in trying to bring an explosive device on a flight. police say mark muffley put it in his suitcase and checked his bag. tsa agents paged the suspect, but he didn't show up. that's when security cameras allegedly caught him leaving the airport. jeff pegues reports. >> reporter: investigators say this is mark muffley, caught at lehigh valley airport surveillance cameras monday pulling two black pieces of luggage and allegedly booked to fly on allegiant airlines flight 201 bound for orlando. according to court documents, muffley never got on that flight, but he did check one of the bags. a tsa screening found a circular compound approximately three inches in diameter hidden in the lining of the baggage with two fuses attached, plus a mixture of flash powder used in commercial-grade fireworks. authorities paged muffley over

the airport's public address system, but he left the airport and went home. a bag tag with his name on it helped investigators track him down and arrest him. >> for those baggage officers that screened that checked bag and certainly alarmed and during their conduct of their full, open bag search, it led to some other concerns which led to a series of protocols to be implemented. and those protocols seemed to have worked in this case to perfection. >> reporter: even though what was found was likely not a viable explosive, it was still a potential threat to the aircraft and its passengers. fbi agents believe that the black powder and flash powder in that luggage are susceptible to ignite from heat and friction. jeff pegues, cbs news, washington. there was also a scare on board a spirit airlines plane at a dallas-to-orlando, rather, flight, with 179 people on board was diverted to jacksonville

yesterday after a fire broke out in an overhead bin. officials say it was caused by a battery pack that ignited. spirit says crew members put out the fire after smoke filled the cabin. one person was taken to the hospital. severe weather is bearing down on the south. the region is bracing for large hail and even tornadoes. out west, the latest winter storm dumped several feet of snow in california. it trapped people in their homes, closed roads, and cut power to tens of thousands of people. jarred hill is here in new york with more on all of this messy weather. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. folks cannot catch a break right now with all this. you got 13 counties in california under a state of emergency. so much snow fell so quickly in some parts of the state people can barely see out the window of their house. now other parts of the country are getting ready for the same system to impact them in very different ways. in the sierra-nevada mountain region of california, back-to-back winter storms have

left snow piles as tall as buildings, prompting warnings of possible avalanches. >> avalanche danger is still real. people need to keep that in mind, look at the forecast carefully, understand where we're seeing it possible. >> reporter: the weight of the heavy snow in foresthill called a gym roof to collapse, also this porch killing a woman. xiliary power, gas for heat.saya that's been a blessing. >> reporter: further south in san bernardino county, the roof of this grocery store collapsed under heavy snow. local officials have declared a state of emergency. >> we know we have stranded residents. it is our number-one priority to get to those residents. plowing of the roads is continuing 24/7. >> reporter: in los angeles county heavy rain, hail, and wind toppled trees and triggered rock slides like this one in malibu. a massive sinkhole opened up in

ventura county swallowing up an entire suv. fire officials say nobody was inside at the time. a nearby high school is closed today as a result. snow also battered northern arizona, advertising a traffic pileup on interstate 40, and in parts of the upper midwest. millions in the southern u.s. are preparing for possible large hail and isolated tornadoes today. all of it part of that same storm system. so the national weather service predicts more winter storms for the northeast this weekend. meanwhile, yet another system is forecast to strike parts of california into the weekend and into early next week. >> you've got to be me kidding me. wow. jarred hill in new york. hc hea collision in greece has risen to at least 43. protests erupted in several cities after a train carrying o.

rescuers searce a station master at the train's last stop was arrested, and the country's transportation minister resigned. the train workers union announced a 24hour strike to protest what it called greece's chronic neglect of its rail system. many of the victims were students returning from a holiday weekend. >> we heard a big bang, says this survivor, turning over and over in the carriage. people screamed. window shattered. we want all those responsible to pay for this mess, he said, this greek mess. trains derailing in 2023, it's insane. >> greece's prime minister called the accident a tragic human error and vowed that it would never happen again. prosecutors delivered their closing arguments in the double murder trial of alex murdaugh. they said the once-prominent lawyer was so desperate to hide his financial crimes killing his wife and youngest son was the

only way out. nikki battiste reports. >> reporter: with a fiery tone, lead prosecutor creighton waters gave his closing argument in a packed courtroom. >> the defendant is the person on which a storm was descending, and the defendant is a person where his own storm would actually mean consequences for maggie and paul. >> reporter: according to the prosecutor, that storm was murdaugh's lies and opioid addiction and stealing millions of dollars about to be revealed. >> and after an exhaustive investigation, there is only one person who had the motive, who had the means, who had the opportunity, to commit these crimes. >> reporter: prosecutors say murdaugh murdered his wife maggie and 22-year-old son, paul, in june, 2021, to distract from his financial crimes. >> she was running to her baby when she got mowed down by the only person that we have

conclusive proof was at that scene just minutes before. >> reporter: the prosecution's case has relied on circumstantial evidence. investigators never found the murder weapons or bloody clothes, and there were no eyewitnesses. >> we couldn't bring you any eyewitnesses because they were murdered. >> reporter: jurors went to the murdaugh estate. they spent about an hour viewing the house and dog kennels where the bodies were found. the defense will begin their closing arguments, then the prosecution has an opportunity for a rebuttal before the jury begins its deliberations. if convicted, alex murdaugh faces 30 years to life in prison. nikki battiste, cbs news, walterboro, south carolina. one of the top prospects in next month's nfl draft is facing criminal charges in connection with a deadly crash. former georgia star jalen carter was charged with reckless

astronauts, a russian cosmonaut, and an astronaut from the united arab emirates will replace a crew that's been in space since october. lawmakers propose a new rail safety bill, and new findings on the cause of a mysterious illness. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the washington post" reports havana syndrome was not caused by an energy weapon or foreign adversary, that's according to a u.s. intelligence report. about 1,500 american government workers and military personnel have reported cases in 96 countries. symptoms include ringing in the ears, headaches, and pressure in the head. intelligence officials say most of the cases investigated appear to have different causes from environmental factors to undiagnosed illnesses. lawyers for people who experience symptoms said the report was incomplete and lacked transparency. "the new york times" says a bipartisan group of senators proposed a rail safety bill.

yesterday ohio governor mike dewine toured the site of last month's train derailment in east palestine. the bill would tighten safety rules on freight rail carriers, strengthen inspections for trains carrying hazardous chemicals, and increase fines for safety violations. evacuated residents have complained of feeling sick since returning home. >> we've been working very hard to do is share with the community the facts and share with them the best information we have both about what we know and what we have yet to learn. we are working very hard to be transparent with them. >> this week house democrats introduced a separate rail safety bill. and "reuters" says the house foreign affairs committee approved a bill giving president biden the power to ban tiktok. there have been fears that user data from ktok parent company could end up in the hands of the chinese government. the measure would also allow the biden administration to ban
