there is no word for this. it is not good. >> cold, rain, and snow. we have seen it all tonight in the bay area. thousands of people in the peninsula are suffering through it all in the dark. the outage that has dragged on for days. from kpix5, this is the late news with sara donchey. on cbs news bay area. >> hello, i'm sara donchey. we will get to those power outages in a minute. but tonight, we are seeing some really wild weather here. a lot of snow. you would think this video was shot in tahoe. nope, this is up in napa county. it is not just snow. the bay area is getting a little bit of everything from rain, hail, even thunder. looking live at the bay area bridges. the roads are very wet. if you have to get on the road, be careful.

paul, this kind of winter weather too much so you can't blame some people for trying to get out and enjoy it. >> if you live in a spot adjacent to where the snow fell, it is natural to want to get out and play. >> this was up in san jose. the hillsides. families going up there to play in the snow. there was enough on the ground which was key to make snowballs. >> and confuse the dogs. >> it was gorgeous in the santa cruz mountains. those big flakes are ideal for video and picture purposes. a lot of it melted but more is on the way. >> it was still nice to see it. it was windy and cold and snowy up on mount diablo. we are seeing a lot of snow falling up in the north bay. right? >> right. so the snow levels are dropping in the north bay first. because that's are where the core of the snow is coming from. we have seen snow accumulations

around cloverdale. this will continue pushing to the south. much of it has been a lot of rain. thunderstorms rolling through san francisco producing small hail. technically it is called graupel. it is soft hail, but still out of the storm. is falling i will enhance the radar. the storm that rolled through sacramento producing cloud to ground lightning strikes has pushed across the bay into the bay area. but there is more rain lining up just off the coast. more heavy rain includeing the potential for more cloud to ground lightning and nor of that small hail pushing back into san francisco down the peninsula. into marin county in the next 30 minutes or so. you can see the rain snow line creeping down in elevation getting awfully close to santa rosa. it has been snowing the past few hours. there is snow in the diablo range. and the santa clara hills. those snow levels still hovering around 2,000 feet. but they will be pushed further

and further down as the cold core of the storm system approaches from the north. still several hours of winds to go. more power outages will be possible as we head through the rest of tonight. the winds will die down. >> not comfortable to be outside tonight by any stretch of the imagination. >> no. deeply uncomfortable in fact. >> all right paul, thank you so much. the winter storm certainly not fun and games for everybody. a lot of people in east palo alto have been extremely frustrated. they were without power for days after those strong winds blew in tuesday and knockdown trees and power lines. late tonight, a lot of the lights were turned back on in east palo alto finally. this is a look at the pg&e outage map. you can see thousands of customers still in the dark. at this late hour. at one point today, chp had to shut down 101 in menlo park for a few hours for pg&e crews to

fix things there. they had to remove that big tree you see there. it fell over some power lines ad y ey to e the way across e fortunately, the freeway is back open. but the commute is treacherous. pg&e delayed complications closing 101. andrea nakano spoke to families in east palo alto. >> reporter: a lot of the people just coming out to their cars to charge their phone so they can get some information on when the power will come back on. many of the residents say the worst part about this has been living in the cold. >> no good. no good at all. there is no heat. the house is really cold. >> reporter: selena has been sitting on her couch in the dark with a blanket to keep warm. temperatures have dipped into the 30s overnight in east palo alto. for these residents, staying warm has been impossible. roderick patterson lives right

next door to the latu family. he says it is just as cold inside his house as it is outside. >> it is hard. really hard. very cold. >> reporter: the residents have been getting texts from pg&e about when the power will be turned back on. selena latu said it was supposed to be in the afternoon but her home remains in the dark. >> there is no warm water. and the stove is off. all the food in the fridge is not good. >> i don't care about the food and stuff because you know, we can just go get fast food. it is just the weather right now. it's cold. >> reporter: all the residents can do is hope the power comes back on soon. selena would love to see the lights back on as well. she works nights and hates leaving her family in the cold and the dark. >> i'm just like kind of really

