i'm anne-marie green. in a possible preview of the 2024 presidential campaign, president biden, former president trump, and another possible republican candidate talked about their priorities in speeches across the country. mr. biden was in alabama where he commemorated the anniversary of bloody sunday with a call for stronger voting rights protections. meanwhile, trump was the main speaker at an annual conservative conference outside of washington. jarred hill is in new york with all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. we have 610 days until the 2024 presidential election. but who's counting? if anybody is counting, we are seeing candidates and possible candidates testing strategy and talking points. one republican would-be contender says he's officially out. ♪ president biden and others marched across the edmund pettus bridge in selma, alabama. it marks the 58th anniversary of bloody sunday. a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement when police beat peaceful protesters who were

demanding the right to vote. >> the right to vote, to have your vote counted is the threshold of democracy and liberty. this fundamental right remains under assault. >> reporter: across the country in california, florida governor ron desantis seen as a possible 2024 republican presidential contender slammed what he called woke idealogy before a crowd of supporters ae y. , surnd to the woke mob. our state is where woke goes to die. [ applause ] >> reporter: desantis skipped the conservative political action conference or cpac where former president trump gave a fiery speech saturday taking aim at president biden. >> we will evict joe biden from the white house. the nation" that he will not jump into the race. >> a smaller field, maybe tougher for trump to get the nomination. >> i didn't want to have a pileup of a bunch of people fighting. >> reporter: on the democrat side, author marianne williamson launched a long shot effort to challenge president biden for the nomination, although mr. biden has not officially announced a bid for re-election. so just 37% of democrats nationwide actually want president biden to seek a second term, according to a recent poll by the "associated press." on the gop side, trump overwhelmingly won the cpac straw poll last weekend with 62% support followed by ron desantis who only got 20%. back to you. >> interesting. jarred hill in new york. thank you. breaking overnight, the fbi says four u.s. citizens were kidnapped after gunmen opened fire on their vehicle in northern mexico. officials say that they were in a white minivan with north carolina plates when they entered the mexican city of

matamoros from brownsville, texas, on friday. the fbi says that they were placed in a vehicle and taken away. the agency is offering a $50,000 reward for their return and the arrest of those responsible. more winter storm warnings are in effect for parts of an already battered california with the heaviest snowfall in the sierra-nevada. it is the latest in a series of storms to hit the state. as much as ten feet of snow fell just last week. the storm shut down roads in the lake tahoe area near the nevada border. rescue crews tried to get people trapped for days in their homes the southern u.s., at least 12 people were killed when a powerful storm brought tornadoes 70 miles per hour, knocking down trees and power lines. more than 100,000 people are still without power there. >> i understand that this is the third most significant weather

event in the last 20 years for kentucky utilities. >> kentucky's governor warned it would take days to fully restore the power. federal investigators are expected to be on site today of another norfolk southern train derailment in ohio. saturday's derailment took place one month after a norfolk southern train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed. shanelle kaul has more. >> reporter: this is the moment 20 cars peeled off the track near springfield, ohio. residents nearby were asked to briefly shelter in place. local officials saying there is no public risk. >> the ohio epa made a determination that it was safe. so there is no hazards. both ground water, air, nothing like that. >> reporter: saturday's accident follows a string of recent et . one month later, residents say they are still physically

suffering even though the epa's testing shows the air and water are safe. it is the latest dramatic incident on the tracks that has authorities and the public concerned. >> it feels like we're talking more about train derailments recently. are we seeing a spike in incidents? >> we are not. if you go back for the last five or six years, you'll see we're at a constant rate. >> reporter: and according to federal data, rail remains the safest way to move hazardous materials. but after the east palestine disaster, ohio senator sherrod brown would like to see rail safety standards improve. >> it's clear that their greed and incompetence takes precedent over making their workers safe and making communities safe that they go through. >> reporter: last week brown and a bipartisan group of senators proposed new safety legislation for trains carrying hazardous materials.

state and federal officials say cleanup in east palestine, ohio, should take roughly two months as crews work to remove all the contaminated soil and then relay the tracks. we'll also learn more about exactly what may have went wrong in east palestine later on this week when the ceo of norfolk southern testifies in front of a senate committee. shanelle kaul, cbs news, new york. a greek station master accused of causing a deadly wi mtiple unts o was charged negligent homicide and other crimes. the 59-year-old man allegedly directed a passenger train carrying 350 people and a freight train onto the same track last week. at least 57 people were killed. the man spent more than seven hours testifying yesterday about what happened. [ shots ] clashes erupted yesterday in athens between police and demonstrators calling for rail safety measures in greece.

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." cbs new york reports a lithium ion battery sparked a fast-moving fire that injured at least seven people in the bronx. officials say yesterday's fire was caused by a battery that powered a scooter. it started in the back of a supermarket before spreading to other stores and then destroying an apartment building. more than 200 firefighters responded. >> there was fire everywhere. the smoke looked like it was going to take over the whole bronx. we couldn't even breathe. >> we were unable to get ahead of it. it had spread to the void spaces of the building and took off from there. >> five firefighters, an ems worker and electric utility worker were hurt. they're expected to be okay. an investigaon is under way to "the washington post" says more than 190 nations at the u.n. agreed to a landmark deal body to help protect

josh hawley, today seeks a stock trading ban for executive branch officials. the bill would require senior executive branch officials defined as career and political officials above a certain pay grade to divest their and their spouse's stocks or place them in a blind trust within six months of starting their job. he introduced a similar bill a year ago that did not move forward. tesla is recalling 4,000 model y vehicles because bolts securing the second row seat back frames may not have been securely tightened. the national highway traffic oo system performance, increasing injury risks during a crash. tesla says it's not aware of any injuries or deaths related to the issue. amazon go is stopping after less than a year. the company's closing eight of its cashierless amazon go stores. they're in new york, seattle, and san francisco. the company will still operate about 20 of the convenience stores across the country.
