for more, download the cbs news app on your cell phone or connected tv. i'm shanelle kaul, cbs news. new york. it's wednesday, march 1st, 2023. this is the "cbs morning news." breaking overnight, a deadly train crash in greece. at least 36 people killed, and dozens more hurt after the head-on collision. we're tracking the latest details. a new powerful storm slamming california. blizzard warnings are up in portions of the state. the storm also eyeing the midwest and northeast later this week. lori lightfoot out as chicago's mayor. the race now goes to a runoff in april. we'll tell you who's going head to head to lead the city next. well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a new winter storm is bringing blizzard conditions to parts of california.

we will have more on that in a moment. we want to start with some breaking news from overnight. at least 36 people were killed and at least 85 injured in a fiery train wreck north of athens, greece. a passenger train collided at high speed with an oncoming freight train before midnight. multiple cars derailed, and at least three burst into flames. rescuers were digging through mangled metal to search for people who may be trapped. about 350 passengers were on the train at the time, and many of those passengers were university students who were returning home from celebrating carnival over the long weekend. victims were taken to nearby hospitals. right now the cause of the crash is unclear. and an investigation is under way in florida to determine the cause of a train derailment there. several rail cars tipped over yesterday in an industrial area near the sarasota-bradenton airport. one was carrying about 30,000 gallons of propane. officials say there is no

evidence of leaks and no reports of injuries. to our other breaking story now. california is being hit with a new winter blast this morning. blizzard warnings are up in the state's sierra-nevada region. the storm will eventually spread coast to coast, dumping snow and ice into the midwest and the east later on this week. jarred hill is in new york. what's going on? >> reporter: you know, the national weather service is anticipating that this system could end up impacting almost all of the continental u.s. over the next couple of days. for now, as you mentioned, the snow keeps piling on in parts of california where we're learning the storm has turned deadly. winter weather tragedy in central california. this porch collapsed under the weight of heavy snow. an 80-year-old woman trapped later died. >> we just saw the activity and knew it wasn't good. >> reporter: sheriff's deputies in central california rode snowmobiles to check on residents. >> the storm the keep comig back to back to back.

>> reporter: volunteers also searched for people who may have been stuck in their cars. >> to count the number of people, impossible. just this week my group has helped hundreds of people. >> reporter: further south a state of emergency declared in san bernardino county after several feet of snow trapped residents and shut down roads in the mountains. police organized escorts for delivery trucks and folks to take critical supplies to those who might be running out of food, medicine, and other necessities. >> i have animals up there. my mom is up there alone. >> reporter: meanwhile, heavy rains and melting snow pack tri los angeles county like this one that shut down mulholland drive. across the country in the northeast, something different. families enjoying the snow day after a pretty mild winter. although the winter fun landed four university of connecticut students in the hospital. they collided while sliding down a hill. >> you're bound to hit someone if there's 100 kids out.

>> reporter: in new york, monday night's snow turned to tuesday's slush. the treacherous and slick road caused one car to spin out north of the city. a drop in temperature overnight is expected to further impact driving conditions. now the whole country isn't under a deep freeze right now. quite the opposite. while the coldest spot yesterday was negative 21 degrees at the tip of maine, the high was 98 in texas, and we could be seeing record heat in other parts of the country over the next couple of days. it's wild out there. >> it is. the tale of two extremes. thank you. to chicago now where mayor lori lightfoot lost her bid for a second term. the first black woman and openly gay person to lead the city failed to finish in the top two in yesterday's elections. none of the nine candidates received more than 50%, though, so that means former school ceo paul vallas and cook county commissioner brandon johnson

