from cbs news bay area, this is the evening edition. a boy scout community shaken tonight after a hike turned deadly. >> it is hard to imagine what happened. no way in or out, roads closed and snow blocking homes. leaving rescuers busy. a switch has been flipped, turning the lights out on the bay bridge. good evening. >> we start where a mom was taking her son and a boy scout troop on a hike where she was hit by a falling tree. >> betty has the story on how

this tragedy developed. >> reporter: friends and family of the victim are too distraught to speak to the media. hikers who frequent the park say they are stunned and saddened by this accidental death. david laced up his hiking boots as he normally does. he read about the hiker getting crushed before coming out. >> i was surprised. usually the path is well-kept. >> reporter: authorities say the ground was saturated and muddy saturday morning. it had been raining off and on. the victim was hiking with her son and a handful of boy scouts and their parents. they were 3 1/2 miles into the park when the tree fell at 10 am. >> i am not saying there is no

danger, there is definitely danger but i have been hiking here for years. i would have never thought something like that would happen. >> reporter: loved ones came to the parking lot to support the victim's husband. the boy scouts released a statement saying they are saddened. all scouts are safe and there are no additional injuries. emergency response protocols and notifications are currently being followed. he is the father of a boy scout, he was 40-50 feet away when he ran to help. >> we were trying to think on our toes and seeing if we could left bu

they part of another troop that also went for a hike. >> it is sad, we could have gone on that trail. it is very unfortunate. we all started together in the morning. >> reporter: authorities have not released the victim's name but a neighbor told kpix 5 that the family lives in san jose. >> darren was talking about the fact that the combination of the distressed trees and the rain we have gotten lately contributed and there is more rain on the way. >> we have three more days of this storm so we will talk about that first. in the long-range forecast we

will talk about friday. there could be a significant storm for us. a very different kind of storm coming our way. more on that later. for right now you can see scattered showers they areawide. as we put in futurecast, here comes another organized line overnight. do not be surprised if you get another rumble of thunder. last night was the cold front. we are not doing that again. these will have the potential to develop into a isolated downpour and small hail. this will go through wednesday. we will look at that in its entirety as well. before i say goodbye, here is a update within the last hour, the national weather service issued a winter weather advisory until tomorrow morning, as low as 1500 feet where we could see snow accumulating. that becomes important for tomorrow morning's drive. the possibility is there for light snow to get as low as some of the higher roadways around the hills.

the poster child for this highway 17. it will not be as bad as it was two weeks ago but it is possible tomorrow morning we could see a light dusting of snow. if you know anybody that takes that drive in the morning shoot them a text or gives them a heads up. i will be back with the rest of the forecast in a bit and we will look ahead to that friday rainmaker. southern california is still reeling from the rare snowstorm. yesterday 150 people had to be rescued from the mountains. crews are looking for people that need help. one woman that lives in lake arrowhead has not been able to get back to her mother since leaving for work on friday. >> she was alone during the winter storm and she was trapped. i had to go get her out when i got off of work. last week i had to dig out the

snow. she was scared. now she is stuck again over there. dozens of roads be remain closed including highway 18. meanwhile in the tahoe area, 60 miles of interstate 80 are closed all the way to the nevada state line. as nearby residents dig out from under feet of snow. >> almost 9000 people without power in the sierra, some are going a entire week without power. the snow toppled trees and collapsed structures all over the counties. they urge residents to clear the snow as they wait for the next storm. the snow caused trouble for more than just humans. it brought a unusual sight to the lake tahoe area.

a pelican was making a early trip to the breeding ground when witnesses say it hit eight powerline. after being treated, veterinarians say the bird is ready to be released. >> trees crashed into two homes in san jose. on market street it took down power lines and a couple of blocks away another tree fell into that complex. the power is back on for that neighborhood. trouble for drivers, a big oak tree fell across both lanes of traffic. it took cruise an hour to get the road back open. stay with cbs news bay area on air and online for the latest storm coverage throughout this unsettled week. three police officers will be in montgomery high school tomorrow. they will be there to help students feel safe after last week's deadly stabbing.

