way across the country. nearly two feet of snow could fall in parts of minnesota and wisconsin. north dakota could see windchill temperatures of minus 50 degrees, and hundreds of thousands of people are without power around the great lakes. jarred hill is here in new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. a cold morning for a lot of folks in the middle of the country bracing for blizzard-like conditions. this latest bout of winter weather could be historic. despite predictions minnesota could get its second biggest snowfall on record by the end of the week, some residents are still skeptical. >> i think it will be fine. >> we'll be okay. >> just another winter. >> reporter: the minnesota national guard is bracing for a brutal one. it will deploy a susv to grab stranded drivers. >> there isn't a lot that the machine isn't able to get through or climb over. >> reporter: schools are closed throughout the heartland and upper midwest with snow also pummelling the dakotas, wisconsin, utah, and wyoming

where a state trooper narrowly escaped the path of a truck. the winter weather has shut down airports with more than 8,000 flights in the u.s. canceled or delayed yesterday according to flight aware. >> it's a disaster for myself, but you can't do anything more if the weather shows up like this. >> reporter: in michigan, icy conditions brought down power lines leaving thousands without electricity. as the system heads eastward, strong winds and a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain whipped through northern new york state overnight. while out west snow in parts of central california led to treacherous driving conditions and road closures. >> i'm trying to beat the storm. if i can't i'm going to have to find an alternate route. >> reporter: a rare blizzard warning for the mountains near los angeles could bring several feet of new snow to area ski resorts. starting tomorrow l.a. county is expected to be under its first blizzard warning since 1989.

it's in the mountains, but still, 1989. >> that's quite a record. chilly one. jarred hill in new york. thank you so much. now we have another developing story to tell you about. a florida tv reporter and a 9-year-old girl were shot and killed near the scene of another shooting hours earlier. it happened in an orlando suburb. shanelle kaul has the latest. >> reporter: good morning. this local journalist was killed while reporting on a woman who was murdered yesterday morning. this all happened in the pine hills neighborhood of orange county where police say a lone gunman was involved in three separate shootings. authorities say a spectrum news 13 crew was out covering the first shooting where a woman in her 20s was killed when they were ambushed in their unmarked news van by the same gunman. the second journalist, a tv news photographer, is in critical condition, and police say the gunman then walked to a nearby home, shooting a mother and her daughter.

the 9-year-old girl was killed. >> no one in our community, not a mother, not a 9-year-old, certainly not news professionals should become the victim of gun violence in our community. >> reporter: police have arrested and charged 19-year-old keith melvin moses. the motive here still unclear, but authorities expect to announce additional charges in the coming days. the identities of those victims also have not been released. back to you. >> all right. thank you very much. well, a preliminary report from the ntsb on the train derailment in ohio is due out today. transportation secretary pete buttigieg is also supposed to visit the site of the derailment in east palestine. yesterday former president donald trump made a trip to the village, as well, where he met with residents. he called the federal reserve response to the derailment a betrayal. meanwhile, the white house accused trump of watering down safety rules when he was president that could have prevented incidents like the one in ohio.

residents say that they hope that when politicians leave they won't be forgotten. >> i hope everything clears up and goes back to normal and everyone have their normal lives. >> the epa says rail operator norfolk southern has to pay for the cleanup, and it could be fined up to $70,000 a day if it does not. a texas man who attacked police and threatened representative alexandria ocasio-cortez was sentenced to more than three years in prison. prosecutors say 36-year-old garrett miller swarmed the capitol on january 6th, fought with police, and then later posted a social media threat to assassinate the congresswoman. he pleaded guilty to several charges and apologized. he's expected to serve another eight months after spending more than two years behind bars since his arrest. president biden is back in the u.s. this morning after a trip earlier this week to ukraine and poland. the president arrived at the white house last night.

he did not take any questions from reporters. mr. biden closed out the trip to europe yesterday working to shore up partnerships with our nato allies. it came even as vladimir putin was drawing closer to china for help as his invasion of ukraine nears the one-year mark. ed o'keefe reports from warsaw. >> reporter: president biden sought to assure the easternmost partners of nato that the u.s. would stand with them in a russian invasion. >> you know better than anyone what's at stake in this conflict. not just for ukraine but for the freedom of democracies throughout europe and around the world. >> reporter: the meeting capped a trip that began in dramatic fashion in kyiv. designed to reiterate american support for ukraine. it ended as a barrage of russian missiles hit the northeastern city of kharkiv. the war raging on. in moscow, president vladimir

putin rallied a large flag-waving crowd, praising courageous russian soldiers but making no mention of mounting casualties. putin also held talks with china's top envoy. u.s. officials voiced concern this week the chinese could supply lethal military aid to the russian army. >> we've made clear that that would cause a serious problem for us. >> reporter: both countries flexed their military might in drills off the south african coast. u.s. officials criticized putin's decision tuesday to suspend participation in the last remaining nuclear arms treaty between the two countries. asked about it, president biden had this to say -- >> big mistake. >> reporter: the arms treaty caps the number of nuclear war heads the u.s. and russia can have and allows for mutual inspections of nuclear programs. they stopped during the pandemic, and suspending them further means the u.s. would know even less about russia's nuclear capabilities and intentions. ed o'keefe, cbs news, warsaw, poland. we are getting a new look at

a clown and played a partially damaged guitar to entertain the kids at a tent city. the teacher found the guitar at the site of the demolished building. the southern baptist convention ousted a mega church, and there are new details about a plane crash in arkansas. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand". the "associated press" reports five people died in a small airplane crash in little rock, arkansas. the twin-engine plane crashed yesterday near a manufacturing plant killing all five people on board. the victims all worked for the same environmental consulting firm. they were heading to the site of a deadly explosion at a metals plant earlier this week in ohio. the cause of the crash is not yet known. the "los angeles times" says the man charged with murdering a los angeles catholic bishop confessed, according to prosecutors. bishop david o'connell was found shot to death at his home in southern california saturday. the suspect, 61-year-old handyman carlos medina, is the husband of o'connell's housekeeper.

he had done work at the bishop's home. >> charging mr. medina will never repair the tremendous harm that was caused by this act, but it does take one step closer to accountability. >> if convicted, medina faces 35 years to life in prison. officials have not disclosed a motive behind the killing. and "the new york times" says the southern baptist convention expelled southern california's saddleback church over having a female pastor. the executive committee of the nation's largest protestant denomination voted to expel the church on tuesday. the move is largely symbolic. saddleback is its second-largest congregation. it still operates as a church and was founded in 1980 by pastor and bestselling author rick warren. he retired last year and named a husband and wife as pastors. still to come, tiktok and drive. we're going to tell you about the apps that will soon be
