we're not going to get much of a break. the system from today is done. the ones for tomorrow morning is more impressive. in fact, it's a first alert day for tomorrow morning's commute. we're going to explain why in one second. and outrage in the south bay after two food vendors were attacked on the job. how the site of one of those attacks became a place where the community could show their support. he was almost at tears. i stopped saying thank you over and over and over, and was very grateful. >> also how a historic oakland church is making a new start after a devastating fire. and later, his parents got married at chase center, so it is only fitting that he go to his first warriors game when he is just a baby. good evening, i'm andrea nakano. >> and i'm brian hackney. a storm is on the way for tomorrow. >> after a couple of days of freezing temperatures and snowy

weather, we are expecting a mix bag everything from lightning, hail, to wind. looking live, it's expected to be a very rainy commute tomorrow morning. first alert meteorologist darren peck is here. we are done with the snow. just some interesting weather ahead? >> yeah, we need to change our focus because tomorrow morning will be a lot more intense. occasional thunderstorms, brief downpours, gusty winds. so first of all that's the headline. tomorrow morning is a first alert day particularly from like 6:00 a.m. to noon. 20% chance for thunderstorms, but i think that paints the picture well enough. the national weather service has shaded the entire bay area and then some into orange. we were just telling you we have a moderate risk for thunderstorms in that window and the hazards that go along with this. lightning, gusty winds, small hail, and yes, even some localized street flooding if you happen to get one of the heavier cells over your part of the bay. it's not from today's system, that's history. so we've got to turn our

attention now to tomorrow morning. that's 6:30. by 6:30, we've already seen the leading edge of the next system get into the north bay. watch it work its way across the entire bay area by the time we get to late morning, 10:00 a.m., 11:00, it's coming right through the heart of the bay. this will be a particular impact for the first part of monday. it does impact the morning commute. even if it doesn't get down to the peninsula on the south bend until the afternoon. we're going to slow this down and watch it all again and go into this in more details coming up in the complete first alert forecast. but there's your early heads up. tomorrow morning will be different. i'll see you in a few minutes. back to you. >> all right, thank you. thousands of people here in the bay area are still without power after those storms last week. and pg&e is saying there could be more power cuts in the coming days. this is a look at power outages as they stand tonight. most of them concentrated in two areas in the north bay and in the santa cruz mountains. some of those folks have been without power since tuesday. new tonight, a san jose

community mobilizing to help two food vendors assaulted in two separate incidents caught on video. on february 16, the hot dog vendor was brutally attacked by a customer outside the sap center. two days later not far from the san jose airport, another food vendor was beaten with a baseball bat. betty yu met up with the victims who attended today's street vendor buyout. >> well today was a day that we brought the vendors here together for a community buyout to let them know they're not alone. >> reporter: people from near and far showed their love on sunday for two san jose street vendors who were attacked separately in two days. video shows kenny ho, the owner of auto parts, attacking carlos sanchez with a baseball bat. he even threatened him with a can of lighter fluid. he was arrested on charges of assault and attempted carjacking. saul said he was punched and kicked by a customer after he

demanded a free hot dog. this attacker has yet to be identified. >> we came out and personally donated a good amount to these vendors. what a blessing it was today. >> reporter: a street vendor activist from l.a. helped organize this community buyout at the same location carlos was recently attacked. >> since they don't have time off or any paid leave or days off. the importance of a community buyout is for them to take some time off if they want to. because they just went through something traumatic. >> reporter: saul seen on the left and carlos on the right were both at the buyout where hundreds showed up. >> carlos, he sold out in the first six minutes. people were already lined up since 12:00. so by 6:00 p.m., he had completely sold out. so they had to come in and bring them different batches. he was almost at tears. he just kept saying thank you over and over and over that he's very grateful. >> reporter: the owner of venue

yoga studio helped sponsor the buyout after seeing the news. she was inspired after seeing alex's work on instagram. >> we actually ended up donating more just because they kept on going. >> reporter: on sunday, they posted on their facebook page, a message that read in part, "i continue to be embarrassed and regretful about my actions. yesterday my family and i cleaned up the area for the event. we're opening up our parking lot, and we put up big signs saying everyone is welcome." beyond the legal protections of street vendors in california, alex hopes these kinds of buyouts help humanize street food vendors. >> they're not out here robbing, stealing, they're trying to make a living in a legit manner as much as possible as they can. they're just humbled hard working people. >> no matter what city you're from. no matter what kind of business you come from, it's like at the end of the day, you we can