the police chief says he hand- picked the officers, he adds police have been called to the high school 97 times in the last year. two students were stabbed during a fight in a art class. one of them died at the hospital. santa rosa city schools will be holding a listening session with police this tuesday at the freeman event center. a martial arts instructor is in jail tonight after police say he admitted to molesting one of his students. 35-year-old joshua was employed by the city to teach martial arts. the victim's mother reported the incident friday after it allegedly occurred on wednesday. police are worried there may be more victims. police are looking for suspects that broke into half a dozen of cars in a parking lot. this is video just before noon yesterday of some of the victims fighting back. the thieves got away with some purses and luckily nobody was

it still looks like it is lit up. for now it is art and that dark for the bay bridge. >> the lights went dark tonight after 10 years. they were failing at a rate faster than they could be repaired but there is still the possibility of a comeback.

the nonprofit organization in charge is seeking 11 million in donations in order to bring the lights back better than ever. >> now we feel sad because we do not see the lights. >> when it went out the bridge still looks cool so less sad. >> so far the crowdfunding campaign to bring the lights back has raised over 16,000 and we are glad she was not as sad as she thought she was going to be. >> it has been 10 years so we forgot. it was not that sad before. >> it was not completely dark. >> a couple of updates on tomorrow morning i want to repeat. highway 17 tomorrow morning could get a dusting of snow. we will talk about that first. then we will try to get to the bigger story of what could be a more impactful storm coming on friday in terms of the amount of rain. let's go in order, the first alert doppler shows a with not

a lot. the pickup a number and get more intense in the overnight and these are the systems that will help lower the snow levels. if you get a little bit of convection in the storms they are pulling colder air down and that can lower the snow level. some of these will be able to drop the snow. that is 7 am tomorrow. that is a organized line, it has mixed in and goes through the southern edge of the diablo range. it is a touchy forecast but with the summit on 17 at 1800 feet, that is high enough. it will not be anything like it was two weeks ago but it can be impactful on the morning drive. other than that we still see scattered showers going into wednesday. this will also pick up again tuesday night. kind of like the grand finale on tuesday night, another

organized line that comes through, it will give us more low elevation snow, maybe down to 2000 feet and a occasional thunderstorm but by wednesday we are done. that is good, we want a break on thursday to get ready for what is potentially coming on friday. that is what the winter weather advisory looks like. we looked at this on top of the newscast, the one area to be concerned about is down here through the santa cruz mountains. thursday is a day off and then the pattern ships. the streamline zone is showing you how the atmosphere has been coming into california straight from the north. the storms have been called, they have not been big rainmakers. over the next four days the storm tracker over the pacific will reorganize and by the time we get to friday now we

see the systems coming from a different direction. the streamlines are coming back at us from the southwest. if we look at what they are pulling up, by friday, that is a concentrated plume of high amounts of water vapor to work with. these are the storms that give big rainfall amounts. now it is weak to moderate strength. it could be more impactful than that considering how much snow is in the sierra now. this is the other high-powered forecast model that goes long- range, it is a subtle difference but it shows the direction of the plume going further south. if we look at the forecast to friday, you see a pattern where there is a deep shade of green showing you high rainfall amounts, higher than

what we have seen over the last weekend half. we could see as much as a inch and a half of rain friday and saturday. the snow levels will be fairly high with that one. we could see rain on snow up to 5000 feet. it is early but it is a important detail in the forecast to start talking about. the confidence is growing through here. this will be a impactful system. it does not look like a significant flooding concern in the bay but should you get a widespread heavy rain event in the sierra from 2000-4000 feet, that does open up a degree of vulnerability to flooding because now you are getting a lot of rain and it is enough to melt a lot of snow at that elevation. it should not be a risk to hire elevation snow packs but for the lower ones it could. it could be enough rain for minor localized street
