the shooting in which ten people ranging in age from 32 to 84 in the aisles of the tops supermarket. >> you are a cowardly racist. >> you planned this whole thing. you planned it. you put it on a video like it was a video game and watched it. i watched my sister-in-law get shot by you. >> reporter: the anger in the room was palpable. >> we're never going to -- >> reporter: eventually it spilled out into the open. one victim's relative held back by security trying to rush the gunman. investigators say the gunman, who didn't live in buffalo, is an avowed white supremacist. he live streamed the massacre after planning it for weeks. say that he specifically targeted the store and black people. he teared up at times and apologized. >> i'm very sorry for all the pain i've caused the victims and their families to suffer through. i'm very sorry for stealing the lives of your loved ones. >> reporter: the apology rings hollow with a family of

air on the side of the highway. officials say the helicopter was on a training mission. the cause of the crash is under investigation. and tens of millions of americans are under winter storm alerts this morning from colorado all the way to michigan. several states including codo and oklaha veeen hit with heavy snow and powerful in minnesota rescue efforts continued yesterday after more than 100 vehicles were stranded on a highway overnight. the national guard was called in to help. the storm is forecast to move across the southern plains to the great lakes. there is also a threat of tornadoes in the south and midwest. and overseas, survivors continue to be pulled from the rubble after last week's devastating earthquake in turkey. a mother and her two children were rescued from the ruins of an apartment block in turkey just yesterday. they were trapped for 228 hours after the earthquake hit. a rescuer said the mother asked what day it was when she was pulled out.

the "wall street journal" reports the acting head of the faa was questioned by senators about computer problems that grounded flights nationwide for nearly two hours in january. >> can a single screw-up ground air traffic nationwide? >> could i sit here today and tell you there will never be another issue on the system? no, sir, i cannot. >> acting chief billy nolen said the problem with the federal pilot alert system was caused by outdated technology and a contractor error. about 1,300 flights were canceled, and thousands were delayed. nolen said the faa is taking steps to avoid a repeat of the same issues that caused the computer meltdown. and "politico" says the department of justice will not charge florida republican congressman matt gaetz in its long-running sex trafficking investigation. gaetz's office and a lawyer for a witness said the doj is fedel thorits were looking