all help each other. >> tonight there, are candles and messages of support outside the san francisco iheart radio office. it's a tribute to a popular radio host and dj that vanished on thursday, jeffrey vandergrift. he was last seen leaving his home on king street in san francisco at 10:00 on thursday night. police say he is considered at risk. they didn't elaborate as to why. he's 54 years old and about six feet tall. he co-founded the dog house show during the 1990s in 2000, which became the most popular bay area morning radio show. right now the east bay members of an oakland church gathered for a prayer vigil they started at 10:44 tonight. it's because it was at 10:44 last sunday night the fire broke out at the first african methodist episcopal church. >> to lead the people through

they will hold service here for a few more weeks as they plan the next step. >> the building has burned down, but the ministry doesn't stop. the church is not the building. the church is what's in your heart. >> reporter: flames gutted oakland's oldest black church on telegraph avenue last sunday night. senior pastor ronnie smith says it may take a couple of years to rebuild. >> f.a.m.e. is oakland. >> reporter: this is how f.a.m.e. looked like when i did a story back in october. beautiful and iconic inside and out. state rushed to the church when he heard about the fire. >> the shock of seeing three fire trucks pouring streams. it's unfathomable. >> reporter: he's been a member for about 20 years. >> you've taken our building, but not our souls. >> reporter: firefighters are still investigating the cause, but witnesses tell investigators they saw a homeless man start a fire next to the church to stay

♪[ music ] ♪ in oakland, the black joy parade celebrates the culture influence of black people. devin fehely shows us how the hyperpositive event reached beyond the bay area to bring people together.

>> reporter: marianna dorsey traveled to oakland's black joy parade. >> i'm just out here trying to connect with our people. >> reporter: she was drawn to its celebration of culture and community and its general positive message. >> in our area, we don't normally see this type of big celebration. so coming out here, it's like it's really big, it's live. you see all the different types of black people. different types of culture within the black community. >> reporter: this is the sixth annual black joy parade and celebration. it's meant as an outgrowth of black history month or the backdrop of the celebration may be the struggles and challenges of being black in this country. organizers were determined to let black music and dance and culture enjoy the stage. >> i'm just trying to be the best that i can be. i really don't look at the color. i'm trying to be a good human being and first of all being a christian. but i do want to support my people. >> reporter: in addition to the parade, there were food vendors and concerts and frankly who

couldn't find something they liked at a celebration of joy. >> we're trying to spread joy. we're trying to spread love. we want unity in our families. we want unity in all the di t diversities. >> reporter: for marianna and her cousin josiah, that message is infectious. >> this is a time for us to come together to be proud of who we are. be proud of our culture. >> as you can see, the fun didn't stop after the parade. there was a packed after party at an oakland club near the vox theater. now to switch gears, national weather service tonight is warning you not to drive out to the sierra if you don't have to. the agency is saying there is so much snow on the way it could be life threatening. the sierra will be under a blizzard warning in a few hours. they're expecting up to nine feet of snow by wednesday. people are being warned to stay

inside in the sierra. even a short walk in blizzard conditions could be dangerous. reporter shawn shawntee passmore found more. >> people should stay off the roads tomorrow because of a dangerous combination of snow and wind making driving nearly impossible. shawn >> i'm thinking we're probably going to turn it around. >> reporter: sunday night winds were already picking up. >> higher up the mountains where we are at. >> reporter: they're warning of the whiteout conditions, bringing extremely dangerous driving conditions. school districts have announced closures on monday. concerned just getting to class could be impossible.