worried about my kids when i left. there is no light around. >> reporter: the latu family says there is one good thing to come out of the power outage. for the most part, they put their phones down and they have been able to bond as a family. >> we reached out to pg&e multiple times. we called and emailed and tried everything we could to find out when the rest of the customers who are still in the dark will get their power back on. but pg&e so far has not responded to that request. the family of a two-year- old boy says it is a miracle that he survived after a giant tree crashed onto their home and pinned him to the ground. this happened in boulder creek up in the santa cruz mountains. a huge redwood tree fell down and pierced the roof. it went right through it. the power was out at the time and it took a few minutes for everyone to realize what had happened. >> i didn't realize the ceiling had collapsed.

i couldn't hear milo. and that is when it kind of really sunk in that we needed to find him. >> awful. little milo's heard her screami and they rushed over to dig through the debris to find milo. he was rushed to the hospital with broken legs, a broken pelvis, and cuts all over. but today, doctors told his parents that he will live. >> he is the luckiest unlucky kid in the entire world at this point. the chances of him to be struck by a tree like that, but to be in that particular position and the particular way it was. yeah. a miracle. >> milo is still in the hospital tonight. he has a long way foothill go until he is recovered but he is in stable condition and his parents are glad about that. people in the santa cruz mountains have been hunkering down amid the snow, the cold, and power outages there as well. that has become a big business opportunity for some locals like one general store in

redwood estates. >> what are people coming in for? ice? ice? for, you know, beer. groceries. and firewood, too. >> it happens a lot when there's, you know, powers lost for a while. there's been times when power has been out for a couple of weeks up here. and it happens frequently. so yeah. when that happens. up next, all this snow will make it a big treat for skiers once the storm clears but getting to tahoe is a different story. and the oakland police chief argued he should not be fire department and now he was. he is trying to get his

oakland's former police chief has said more than once he should not have been fired. now he is doing something about it. he is appealing his termination. he sent a letter to the city about it and this could be a first step before he files a lawsuit against the city. though he hasn't said yet if that is his plan definitively. he was fired for allegedly mishandling officer misconduct cases. and today, she defended her decision to fire him which has been met with a lot of controversy. she said it was her right as mayor and repeated she has lost faith in him to lead opd. >> it is just unfortunately i no longer have the confidence that he could continue to do what is needed to reform the police department and help us move from under the federal oversight. >> you can watch the full eight minute interview with mayor sheng thao on our website,

kpix.com. well tonight, cars along i- 80 pulled off to the side of the road. all west and eastbound lanes closed from colfax to the nevada state line because of bad visibility. yeah. not good. >> high winds as well. travelers have to wait it out. >> you knew that was going to happen. >> but i figured i would see how bad it was. if they were letting folks through. and they have the highway all blocked off. now we are sitting here hoping to open it back up. >> disappointment. regret that we didn't leave earlier. or i don't know. that might be a blessing, too. >> well still no time line on when the highway will reopen because of course they still have bad weather though. they are dealing with right now. >> and the snow will continue in the high sierra. more or less through the middle of next week. if you want to take advantage of the fresh powder, wait until next weekend because it will be a mess the next several days.

we have our own issue to worry about. we are still in first alert mode. wind and rain as we head through the rest of the overnight hours including the possibility of more thunderstorms. and accumulating snow between 1200 and 1500 feet. a bit lower than estimates. it is the higher elevations with the best chance of snow. you can stick the ruler in and see how much you got as opposed to one coating of flakes on lawns and rooftops. the next storm system will arrive on sunday. it will be a brief break in between. we have that wild weather across the bay area this evening including in san francisco. multiple cloud to ground lightning strikes and our own elizabeth cook tweeted out this video of hail in san francisco. she lives near the sunset and she tweeted it out saying is this snow? is this ice? is it sleet? what is it? technically, it's graupel. it is soft hail that falls out of thunderstorms when the freezing level within that storm is fairly close to ground

