americans are under the threat of severe weather as a powerful storm system makes its way across the central u.s. tornadoes and powerful winds caused extensive damage in oklahoma, texas, and kansas. meanwhile, the west coast already cleaning up after devastating winter storms faces the possibility of more extreme weather. jarred hill is here in new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. oklahoma might have broken a record for the most tornadoes to touch down in the month of february. as the sun prepares to come up, the cleanup can now begin. take a look. multiple tornadoes hit the southern plains including norman, oklahoma, where a twister flipped over vehicles and damaged homes. >> she waited for me to get her. >> reporter: affiliate kwtv spoke to this woman who described the frightening moments before he gathered her four kids together for cover. >> we heard two large thumps and the moment we heard that my

daughter covered her head, and the back window busted out. >> reporter: the system making its way east caused blindingly heavy rain and lightning in oklahoma and intense hail in texas. >> holy cow. >> reporter: this huge cloud was filmed in kansas. >> just fell over on top of the cars here. >> reporter: in california, the cleanup is under way after the same weather system brought strong winds that snapped trees and heavy rain that flooded the freeway and triggered rock slides. residents in this los angeles county neighborhood were evacuated after a mudslide damaged homes. >> that's my house. my cars. >> reporter: other communities in southern california, especially near the mountains, saw historic snowfall leading to a rare snow day. >> that was good! that was amazing! >> reporter: a weaker storm system still threatens to drop more rain and snow in california through the mid part of the week. another concern here is that the national weather service is warning about blowing dust that could reduce visibility up to

two miles around oklahoma city. now parts of the northeast are also bracing for winter storms as well as snow. back to you. >> thank you so much. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy is marking nine years since russia's occupation of crimea. yesterday he tweeted "this is our land," adding the ukrainian flag will return to every corner of the country. imtiaz tyab reports from kyiv. >> reporter: sheltering underground is the only way to survive in the eastern ukrainian town of vuhledar where despite it all there's still faith this war will end. for amelia, that faith remains unshakeable. even as she and her daughter risk their lives under relentless russian artillery strikes just to gather the basics. "my sister died nine days ago," she weeps, "we have nothing. i have to collect rain water just so we can wash our hands and clean our dishes."

this once well-to-do coal mining town has become one of the most bitterly contested front lines in vladimir putin's war on ukraine. a war now in its second year. in the ruins of vuhledar's devastated streets are ukrainian soldiers determined to deprive moscow of its desperate desire to control all of the industrial eastern donbas region. "what russia is doing now is a genocide of ukrainians," this soldier says, "we don't have any other option but to win." but the grinding warfare which have become symbols of ukrainian resistance makes life a misery for so many. this evangelical christian minister dressed in camouflage hugs one of vuhledar's last remaining residents. few others are brave enough to bring aid here, and all the minister can offer are loaves of bread. this 73-year-old says despite it all, she won't leave. "we are frightened, but what can we do," she says. "we live with it, we just can't say to the russians don't shoot."

now the front line between ukrainian and russian forces may largely be static, but it stretches for hundreds of miles, from the northwestern russian border all the way to the black sea. vuhledar is now one of the deadliest hot spots. >> that was imtiaz tyab reporting. russian president volodymyr -- vladimir puti of working to dissolve his country. in an interview yesterday, he also accused nato of taking part in the ukraine conflict by sending the country billions of dollars worth of weapons. cia director william burns said putin is overconfident in his ability to wear down ukraine. on "face the nation," burns added the u.s. is closely monitoring whether beijing will sending lethal equipment to russia. >> we also don't see that a final decision has been made yet, and we don't see evidence of actual shipments of lethal equipment. it would be a very risky and unwise bet. >> china officials over the

weekend refused to condemn russia's war with ukraine at a g20 economic meeting. russia was the other country that refused to sign the statement. at least 61 people were killed when a wooden boat carrying migrants to europe hit rocky reefs and broke apart off the coast of italy. the boat left turkey five days ago with people from afghanistan, pakistan, and other countries. the u.n. says as many as 200 migrants might have been on board. at least 80 have been found alive, but dozens are still missing. at home, the trial for disgraced lawyer alex murdaugh resumes this morning. it comes after intense cross-examination on friday when murdaugh took the stand and insisted he did not kill his wife and son. >> the person or people who did what i saw on june the 7th, they hated paul --

that contaminated soil and water would be sent there for disposal. it will now be sent to two approved sites in ohio. all the rail cars have been removed from the site except for 11 being held by the ntsb. >> excavate additional contaminated soil and begin installing monitoring wells. these are monitoring wells at the site of the derailment. they will tell us whether there's contamination to ground water. >> federal and state officials have said it's safe for evacuated residents to return to the area, but some people have complained of feeling sick after they went home. coming up, the origin of the covid pandemic. a u.s. agency now says the virus most likely came from they lab leak. and important news if you are on medicaid. why millions of people could lose their coverage. this is the "cbs morning news." ♪ [ speaking non-english ] it was raining stuffed animals at a soccer match in istanbul. spectators threw thousands of teddy bears and other stuffed toys onto the field yesterday. they will be donated to children who survived this month's deadly earthquake. the event was organized by the fans of one of the turkish teams. millions of americans could lose their medicaid coverage this year, and there's new intelligence about the origin of the covid pandemic. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "wall street journal" reports the covid pandemic most likely originated from a leak at a chinese lab. that's according to a new department of energy report. the department which oversees a network of u.s. labs reached the conclusion as a result of new intelligence. it made its judgment with,

quote, low confidence, according to people who have read the report. in 2021 the fbi also said the virus spread in a mishap at a chinese lab. other federal agencies, though, including the national intelligence council have concluded the virus came from natural transmission through an infected animal. "the new york times" says all five people on board a medical plane were killed when it crashed in nevada. the plane operated by care flight went down friday night in a mountainous area around 45 miles southeast of reno. the pilot, a flight nurse, paramedic, and a patient and patient's family member all died. the area was under a winter storm warning at the time. >> it sounded almost -- i told my wife that it sounded like a ship kind of like a ship sinking. the noise of it. and then we heard a big motor and a big boom.ne aply brokert before hitting the gr.

it's unclear what may have caused the crash, but the faa and the ntsb are investigating. and the "associated press" says millions of people who rely on medicaid may be booted off the program. when the pandemic started, the federal government prohibited states from kicking people off medicaid even if they were no longer eligible. over the next year, states will be required to start checking the eligibility of every person on medicaid. as many as 14 million people could lose access to medicaid health care coverage. still to come, new layoffs at twitter. the social media platform cuts hundreds of jobs in the latest round of layoffs since elon musk took over.