>> we don't see that every day. >> reporter: january 2021 is when the sierra last received a blizzard warning. the difference between the different storm warning and blizzard warning. a blizzard means lower visibility, less than a quarter of a mile with winds clocking at least at 35 miles per hour. and a duration of at least three hours. despite the weather warnings, cal trans tells me it's already in snow operations through wednesday with 24/7 coverage. >> being prepared can be the difference between life or death. >> reporter: tomorrow morning is the start of these blizzard like conditions that could stay through the middle of the week. so when it rains here. >> it pours. >> it goes. >> so we're going to shift our attention from that side of the state right back here to home. our site of that storm will be impressive, which is why tomorrow is the first alert weather day. we're not so concerned about the snow here. there will be snow down to the higher peaks with this one, but this storm is bringing more

energy and more convection, more thunderstorms are going to come through in the morning tomorrow. so we've got our first alert designation for tomorrow. a 20% chance of thunderstorms. but if you look at the map in a different way, they put this within the last two hours or so. it highlights the entire bay area and then some north and south in a moderate category risk for thunderstorms in that time frame. that's from 6:00 a.m. until noon. that's the first stage of this. it will be the most impressive part of the rain, but it's not the only part of the forecast over the next few days. we will get rain out and a chance of rain until wednesday morning starting tomorrow. but it's the opening round that will be the most exciting and perhaps the most impactful with brief downpours, some wind, maybe some small hail. that's the exiting storm from today. that one wasn't really that impressive compared to what's coming our way. and fast forward now, we'll watch the next one come in. on the similar side in terms of

timing because it will come in to the north bay tomorrow morning here in the 8:00 hour and now we see our organized line. it's a stronger cold front than today was. as it comes down to the heart of the bay, you see embedded in the orange and yellow on here, some areas that are going to show up and a very fine line of red, which is the forecast models of visualizing, where some of the intense downpours are going to occur. where you're likely to get some lightning, thunder, small hail. and it did say on there some localized street flooding is possible. so this will be real localized where you get the downpours right in that line. it comes in and gets out. it doesn't linger, but it will be around long enough that the rainfall will accumulate. it's not a widespread flood concern tomorrow. it's not like the january storms, but it could be localized street flooding. look at what it does to mount hamilton. by the time it gets there, snow levels down around 2,500 feet with this. the ones on thursday and friday got down to 1,200 feet.

i'll show you the difference in one second and why that 1,200-foot chain makes all the difference in terms of impacts here. still relatively low for us. but thursday and friday was really low, and we're not doing that again with this storm, but more snow on hamilton and it will keep going. showers will keep falling on tuesday morning. another little wave of impulses is going to come through. tuesday is also a first alert weather day now. as we get into tuesday, another round of mixed thunderstorms as well. this system is intensifying as it gets closer. when we get to wednesday morning, it's done. there will be a few breaks without rain on it in the seven-day forecast. so rainfall totals from this system, anywhere from an inch to an inch and a quarter, but all bets are off if you happen to get those intense cells. parts of the bay area will probably get more than that in this time frame, and the bulk

will come from that window at 6:00 a.m. to noon tomorrow. if you watch the way the snow is going to fall, and we do get snow in higher peaks. if we change our perspective, you can see the difference elevation will make. the tops of the santa cruz mountains might get a dusting on this. so noteworthy on friday for getting shut down because of snow on it is at 1,800 feet. you'll get snow along the risch tops with another way to look at it. it includes the diablo range and the north bay mountains. perhaps as low as 3,000 feet. and to highlight what that looks like, there's your snow along the tops of the mountains from 3,000 feet and up, but it won't be as low as it was. it's going to be cold tomorrow morning. and we'll be in the mid-30s. daytime highs won't get warmer than that, maybe make it up to 50. and now in the seven day if you were with us earlier today for

monday or tuesday. tuesday doesn't look as impressive as tomorrow will be, but tuesday's got enough with isolated thunderstorms. want to start drawing your attention to that now. we will still have exciting weather on here on tuesday. wednesday, it's a morning shower. thursday and friday you get a break. because next weekend and a whole other storm will come our way. we will talk more about that as we get closer. for now back to you. >> thank you. the oakland zoo is taking note they're going to close tomorrow because of all the rain coming in tomorrow morning. this is video from the repair work after those january storms shut the zoo down for more than a month. and if you've got a reservation for tomorrow at the oakland zoo, they say you should get an automatic refund. as of now, by the way, glowfari is still on tomorrow night, but they will make a final decision by noon. and the yosemite national park expected to get so much snow it's shutting down until wednesday. they could get between 4.5