advance to the april 4th runoff election. the supreme court's conservative majority appears skeptical of president biden's student debt relief plan. the justices yesterday began hearing arguments over the proposal that's faced several legal hurdles. jan crawford reports. [ chants ] >> reporter: students came to make their voices heard. >> there's a lot of anxiety and fear. >> reporter: 25-year-old jenaya moore would see a third of her $70,000 student loan debt erased under president biden's forgiveness plan. >> i feel look my life is on the line. >> reporter: she's one of 43 million people eligible for some student loan debt relief. those making less than $125,000 a year could get $10,000 in debt forgiven. those with pell grants could get $20,000 erased. but that comes at a cost. nearly half a trillion dollars. critics say on an issue this big, congress has to sign off. missouri attorney general andrew bailey is one of the state

republican leaders urging the court to kill the program. >> as someone who paid for my school in blood, sweat, and tears, and service to my nation, that's an issue near and dear to my heart. i'm confident the court will reach the right decision. >> reporter: confidence bolstered during arguments as conservative justices seem skeptical that president biden could single-handedly forgive student debt for 95% of borrowers. >> i think most casual observers would say if you're going to give up that much amount of money, if you're going to affect the obligations of that many americans on a subject of great controversy they would think that's something for congress to act on. >> reporter: liberal justices said the law gave the administration power to act during national emergencies like covid. >> there's a -- 50 million students who are -- will benefit from this who today will struggle. >> reporter: but the republican

leaders fighting to stop the biden plan say all that debt cancelation will cost their states money. a decision in this case is expected by the end of june. jan crawford, cbs news, the supreme court. the new bipartisan house committee focused on countering china held its first hearing as tensions with the u.s. grow. the republican chairman called on lawmakers to act with a sense of urgency in dealing with chinese competition.edbout chinese threats including the recent spy balloon that traveled across the u.s. >> it has been reported western-made components were found in this balloon. that is on top of the recent hypersonic missile test which circled the globe and landed with precision. >> the foreign relations committee is also expected to move forward today with a bill allowing president biden to ban chinese-owned social media app tiktok over security concerns. in a statement, tiktok told cbs news it would be unfortunate if

the committee were to censor millions of americans. the prosecution and defense in the murder trial of disgraced former attorney alex murdaugh have rested. before both sides present closing arguments, the jury is heading to the crime scene where murdaugh's wife and youngest son were shot to death. nikki battiste reports. >> reporter: before resting their case, prosecutors called back several witnesses to rebut parts of alex murdaugh's defense. among them his former law partner. >> he was a theatrical type presence in the courtroom, and he could get very emotional during closing arguments in front of a jury. >> reporter: but the defense's cross-examination got heated. >> you angry at him for stealing your money? >> i have no feeling one way or the other. >> reporter: he was grilled about his motive and testifying against murdaugh who stole millions of dollars from the firm. >> you are not angry with alex murdaugh? >> i have had anger with him, extreme anger because of what he

did to my law firm -- you can't walk around with anger. you have to find a way to deal with it. >> reporter: the last witness, a crime scene expert, disputed the defense's theory that the shooter had to be a foot shorter than murdaugh who is 6'4". >> it could have been a 5'4", 6'4", or in my opinion a 7'4". >> reporter: the jury will s are committed d whh there are convictions for where no one is an eye or ear witness. and circumstantial evidence carries the day. >> reporter: the jury will visit the murdaugh estate where maggie and paul were murdered before closing arguments begin. a sale of the murdaugh property is expected to close next week for about $4 million. nikki battiste, cbs news, walterboro, south carolina. coming up, runway scare.

"the boston globe" says faa is investigating a close call at logan international airport. officials say the pilot was a jetblue flight preparing to land had to take evasive action to avoid colliding with a private plane taking off. the faa says the pilot of the lear jet did not listen to instructions to wait. the jetblue plane landed safely, though, a little while later. this is the latest in a string of close calls, though, around the nation. "forbes" says millions of people in dozens of states will lose their s.n.a.p. emergency relief benefits today. the end of the pandemic era supplemental assistance program means some households will see their monthly benefits cut from $250 to just $30. congress voted to stop the program in december, but 35 states, washington, d.c., and several u.s. territories kept issuing extra benefits because of inflation. >> what is really worrying me now is having to cut down on the food i might have to buy so i can have enough money to pay my