level. there is so much cold air associated with this system. it allows the graupel to not melt before it reaches ground level. here is the view on first alert doppler right now. and it is a mess across the entire bay area. when we put on wintertime mode, it lets us know where the snow is falling but tends to de- emphasize the tendency of the rain. we will zoom in from where that intense rain is falling and there are more cloud to ground lightning strikes just offshore of san francisco and northern san mateo county. this is going to be pushing into the city within about the next 20 to 30 minutes. more heavy downpours and lightning and rumbles of thunder and that small soft hail. this heavy rain will continue pushing across the bay as we head through the rest of tonight. the snow level has been dropping in the north bay. that is the pattern we have been seeing. this is about as low as the snow level will go for the north bay. however for the rest of the bay

area, the east bay hills, the diablo range, santa cruz mountains, the snow level will continue dropping all the way down to the 1200-foot level. more moisture offshore. but this should be pushing through as we get toward the peak of rush hour tomorrow morning. more of a break in the action. plan on a slow commute and treacherous travel conditions in the north bay mountains and the santa cruz mountains. highway 9, highway 17. highway 35. all those will be sloppy. and more off and on showers through the day tomorrow. a little break in the action developing before showers back up toward us as we head into tomorrow night and early saturday. that shower activity will not last too long. we should be catching a break. here is the winter storm warning for all elevations above 1500 feet. that could drop all the way down to about 1200 feet. the amounts are going to vary

wildly. on the rain snow dividing line. it will be the heavy wet snow. the higher you go, several inches of accumulation will occur especially further above 2,000 or 3,000 feet. it will add up to half an inch to an inch out of this system. some spots overachieving picking up closer to or more than an inch-and-a-half of total rainfall. and it is a winter storm warning in the high sierra with the winter weather advisory around lake tahoe. this warning goes through 4:00 a.m. saturday. they will need another one for the next storm system headed our way sunday. continuing into monday. and tuesday. snow levels around the bay area and that time frame look like they will be higher. temperatures stay above freezing and that is important when it come to the rain snow dividing line. highs are only going to be in the upper 40s to around 50 degrees but again, the showers should become fewer and further between as we head toward late morning and early afternoon. there is that next wave of rain headed our way. temperatures don't warm up a whole lot. but it is happening further up in the atmosphere that

tomorrow marks one year since russian forces invaded ukraine. juliette goodrich has the story of a ukrainian family that settled in the north bay. >> reporter: they are such a loving family but they have so much they have overcome. but they find joy in one spot in the north bay. it's a sport that ira has been playing since she was five years old. this is her new tennis coach here in the bay area. she and her family are from eastern ukraine. they had to flee here last march. she, her brother and mother came to the bay area but her father couldn't leave. men couldn't leave without permission from the government. here are photos when they were reunited months later when he could leave ukraine and come to

be with his family. once again. >> it is pretty challenging for us. the kids handle this better than adults. >> reporter: after ira and her mother and brother arrived march 5 of last year, the call went out on social media asking for suggestions for a tennis academy. days later, ira found a home at hrt in sausalito. >> she said let's watch her. how is she doing? >> amazing. she has been training hard. >> you made a family really transition here really special. but that must have meant something to you guys too, right? >> it really feels amazing. tennis unifies different cultures and to be able to make ira feel like home. >> reporter: home away from home. >> i like the school because it is really fun. and i love the teachers and my

friends, too. >> making lots of friends? >> yeah. >> and getting better and better at tennis? >> yeah. >> reporter: the war in ukraine is undoubtedly turned the shostakovich family upside down. they say it has been quite a year for them but they are grateful to be safe and supported. their hearts continue to ache as they watch the war destroy their hometown in ukraine. some of their family members refused to leave though there is no safe place in ukraine right now. they say they have family living in the suburbs which is a little bit safer. ira's brother tells us about it. >> my grandparents are there. my uncle is there. but they are safe. >> reporter: and despite the very windy day, she even took some time to teach me some tennis tricks. >> yeah. >> oh well. i'll keep practicing. >> reporter: a snapshot of a family reunited and able to keep smiling despite the year they have endured.
