tracking a massive winter storm that stretches coast to coast. more than 60 million americans across more than two dozen states are under winter weather alerts, and at least six states are under blizzard warnings. the alerts stretch from washington state to maine. snow is already falling in utah, but minneapolis is expected to get hit the hardest with the second biggest snowfall of all time. more than two feet of snow could fall in the city. and forecasters also are warning of gusty winds and ice which could cause blackouts. officials are urging people to get ready. >> we are preparing for what will likely be an historic snow event. we've got multiple departments and multiple jurisdictions, both minneapolis and st. paul, doing everything possible to make sure that we are prepared regardless of what ultimately happens. >> people heeding the precautions yesterday were out at the grocery store and at gas stations filling up their tanks

and breaking overnig virginia has elected the first black congresswoman in the state's history. democrat jennifer mcclellan defeated her republican opponent in a special election. she will replace the late democratic representative donald mceachin who died in november just weeks after being elected to a fourth term. the election will not change the balance of power in the house. and there's new information about possible criminal indictments in connection with the alleged election interference from former president donald trump and his allies are accused of in georgia. yesterday the forewoman of the special grand jury said they recommended indictments in the final report. she would not name people involved. when asked if trump was on the list, she said, quote, you're not going to be shocked. trump has denied doing anything wrong. president biden is set to meet with nato allies in poland today as the russian invasion of ukraine approaches the one-year mark. yesterday mr. biden delivered a

powerful speech in the polish capital reconfirming america's commitment to ukraine. it came the same day that a defiant vladimir putin spoke to the russian people. jarred hill is here in new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. you know, this has been a trip of reassurance for president biden. he said yesterday that the u.s. will never waver in ukraine. today he's focusing on a group of eastern european nations that have been worried about the fallout should russia take kyiv. on his final day in poland, president biden will meet with nato allies on the eastern flank, a group known as the bucharest nine, along with nato's secretary general. >> the united states will stand firmly by our commitments inside nato, inside article 5 commitments to defend one another if one another is attacked. >> hello, poland! >> reporter: yesterday the president delivered a defiant speech in warsaw declaring unwavering support of kyiv and nato while slamming russia's invasion of ukraine nearly one

year ago. >> this war was never a necessity. it's a tragedy. president putin chose this war. every day the war continues is his choice. >> reporter: just hours earlier, russian president vladimir putin addressed his supporters, blaming the west for the war in ukraine and suspending moscow's involvement in the last remaining nuclear arms reduction treaty with the u.s. >> it's unfortunate. frankly, we find it irresponsible for a modern nuclear power such as russia to pull out of this very significant key arms control agreement. >> reporter: but russia's foreign minister later said it would abide by the treaty. the united nations is urging cooperation. >> a world without nuclear arms control is a far more dangerous and unstable one with potentially catastrophic consequences. >> reporter: all the while a u.s. official tells cbs news russia carried out a failed intercontinental ballistic missile test on monday during president biden's visit to kyiv.

a spokesperson for the national security council is telling cbs news that the federal government will continue to monitor russia's nuclear posture, but so far there's no indication that putin is willing or preparing to use nuclear weapons in ukraine. >> jarred hill in new york. thank you very much. people in turkey and syria are facing new trauma after monday's 6.3-magnitude earthquake. rescuers pulled at least eight bodies from the rubble after the strong quake and aftershock rocked the region. it comes as a u.n. delegation visited northern syria yesterday to assess the damage caused by devastating earthquakes just two weeks ago. >> we came to see what the needs were. there's huge needs in shelter, in health. the need for fresh water, for sanitation, and of course removal of debris. >> survivors struggling in freezing conditions have criticized the u.n. delays.

the quake and aftershocks killed more than 47,000 people in turkey and syria. back home, dramatic moments in the trial of alex murdaugh. the son of the once-prominent attorney who's accused of killing his wife and youngest son took the stand yesterday. he described the night his mom and brother were killed. nikki battiste reports from the courthouse. >> reporter: on the stand, alex murdaugh's surviving son, buster, spoke publicly for the first time about the night his mother maggie and brother paul were found dead. he says he rushed to his father's side. >> what was his demeanor? >> he demeanor was -- he was destroyed. heartbroken. >> reporter: buster described his family as tight knit and murdaugh as a devoted father. prosecutors say he was manipulative and conned people out of millions for years. they claim murdaugh killed his wife and son in an attempt to distract from a decade of alleged financial crimes before they came to light as part of a separate civil case involving

his son paul who was charged with voting under the influence in a -- boating under the influence in a crash that killed a 19-year-old girl. police body camera from the night of the murder shows murdaugh suggesting the boat crash as the killer's motive. >> my son was in a boat wreck. he's been getting threats. i know that's what it is. >> reporter: before wrapping its case last week, the prosecution showed jurors footage of investigators questioning murdaugh two months after the murders. >> did you kill maggie? >> did i kill my wife? >> yes, sir. >> no, i didn't. >> reporter: prosecutors played video regarded by paul murdaugh just before his death showing his father wearing a different outfit from the white t-shirt and shorts he had on when police arrived. cbs news legal analyst rikki klieman -- >> so the prosecution may have been very, very effective, but it's getting to that motive that becomes the stretch. >> reporter: the defense team tells me they're considering putting alex murdaugh on the stand to testify. the defense also says they plan to rest their case on friday

"the new york times" reports many residents in east palestine, ohio, are skeptical of government tests for toxic chemicals and are seeking their own independent tests. residents are demanding answers about health risks after the toxic train derailment more than two weeks ago. pennsylvania's governor yesterday said norfolk southern's corporate greed and lack of care for residents was unacceptable. the epa has taken charge of the response to the disaster and ordered the rail company to pay for the cleanup. the "wall street journal" says supreme court justices expressed skepticism about holding youtube's parent company google liable for content. the court began listening to arguments yesterday over whether tech companies can be held accountable for some of the information and videos they are recommending to users. one case involves a 10-year-old girl who died in 2021 after taking part in a tiktok challenge.

her mother says tiktok's algorithms that recommend content led to her daughter's death. >> they are actually feeding into our children, they are sending them videos that they never even searched before. >> in a statement to cbs news, tiktok said dangerous challenges are strictly prohibited on our platform and promptly removed if found. "the washington post" says house speaker kevin mccarthy gave fox news host tucker carlson exclusive access to surveillance video from the january 6th attack on the capitol. mccarthy declined to comment on the unprecedented move to give carlson thousands of hours of video from the capitol that day. carlson has cast doubt on official accounts of what happened on january 6th. house democrats plan to meet today to discuss the impact of the video release. and still to come, new starbucks drinks with a savory twist. how the coffee giant found inspiration from italy's olive groves for its new beverages. groves for its new beverages.

nasdaq was down 294, and the s&p 500 lost 81 points. walmart and home depot delivered weaker than expected financial outlooks for this year. both companies say stubborn inflation and rising interest rates are causing consumers to watch their spending leaving many buying necessities instead of splurging on big-ticket items or expensive renovations. retailers macy's and nordstrom also set to report their fourth quarter earnings next week. starbucks is adding a more savory ingredient to its coffee. the coffee chain is rolling out a new line of beverages, each one made with a spoonful of extra virgin olive oil. the drinks are available in italy starting today with ambulance to launch in the uk, u.s., and japan later this year. and a new uk study reveals a large majority of companies who tried out a four-day workweek plan to stick with it.
