people getting around. good evening, if you spent anymore time outside today you felt just how strong the wind was and even if you were outside you probably heard it. it has been causing major damage and trees have been falling over the bay area. right now upsetting breaking news. a 1-year-old baby is in critical condition after a falling redwood tree fell. we just spoke to the fire true. they said the tree snapped and

was darren who was here. did this pretty much map out the way we had anticipated? >> the gusts had been exceptionally strong late this afternoon into the evening. it's going to continue through the rest of the night. at least some good news while there's still going to be busy. let's switch over to the graphics. ocean beach recorded a 50 miles per hour wind gust. 61miles per hour at manetta san jose. it's easy to see why we saw so much damage over the area. it is still definitely breezy

out there. the wind advisory continues. this is where the strongest goi the wind advisory continues through 1:00 p.m. through the area. we also have a winter weather advisory that goes into effect at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. continues through 10:00 a.m. on thursday. this is the next round of moisture. light snowfall accumulation generally around 2,000 feet in elevation. the santa cruz mountains and hills. we're going to see a lower snow levels as well. darren will be back to talk about that in terms of lowering snow elevations and how this whole thing is going to play
11:04 pm
out. we're going to have another round of rain heading earlier this week. hopefully without the exceptional winds we saw today. >> the worse of it is now in the rear-view mirror. >> that's good. especially of us on hills in san francisco, we were clinging on today. earlier today, novato police asked people to shelter inlace. a ldgienan t tree national cemetery fell on to sneed lane. the lesla has been out there for a few hours. what has been going on there this evening? >> like you mentioned i'm standing out here next where this massive tree fell right here. take a look behind me.
11:05 pm
you can see and hear crews working on this. you can see an uprooted part of the gate with it. crews have been around here all this afternoon, this evening and thankfully this tree did not crash into any buildings but it is forcing drivers to find other ways to get home. one neighbor says he has seen trees leaning all day in this area. >> it's a little concerning. there's a lot of big trees around there neighborhood. the fact that massive tree could fall down. probably on the look out for a big massive tree. >> miguel says he lives just a few feet from here and it took him just an a few additional minutes to get home. but other people are saying they're glad to see the city is out here taking care of this
11:06 pm
very quickly. >> did they tell you when it should be cleared. do you have any eta on that? >> what i can tell you like i said, they have been working nonstop. we have not seen anyone leave this area. they said that you know as far as tonight goes, they don't plan to have this road open. we'll just have to wait and see about tomorrow too. >> we'll have to wait to see how that progress goes. a lot of people working very hard. thank you so much. >> this is a very dramatic scene. this is a tree that fell here in this area of free freemont. i'm actually standing on the wall that divided these two complexes. we're going to try to be careful. this is the real impact of what this complex looks like right now. trees all over this area and of
11:07 pm
course, some of the neighbors have been staying with other people. family members in other areas because they don't have a place to stay tonight. what we heard is that, the clean up is going to continue tomorrow. now today was a very, very stressful day for many of them. we were able to talk to one of them and there is what she said. >> as i turned into the complex, i noticed the trees were blowing like crazy. and the tree to the right i saw it just crashing down, falling. and i actually witnessed first time ever in my life. >> that you were there. >> that i had ever seen a tree right before my eyes just break and snap and just tumble. and it's going to get worse. >> that's right, and this is a tree that rachel is talking about. she lives on the other side.
11:08 pm
the other complex and this is what it looks like. this is incredible. it's a gigantic tree that fell dividing this two communities and of course we're going to keep you updated on how this goes. because the wind is not over. back to you in studio. >> that was our reporter jose martinez a little earlier this evening. the bay bridge was a huge mess at rush hour today after a tree fell there right across the westbound lane. and this was right before the tunnel on yerba buena avenue. this corvette was smashed by a tree and a light pole that came down with it. this was on clay and battery in the financial district. it was parked. thankfully nobody was inside of it at time. but i'm sure the owner is not happy about that one. and snow started falling in the sierra today. but believe it or not we could actually get some snow here in the bay area as well.
11:09 pm
first alert meteorologist d arren peck shows us where. >> forecasting snow is a unique thing and we rarely do it here in the sierra. if you look at thursday morning, we're going to have cold enough air in place that should it be precipitating at that point, you could potentially get snow as low as 900 feet. doesn't mean it's going to know then. because we don't have the precipitation lined up perfectly with that time frame. you could get a few light flurries that low. the more likely time frame comes a little bit later. once we get to friday. by then we have calmed the snow levels a little bit. by friday morning, we've got cold enough air for snow down to right around 1,900 feet in mount diablo. and we should have enough
11:10 pm

the peninsula is still recovering from those storms we had last month.
11:13 pm
we saw even more from this wind storm today. >> many different homeowners are dealing with trees down on their property. but this may be the worse one we've seen today. this is a tree that fell across this home here destroying this window, the roof, the ceiling, really just damaging this house and really in incredible fashion. this wasn't the only instance. there were trees down on cars. there were trees down on roadways. there were trees down in front yards and even leaning on houses. this is probably the worse example we have seen here in redwood city today. we do know the homeowner is okay. that's good news we have to report tonight. naturally very shaken up but they are safe. unfortunately their home has a lot of work ahead. >> that's for sure. check this out. the winds peeled off a roof in
11:14 pm
a building near redwood city i. all came down in one piece and landed on a car. looking live now at san jose and oakland. the wind has been shaking our camera all day. it's amazing that we were able to get a live picture earlier. we've put the worse behind us. we have something else to look forward to. snow. >> the possibility of snow dropping down to levels we rarely see in the bay area. if you had your finger crossed for snow in san francisco, it's not like a zero percent chance but a 1 or 2% chance. they're preparing for it in south southern california as well. they have plenty of windy conditions. the windy conditions are going to continue overnight. a few showers possible tomorrow. those are going to be few and
11:15 pm
far between. it's still going to be breezy even after the wind advisory expires. more widespread rain under way. late thursday into thursday night and early friday and that's going to be associated with those dropping snow levels that darre next talked a little earlier. down to 1,500 feet in elevation. i'm forecasting the elevation. let's talk about the wind first. each one of these icon s-s icons is a wind damage. dozens of these across the bay area just within the last 12 hours or so. this has been an exceptional wind. 30 to 40, 50-mile an hour wind gust is going to remain possible at the coast through tomorrow morning. the wind is going to stay strong through each tomorrow afternoon. gradually backing off as we
11:16 pm
head through the rest of the day tomorrow then the wind do relax to a much greater extent tomorrow into thursday. that's when our focus is going to be shifting to that approaching moisture. let's take a look at futurecast. a few hit and miss showers are possible. that's when you should pick up a snow but in the higher elevations. yowill see more widespread showers beginning mid-afternoon thursday. much more widespread rainfall thursday night. this is when the snow levels will be dropping down. even the possibility of thunderstorms thursday evening into thursday night producing small hail and the potential for gusty winds. but also that snow dropping down to around 1,500 feet. maybe even lower than that which brings it to the possibility of more significant snow accumulation for the santa cruz mountains, the santa cruz hills.
11:17 pm
that activity should be winding down as we head to midday on friday. we're talking about just enough to make potential mess of traffic through the santa cruz mountains. we could have slick conditions. talk about the potential for a couple of inches of snow even in the east bay hills. this is forecast model data. i would not count on more than 3-1/2 inches of rain. this is that kind of event where the snow levels do drop down. and of course inland, mendecino county and lake county are going to be squeezing that moisture out of the atmosphere. potentially 2-inches of rain for some of the higher elevations of the north bay. we're going to be monitoring all of this over the next
